    80K subs! What a time for AoE2!

Let's get serious for a moment, if I right-click right now, what should be selected by the game?

Devs Please fix Elephant Archers once and for all.

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 08:32 PM PDT

Ive read many many posts on this major issue since many years, and decided to finally speak up.

I cant beleive the devs havent fixed this massively unusable UU already. It has basically remained untweaked since african kingdoms.

It pains me to see such a forgotten unit that is still passed as a UU, no civilization deserves this.

Hence I propose EA should get BOTH these changes with no changes to their current stats/price:

DONT FUSS ABOUT THE EXACT DETAILS HERE we just need to MAKE some BIG change HAPPEN to EA in next patch! (Not just +1 range, more fire rate etc, the unit must HAVE A real PURPOSE)

    1. Two archers on the back instead of one (like the african hero in the editor), only one fires commanded unit and other auto-targets closest unit. Because EA does less damage than a SINGLE crossbow and costs 2.6 TIMES (not incl upgrade/castle cost and time)

    2. Can garrison 2(3 for elite) foot units each, with foot archer units(incl HCs) adding max two more arrows based on total attack of units inside. While ofcourse not a stat buff, it allows unique strategies like defending towns with elephant towers! and hopping in monks as scouts close in and convert on their retreat!!

This would make them truly unique(compared to just increasing fire rate) and give EA a role in imperial/trash wars, allowing a few skirms/HC/monks to shelter themselves mid battle if faced with a mass of counters/cavalry.

PLUS it wont allow any higher levels of focus firing (half the arrows auto target) while fixing the excruciatingly low damage output.

My sentiment about these two ideas are already being echoed(although not yet as both changes together) by a LOT OF people on the aoe site forum now.

Considering EAs still die like flies to halbs and skirms after these changes, EAs will function as temporary meatshields for any ranged army that also does some spray damage at the start of a battle/a defense.

Also there is no increase to range!! So it can be in the frontlines!

I hereby plead all to consider that making this unit a tower/archer hybrid with higher damage output is unlikely to make the Indians OP, and bring unique battle strategies in the game. Even if that happens, its price can be increased further(but its UNIQUENESS/USABILITY should not be lost)

DONT FUSS ABOUT THE DETAILS HERE we just need to MAKE some BIG change HAPPEN to EA in next patch!

    Too Intimate

Playing random team games, I am noticing that a lot of games have 1 spectator. Is there any explanation for that? Are people that bored that they spectate below average team games?

    Mongols vs Huns

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 08:20 AM PDT

Hi, during this quarantine i'm playing some AoE HD (aok & conquerors) and im playing with Mongols against a guy who plays with Huns. The last game i tried to go defensive and made a lot of FU Camels and some Mangudai and Scorpions to counter his army of paladins and halberdiers. He spam Paladin, Halberdiers and FU rams and some trebuchet. I read that Camels are not a great counter to Paladin and with the Mongols is even worse because they lack the last heavy cab and cab archer armor (but they have FU infantry, the Huns are the same but FU cavalry and not FU infantry). In the last game he made two big sieges that made me fall back and he had enough room to make a lot of trash units and win. What can i do to really counter those units? I'm thinking to go scout rush the next game and not wait because he really plays lategame, but i want to know in case the strat falls apart.

Are there really so many good players?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 11:18 PM PDT

So again tried 1v1 rank match today; matched against a guy ranked 6000+, elo around 1150.

    He goes brits.
    - 5 vills on sheeps (I believe not that many players know 5 on sheep is enough for brits)
    - lures his boars with perfect timing, by making sure he took all the food from his sheep/previous boar before switching
    - raids hard with scouts taking advantage of hills
    - good resource management with no excessive accumulated resources

So when you play like that on aoe2de, you are only ranked #6000+ ? He has 54% wins with 56 games, so his elo is about right.
Are there really so many good players?

Maps with lots of shore fish are not interesting because people almost always pick Indians

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 07:23 PM PDT

Maps like slopes have lots of shore fish. Competitive players almost always pick indians to take advantage of the fish bonus. Virtually all of hidden cup was mirror matchups with indians on this map. There is a trend for mappers to include more and more shorefish in ponds on new maps. That's not a good trend for the game.

I finally made it over 1100 tonight in DE. Haven't been over 1100 since my first game (when it went to 1114 provisional after I won my first game). None of my real life friends would understand.

How do you micro monks for healing?

    Posted: 20 Apr 2020 01:15 AM PDT

Topic. I've never really been able to use them effectively (even though I play the Teutons and that healing range makes me want to use them as ETK pocket medics). The problem is that I have no idea how to properly micro monks in the first place, much less for healing specifically. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

What should I do as Mongols in early castle age?

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 07:30 PM PDT

I lose a lot of games after gaining a huge advantage in feudal age because I don't know what to do in castle age even when I get there first. I usually scout rush, most of the time successful. Then I follow up with archers and/or skirmishers. Often times at my level (1070 elo) where everyone tries to fast castle I do devastating damage. In the worst cases I hit a castle time similar to them, usually earlier. However, once they get to castle age I am in trouble. Unless I have a huge lead and just kill them with crossbows the game drags on for a long time. I lost games after having a 15 villager lead in feudal age and getting to castle a minute or two faster.

They either amass a lot of skirmishers and kill my crossbows or manage to get enough knights out to kill my crossbows while I struggle to decide what to do. I know going for mangudai early is a good thing to do but they still die against skirms and you need a lot of them to really stop a group of knights. Also, getting castles up while still building town centers and units seems hard. I tried going for my own knights or camels but the food and gold are needed to get upgrades and mangudai. My questions are:

How do I deal with a lot of knights or a lot of skirmishers as Mongols?

When should I go on stone and how much to get a decent castle timing while not tanking too much economy?

Is it worth it to switch into something else (like camels vs knights or skirmishers) before mangudai?

When should I stop archer/crossbow production and completely switch to mangudai?

    Forward production in late-game slugfests

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 05:47 PM PDT

    Forward production in late-game slugfests

If it takes a halberdier 20 seconds to run from a barracks to an ongoing fight — slightly more than a trebuchet's range — during that time they could have killed two hussars that were attacking another unit. Basically, for free.

    Something to think about.

    Differences between DE and HD

    Posted: 19 Apr 2020 09:16 PM PDT

Thinking about getting DE soon, was wondering a few things:

Are there differences between the two games such that build orders that worked in HD would need to be modified for DE?

The unit counters that held true for HD, do they still hold true in DE?
