Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 9 Week 3: Goths vs Khmer

Two civs that are definitely either you love 'em or you hate 'em

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Incas vs Spanish, and next up is the Goths vs Khmer!

    Goths: Infantry civilization:

    • Infantry cost -20/25/30/35% per Age
    • Infantry +1 attack vs buildings per Age starting in Feudal Age (+3 total)
    • Villagers +5 attack vs wild boar (and rhinos and elephants); hunters carry +15 meat
    • Loom is free
    • +10 maximum population in Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Barracks work +20% faster
    • Unique Unit: Huskarl (Anti-archer infantry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Anarchy (Can create Huskarls at Barracks)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Perfusion (Barracks work +100% faster)

Khmer: Siege Scorpion and Elephant civilization

    • No buildings are required as prerequisites for other buildings or advancing in Age
    • Farmers do not need to drop off food at TCs/Mills; food instantly goes to stockpile when farming
    • Battle Elephants move +15% faster
    • Villagers can garrison inside Houses
    • TEAM BONUS: Scorpions +1 range
    • Unique Unit: Ballista Elephant (An elephant-mounted Scorpion)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Tusk Swords (Battle Elephants +3 attack)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Double Crossbow (Ballista Eles and Scorpions fire additional projectile)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • These two civs have swung wildly in strength throughout recent months. Nowadays, with Khmer most recently nerfed and Goths now buffed, how do things stand for 1v1 Arabia/Serengeti? Goths now have free Loom to give them a strong early eco, but that will still be outpaced later on by Khmer farms.
    • The true strength of Goths lies in their early-mid Imperial Age, whereas Khmer shine in post-Imperial Age when they can get their elephants/scorpions in good numbers. Is the strength of elephants and scorpions enough without all upgrades to stave off the Goth infantry spam throughout early-mid Imperial?
    • On closed maps like Arena and Black Forest, Goths need to worry less about their poor defenses and lack of long-term eco bonus, whereas Khmer can comfortably go quite greedy in a boom. Which civ gets more powerful more quickly when it comes to closed maps?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Italians vs Mongols. Hope to see you there! :)

This game is FUN! Newer players just throw your self out there!

    Posted: 20 May 2020 08:00 PM PDT

Since I don't have anyone else to share this with that would appreciate it... I'll share it with y'all! I just successfully stopped a tower rush! I am a low ELO legend (889) but... I learned to not panic, focus on economy and take town the tower with my villagers.

Everything worked out PERFECT. It is so rewarding and fun when you start to understand the game and improve. So newer players don't be scared, hop right in and enjoy yourself! With every loss you get better.

PS. Shout out to T90 for his low ELO legends cast. Also shout out to MembTV for hosting battle of Africa 2. All of this community is great, thank you! Ill see you on the battlefield!

How to flank/encircle units in AoE2 DE?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 05:03 AM PDT

How can I do that effectively for units that can kite or just run away? Say, like Rattan Archers.

Talking about best case scenario where I do have knights for example, but I wouldn't mind sandwiching knights with halbs more effectively, because often times when I try to meet units, they tend to just do a 90 degree angle and walk past without any problem, even if I have higher numbers.

Does "Flank" actually allow you to do that automatically? What if I meet them with staggered instead? Thinking that maybe the staggered formation is closed enough to not allow units past?

    What is considered a noob?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 04:51 AM PDT

Looking at this chart of the 1v1 RM elo distribution on DE, it seems that:

    • +- 50% of players are below 1000
    • +-90% are below 1300
    • +-95% are below 1400

So what is considered a noob? What categories do people usually think of? Noob, intermediate, expert, pro,...? And what percentages of the player base would fit in each category?

    Suggestion- elo flair

    Posted: 21 May 2020 12:07 AM PDT

It would be fun and also nice to know whether I'm listening to a bookworm or an actual warrior. 11

Simple, whichever elo you prefer mentioning mention it. Eg. voobly:500, hd:900, or de: 3000.

This is so I know important tips. If viper or Daut writes a 20 page guide I will ignore it but if /u/CommercialCres9 says anything I will listen because most likely the things he say are going to be my own level.

How do people get in to Tournaments?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 07:24 AM PDT

Okay I know the title is a very open ended question so I will specify,

I love this game, I love the community and I love watching the pros play in tournaments against each other. Im not deluded enough to think I am going to get to that level, that being said I am a very competitive person by nature.
Currently im sitting at roughly 1200 Elo on DE, and was wondering if there was some sort of noob tournament that happens regularly, or a group of fellow like minded people who have some sort of division.
I am not looking to win any sort of prize (Other than bragging rights, the greatest prize of all) I just want to play with people around my elo in some sort of comp.

