Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 7 Week 10: Celts vs Koreans

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 09:10 AM PST

Hooray Siege Onager civs - now featuring DE balance changes!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Incas vs Turks, and next up is the Celts vs Koreans!

Celts: Infantry and Siegety FE for including this civilization

    • Infantry move +15% faster
    • Lumberjacks work +15% faster
    • Siege Weapons fire +20% faster
    • Convert sheep so long as it's within Celt player's LoS
    • TEAM BONUS: Siege Workshops work +20% faster
    • Unique Unit: Woad Raider (Fast moving, pajama-clad infantry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Stronghold (Towers and Castles fire +20% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Furor Celtica (Siege Workshop units +40% hp)

Koreans: Defensiveagain ty FE and Naval civilization

    • Villagers +3 LoS
    • Stone miners work +20% faster
    • Tower upgrades free (BBT requires Chemistry)
    • Towers +1/+2 range in Castle/Imperial Age
    • (NEW!) Military units (except siege) cost -15% wood
    • TEAM BONUS: Mangonel minimum range reduced
    • Unique Unit: War Wagon (Expensive, heavy, powerful cav archer)
    • Unique Unit: Turtle Ship (Expensive, ironclad, slow, powerful short-range cannon ship)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Panokseon (Turtle Ships move +15 faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Shinkichon (Mangonels +1 range)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • So Koreans used to be the butt of 1v1 Arabia jokes, whereas Celts have always been a solid pick. Does this match up change now that Koreans have cheaper wood-costing military units? Celts still possess a stronger start and better eco, but Koreans have a deadly arsenal of ranged military options that Celts may struggle to answer.
    • On water maps, Celts have the faster lumberjacks to give them a strong start, but they seriously fizzle out in the later parts of the game. Koreans used to have not much going for them early on, but now with the wood discount, will this be enough to hold off Celts until they can get their Turtle Ships out?
    • On closed maps like Black Forest, these two civilizations are both unquestionably top-tier, but fill the same role in a team composition (i.e. Halbs + SO). When choosing between the two, would you rather take the Celts with their much better Halbs, tankier and fast firing SO, and solid boom; or, would you rather take Koreans with their long-range SO, deadly War Wagons, and access to gunpowder units and BBT?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Indians vs Saracens. Hope to see you there! :)

What would you like to see in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition that's currently missing? - Megathread

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:37 AM PST

A lot of people are requesting a sticky thread to post suggestions in, where perhaps Forgotten Empires can pick a few good ideas from.

It can be left up as a sticky. (Mods please)

Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition — Update 33059 available

Everyone keeps joking about it, but this is just insane. I get a benchmark score of 939 with nothing else running on my PC.

    The new DE campaigns.

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 05:04 AM PST

What are your general thoughts on them? Are they well made? Do you find them fun and engaging? I just wanna see the consensus on the new campaigns since I started the ivaylo campaign and I gotta say, they really did a good job imo.

Also props to the team for going back and fixing a bunch of the older campaigns.

The first 5 seconds of a game is slow (+bonus Feudal question)

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 02:00 AM PST

Something to do with loading the assets up, I guess, but is anyone else having the first 5 seconds of the game be really slow loading?

It's quite frustrating as, as a competitive game, you want to get your build order off ASAP.

I found it's pretty much the same between Ultra and Medium so curious as to how to resolve it.

Bonus question: As soon as I hit Feudal Age, should I be getting the wood research ASAP and should I research the farm upgrade before beginning farming? For the latter I can usually time everything well enough to begin farms after the upgrade as it's just when I finish all the natural food resource. I assume also I should prioritise villagers over wheelbarrow.

    Just got AoE2 DE

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 06:24 AM PST

After watching various youtubers for months especially TheViper, Daut, Membtv, T90 and others. I decided to jump into the game and oh boy the feeling is different despite I know in theory what pros do such as the constant creation of villagers, hotkeys, build orders, building more TCs at castle age and stuff depending of the civilization which I find this a bit overwhelming.

Any advices on how to get started with the game before I ever jump into multiplayer? Art of war is sure an interesting mode as I could use some skills learned from pro games from hunting boars and try not to get housed to others despite its hard to actually do it compare to just watching which is why I need to find ways to improve my speed on this as right now I'm slower than Lord Daut.

There are over 30K people watching AoE2 DE on Twitch right now

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 02:38 PM PST

Just thought that was pretty crazy. Includes pretty big streamers like LIRIK and Giant Waffle. The highest I've seen watching AoE2 is around 5k. DE is POPPIN OFF.

Edit- omg 11 LIRIK is such a noob he built two houses against his tc and started chopping wood i love it

The game is crashing or hanging during the start of single player missions, help!

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 04:29 AM PST

    Specs:

    CPU: intel i5 6500 (4 cores, 3.20ghz)

    Ram: RipJaw DDR4 8gb (2x4)

    GPU: GTX 1060 SC

Shouldn't these be fine for a game like AOE? Why is my game crashing or near crashing when starting a mission? Also low fps overall to be honest.

When am I ready to start ranked?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 01:55 AM PST

    Hi people,

I am new to the game, I bought DE the day it came out and my previous experience with AOE goes back to maybe 12 years ago. I am currently spamming games vs hard AI in 1 vs 1 on random map with random civ, I could only beat it once so far. How does the hard AI compares to the regular ranked players? Sometimes it feels like it would probably be easier to play against a human than against this hard AI, that never feels overwhelmed and is kinda never doing any mistake...But I heard that the level in general is pretty high, hence I am probably not ready yet.

    Any thoughts and recommendations?

    Thanks

Question: Should AoE2DE and AoE2 be the same game in twitch?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2019 04:06 PM PST

For a long time AoC and AoEHD were separate games according to twitch, until they were merged into AoE2 maybe a year ago. Why are we doing the same thing again with AoE2 and AoE2DE?

Has anyone beaten the Alaric campaign?

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 12:18 AM PST

I'm playing on Moderate and am currently stuck on the 5th mission. I honestly have no idea how I am supposed to win.

I've identified Sarus (Purple) as the problem. The other AI are relatively passive, but he is riduculously aggressive and will start snowballing if you don't kill him early. The objectives indicate that if you kill him (Hero Unit - Sarus), he should be defeated. The issue is that I have no idea how to kill him.

I tried building up until I was strong enough to fight him, but by that point he's reached the snowball phase. He attacks relentlessly and combined with the other AI occasionally attacking, it's pretty much impossible to leave your base. You get starved of gold and eventually just get overwhelmed. He's also hard to attack first because Narbo (red) guards the main path towards his base with a horde of his Arbalesters.

I've tried to assassinate him at the start, but he doesn't leave the protection of the castle. You don't have enough units to kill him right away without them dying to the castle first, but if you spend time building more units, by that point he's already pumping out champions and halberdiers.

Has anyone actually completed this mission? Because I'm completely stumped at the moment.

New DE AI vs Barbarian AI (hard)

    Posted: 21 Nov 2019 07:43 AM PST

Which do you think is better? The new extreme DE AI or non cheating Barbarian (hard difficulty).

What'd you say the approximate rating would be for both?
