[Suggestion] Trade buildings should have an option to allow or prevent trade with that building so players can optimize trade routes.

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 09:26 PM PST

Trade in DE was changed so that carts/cogs now head to the market/dock that is furthest away, which is a great improvement. However, there is a concern that when using trade cogs, you might inadvertently build a forward dock that suddenly becomes the trade building of choice for your units, causing your cogs to sail into enemy waters.

To prevent this, and to give players better control over their trade routes, all trade buildings should have a button or something that will prevent units from attempting to conduct trade with that building. This button should be ticked by default so that you don't upset current trade routes when building new buildings.

An advice to new players: Remember that AoE is also a war game not just an Eco-Simulator/Citybuilder

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 12:00 AM PST

Last time I relearned AoE2 with friends we all started to learn the Build orders and how to lure the boar and stuff. How to reach the timers for Knight rush and what not. All the basic stuff.

The problem is that new players vastly overestimate the importance of early eco push.

Everyone knows that investment into eco scales incredible well. Having 5 more vils than the enemy is in the early game a huge eco lead.

HOWEVER, you are defenseless if you invest nothing into military.

What I saw pretty much every new player do wrong is to push eco by so much to reach early castle age and boom to get the strongest eco to scale military out of that, but by doing so, they completely forget about their military.

I encountered it alot that when i attacked frieds at 14 minutes with 3 man at arms and 2 archers, that I could completely demolish their woodline or cut them off of gold. they couldnt counter because they havent build a barracks, stables, or archer range yet. have no blacksmith with 0 military upgrades and no defensive towers. And I always got flamed for "tryharding" and attacking "way to early".

We agreed to a rule that I will not attack until I ask first so we could keep the fun while playing together. And it always ended in games where we only started to siege when people already had paladins and 3 defensive castles.

Please remember that the "war" part of the game starts at minute 7 or earlier. Not at minute 25 or later. You have to read the map correctly and must know if you could expect an attack or not (flank vs center/core. Walls/islands or open, unwallable map). And you always need a backup plan to defend your base.

And often "attack is the strongest defense":

even if you go for a knigh rush, it might not hurt to build a stable first and make 3-4 scouts to invade enemies woodline. Or camp their base with a couple of archers.

Its not wasted resources if you do damage to the enemies eco. Especially since they always have to answer with their own troops, which means they will be slowed down themself.

You might not reach the timers you could possible do by doing early skirmishes, but neither does your enemy.

Totally new to AOE2 and just got DE

    Posted: 17 Nov 2019 04:01 PM PST

I used to casually play AOE Castle Siege on my tablet, so I downloaded the new AOE2 DE version, thinking it would be the same basic game. Nope! It is vastly more complex, and I am already addicted. At 48, I should have discovered this game long ago, but somehow we never crossed paths. Anyway, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've watched some tutorials that were very helpful, but there are some questions that internet sources have not answered, so I'm hoping the more experienced people here can help.

First, I played my first game on easy against AI and completely annihilated the opponent (to be expected). I'm just not sure how or why some things happened. I kept creating villagers and military personnel, but somehow I ended up with 3 hunters. They were very helpful, but I have no idea where they came from. Any ideas?

A way to track progress of completed Historical Battles in DE?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 06:32 AM PST

So I just completed my first Historical Battle in AOE2 Definitive Edition. There's no indication that I've completed it whatsoever. At least for the campaigns, although there is also no indicator, you can basically keep unlocking the next mission until you reach the achievement for that specific campaign. There's only one achievement for completing all the Historical Battles, so this method will not work. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm about to take a screenshot of all the battles and use paint to cross them out as I complete them lol

Read THIS if Ao2DE is constantly crashing for you...

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 07:30 AM PST

So I had this issue when after launching campaign the game would just crash to desktop every time. When I tried to play skirmish, it would crash after about 10-15 minutes. The issue is memory leak. So, if you are having the same problem, increase your virtual memory to about 20 Gb. It's pretty simple to do, just follow this walkthrough: https://www.x-plane.com/kb/increasing-virtual-memory-on-windows/ and restart your PC afterwards. Just to be safe, your Internet browser should be closed when you are playing DE so you ensure enough memory is allocated to the game.

    Bagains

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 05:38 AM PST

How does Bagains (unique Bulgarian Imp tech) compare to other infantry technologies/bonuses?

Bagains costs 900F, 450G and gives infantry +3 melee armor.

The Burmese get +1 attack for free with every age (starting in the Feudal age) for a total of +3.

The Aztecs get +4 attack for 450F, 900G.

The Japanese attack 25% faster (starting in the feudal age).

The Vikings have +10%/+15%/+20% HP in the Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age.

After looking at these bonuses/technologies of different civilisations, I start to wonder how this technology is more competitive compared to the other ones. Also because the Bulgarians are missing the Champion upgrade.

    What do you guys think?

Mongols need to use the Castle's visual of Cumans and Tatars, not the one from japanese

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 06:22 AM PST

It's seems to be a fair improvement to the cultural visuals of mongols, the japanese/asiatic cultural buildings are really weird for them, there are closer to Cumans

Do much people play custom games?

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 04:22 AM PST

I remember back during the original AOE2 days, I played and made a lot of custom games, such as RPG games, Blood type games, moba type games all made in the editor.

I used to also make Campaigns and scenarios with a lot of triggers that got fairly popular during the Zone days in Microsoft.

With AOE2:DE I had a look at the editor and brought me back when I used to make the games, and I wanted to make a rpg style game out of it, but was wondering if there was a big scene for this type of stuff, and where would you advertise it.

I'm in the middle of creating a Archer Blood style game first, but I noticed the multiplayer lobby is a bit broken(only showing 4 matches)

I'm curious as to if the three kings featured on this picture are representing some prominent figures from the campaign. Can someone please answer?( In my opinion the man on the extreme left looks like an Aztec ->implying he might be Montezuma)

How to use custom maps? (KOTD, ECL, HC, etc)

    Posted: 18 Nov 2019 07:04 AM PST

I downloaded a mod that contains the major maps from Age 2 Definitive Edition KOTD, ECL, and HC tournaments. However, by selecting "Custom Maps", I could not access them. Is there another way?