Yes I know ranked is technically what I am looking for, but idk I just think a tournament would be exciting, even if I get rolled first round :)

    So yeah,
Are there amateur league tournaments and if so how do I find them?

    Worst Tilting Moment?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 06:59 AM PDT

Easily mine was being completely lamed by an Incan opponent. Stole my sheep and micro'd them so my TC shot them, lamed all of my deer, walled me in and then castle dropped me right when I got to castle age.

    ...

(I wasn't actually mad, I was laughing and swearing at the same time).

    teaming up/playing regularly

    Posted: 21 May 2020 03:13 AM PDT

hey guys, I am usually playing with my brother. We like to play 2v2 but would be fun to do some bigger teamgames (lobby teammates tend to be somewhat unreliable/prone to flaming).
So if anyone wants to regularly play let me know and i will invite you to our little discord.

Haven't really gone into ranked, will start soon, but i guess rating would be around 1k (we play a lot and got some of the basics down).

Otherwise I'd say rating is no issue, just be nice and motivated.

Can someone please look at this game and explain how is possible!

    Posted: 21 May 2020 07:47 AM PDT

Im a AOE 2 DE casual player been playing for years, but i still make a lot of mistakes and need to improve a lot of things. but some games leave me wondering if people are using unfair methods. the blue player in this replay does not seem like a much better player than me, he makes a lot of mistakes too and even looses it villager but manages to keep up and out boom everyone in some fashion that I can not explain. please if you can look and tell me what you see. Thanks

    What is a noob?

    Posted: 21 May 2020 07:30 AM PDT

    Help.

Me and a bunch of mates have returned to this game 20+ years since we used to play it in our youth.

Back then we used to find some reasonably balanced games, win some and lose some. On balance most games were competitive.

We were by no means brilliant, but definitely competitive.

We have been back in the game for maybe 3 weeks? Playing quite a few games, but we are consistently getting torched.

Sometimes one of my weaker mates will get done in Fuedal type rush, sometimes we just get rolled later on, but it is really rare that we are winning games.

We are making an unranked lobby match, calling for "new noobs" or "beginner noobs" and so often there's a player who is just on another planet in terms of ability.

What is it with people who are evidently not beginners joining those games?

Any suggestions on how to find more balanced games? Play ranked? Research the people in the lobby and kick them?

Any other tips, other than get good?

Failed to connect to multiplayer services

    Posted: 21 May 2020 06:24 AM PDT

    hey everyone,

i've just played a 1v1 match and was disconnected from the match. since then, i somehow can't connect to the multiplayer services any longer ("Sorry, failed to connect to multiplayer services. Please try again later"). i'm running DE on a bootcamp partition (mac) with win10 installed. up to just now, i've never had any problems running DE and only extremely rarely experienced disconnects (i've also talked to a friend who can still connect with no problems).

has anyone experienced sth like this before?

    thanks for your help,

    m

Looking to improve my Korean game (1100)

    Posted: 21 May 2020 07:45 AM PDT

Hey, So I've been diving back into ranked and mostly playing 2v2. I usually go Koreans and try to towerdrop an opponent right as I go feudal with 6~ villagers and a few on stone back home to keep the towers going. I also go archers to stop enemy vills from fighting back and to increase the pressure.

I've had multiple games where the opponent is completely crippled as I deny all his resources, but I've seen a pattern from the games I lose.

Whenever my opponent successfully techs into knights and archers I just do not know what to do, I guess mangonels and pikemen are good, but I am way too late with teching into mangonels for it to be any effective.

Do I need to tech into my follow up earlier? It feels like I commit to feudal really hard and if I can't keep my opponent in feudal, I almost always lose to knights.

Any tips/strategies/oversights on my part are welcome!

Clans Ladder or Platform for clans to find others of the same level?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 07:46 PM PDT

    Hello everyone!
I have one month playing AOE DE, with friends like the old times, and I want to know if existe some clan platform or ladder, where you can search match between clans?

For the momento Im thinking in a Steam group and of course make the clan in the game.
But I remember my old times playing Soldat with Clans, and we have a forum where all the clans can discuss and organize matchs. I love to find something similar.

    Thanks!
