This game reminds me of how fun games used to be.

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 04:31 AM PDT

I used to play this game about 2 decades ago and recently grabbed that deal on the Microsoft store after watching trump play it on twitch.

I've lost like 75% of my games so far and I don't even care. It's just so much fun. It reminds me of how much fun video games used to be.

I normally play league of legends or hearthstone but those games usually just make me frustrated. Anger, dopamine, anger, dopamine, rinse and repeat.

    AOE2 is actually FUN.

I have a problem through. I'm totally addicted. I just played a game where my opponent built only elephants and destroyed my whole base. I still had a bunch of wood and food, so I snuck a few villagers they missed off. Then built like 10 barracks and proceeded to spam halberdiers and ended up actually winning the game. I couldn't stop laughing the whole time.

    All Ranked ELO Ranking Distribution

Hello all, I just recently started back on AOE2 DE a few weeks ago. I like statistics, so I like to make graphs in my free time. I got interested by the post by Friendlylouie, so I decided to add more information. I did try to pull the AOE2:HD data, but it does not seem to work. It just pulls AOE2:DE data, so it does not work for HD data yet, because of a bug. Anyways, here are all the graphs with tables for easy reading :)

My greatest AoE2 moment will always be the time I lost half the HP on my villager while I was trying to quickwall him in from an onrushing wolf.

Results: The best civs for each map type

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 06:01 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

A few days ago I posted a poll with the aim being to find out the community's views on the best civs for different types of maps, broken into four categories: Open Land, Closed Land, Hybrid and Water. For the poll, I didn't ask people to rank the civs, only to choose their 10 best in no particular order. The results are below.

    Open Land (e.g. Arabia)

10 Franks - 49% (this means 49% of people included Franks in their top 10)

    9 Khmer - 52%

    8 Vikings - 60%

    7 Britons - 68%

    6 Mongols - 71%

    5 Huns - 76%

    4 Mayans - 79%

    2 Chinese & Persians - 84%

    1 Aztecs - 93%

It's sad to see the fall of Franks, who were formerly a top tier civ on Arabia now only just holding on to their place in the top 10. Personally I think they are still underrated. Otherwise, I don't think there are any great surprises here, only that even more people didn't include Aztecs, Chinese, Persians and especially Mayans in their top 10! Huns and Mongols will always be popular civs on Arabia, as will Vikings and Britons for their economies.

    Closed Land (e.g. Arena)

    10 Cumans - 44%

    9 Spanish - 49%

    8 Mayans - 51%

    7 Mongols - 57%

    4 Aztecs, Chinese & Celts - 67%

    3 Persians - 68%

    2 Khmer 76%

    1 Britons - 82%

There are a lot of civs you could make a case for missing out here, most notably the Malay who are one of the best closed map civs due to their quick age-up times and late game spam, but otherwise this is a very strong category. This tells me that some people haven't quite realised how strong Khmer are on closed maps - something we saw a lot of in Hidden Cup 3 - because there is an argument for saying they are the best on closed maps. Britons will always be popular though because mobility is less of an issue. Cumans sneak into the top 10, probably because of their buff in the most recent patch.

    Hybrid (e.g. Four Lakes)

    10 Mayans - 35%

    9 Celts - 39%

    8 Aztecs - 43%

    7 Mongols - 49%

    6 Chinese - 62%

    5 Italians - 67%

    4 Malay - 72%

    3 Vikings - 79%

    2 Japanese - 87%

    1 Persians - 89%

I think Hybrid maps are a slightly awkward one, particularly at lower levels, and in my experience can easily be won with strong land aggression which could explain why civs like Chinese, Aztecs and Mayans are in there. However, the top five is no surprise. Persians continue to rank very highly, and the likes of Japanese, Vikings and Malay are always very solid picks on hybrid maps.

    Water (e.g. Team Islands)

    10 Spanish - 49%

    9 Saracens - 59%

    8 Byzantines - 62%

    7 Koreans - 63%

    6 Persians - 73%

    5 Portugese 74%

    4 Malay - 77%

    3 Japanese - 84%

    2 Italians - 87%

    1 Vikings - 93%

This, I think, is a surprise. Italians are viewed by the pro's as the best outright water civ, so their ranking as #2 probably shows how little exposure/appetite for water maps there is at lower levels. I would swap the rankings of Vikings and Italians, but otherwise I think this is a fair enough top 10 as they are all solid picks.

I'd like to buy an Age of Empires game, where do I start?

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 05:09 AM PDT

    Hey all!

Age of Empires 2 is a game that I've played often when I was young, but I barely remember much of it. I am looking to get back into playing it again, so I was wondering where I should start.

When I search Age of Empires 2 on Steam, I find "Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition", "Age of Empires II (2003)", "Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition + Age of Empires II (2003)" and a bunch of DLC.

What difference does definitive edition make? Does it include the DLC? Which one should I buy?

    Beating Britons on Hideout

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 04:59 AM PDT

I have recently lost quite a few games to the Britons on hideout. I have been playing for a few weeks now and I am a 1350 rated player trying to keep improving. At the moment, I usually play Persians and the openings I have practiced are Scouts, FC Boom, and FC 1TC forward seige + knights + monks push (Hoang style). I am open to learning more civs and strategies though and this situation is good motivation!

I feel my scout rush is not much use on hideout because of the walls and the otherwise closed nature of the map. When I try a FC 1TC Siege push they got Crossbow and outranged my scorpions and mangonels - I feel they defend really well in castle age with their long range archers. If I boom then Britons eventually beat me with mass archers, halbs and trebs... their lategame is sick. Maybe I am too slow to apply pressure post boom but as I said, I feel like they defend really well in Castle Age.

So my question is what are the best strategies to defeat the Britons (with other strong meta civs)?

Also, I have heard pros such as TheViper and either Hera or Daut (can't remember which one) saying that Vikings are a strong counter to the Britons. Can somebody explain this to me?

Can't play with my flatmate AoE2 DE

    Posted: 12 Apr 2020 03:44 AM PDT

    Hey everyone,

my flatmate and I recently upgraded to DE to beat the boredome during Corona.

Unfortunately we have lots of problems which prevent us from playing the game.

    1. We have trouble finding eachothers game in the multiplayer lobby even though we have unique game names or invite each other. Sometimes it takes 10 minutes just to start a single game.
    2. When the games start usually we lose connection in the first 10-20 minutes, we managed to complete 1 single game out of the 5 games we tried.

If I play ranked games in the lobby I don't have those issues, I play all games without a probleme.

Furthermore we played lots of games on HD in the last months and suddenly we can't find our games there either.

We both play on PC and downloaded the games this week. My Game version is the following 101.101.36202.0 4819260.

Can you guys help us figure out our mistakes?

    Thank you in advance

Tried Ranked for the first time. Ended up 9 - 1!

Tried Ranked for the first time. Ended up 9 - 1!

I have been a single player only fan for a while(Tried voobly about a year ago with not much success). I watch T90's streams, and some of Viper and Hera's videos, but I have not actually played ranked. t90's Low Elo Legends really inspired me to give it a go , so I decided to finally try it out, and put all of my knowledge I have absorbed watching the pros into practice. It turned out pretty well I think. I never expected to go 9 - 1. Not sure where this puts me as a percentile, but i'll take #2329! I am wondering if I was just up against people who were not quite up to the same level as me or if I had a couple good days. I've practiced build orders a decent amount but haven't mastered them yet. I feel like general game knowledge helped me more than anything.

tldr; Try out ranked if you've been scared or anxious about it. I tried it for the first time and ended up better than expected.
