Can't stop thinking about AOE @_@

    Posted: 20 May 2020 05:19 AM PDT

I don't know how many of you guys have this, but I'm just constantly thinking about AOE2 while I'm supposed to be working.

Just, constantly checking this reddit and watching YouTube vids in-between work. Or when cooking. Or doing the laundry, etc...

Not sure if this hyper fixation is a good thing or a very bad thing....

Only 2 civs are outside of the window of 45-55 winrate at Average ELO

And one of those civs is the Malay, who are only struggling because of the bug.

    The other. Is the Koreans.

Certain civs are not played very often, either perhaps because they are difficult (Burmese) or just not fun to play (Portuguese)

This is consistent at all ELO levels.

I should point out that at high ELO levels, the winrates are very drastically different. With the Khmer and the Indians having less than 40% winrate, The Koreans and Berbers with less than 45%, And the Ethiopians and the new Teutons being above 55%.

Even so, that affects a minority of the game.

This is a job well done. So thanks.

...But please fix the disconnection issues that still plague the game. Along with Melee pathing.

Are these bases similar in your opinion?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 03:44 AM PDT

My opponent claimed my base (blue) had a much better position than his (red) after I won. I felt it was a pretty even game, so I thought it was a weird comment.

But I'm a new player (1050 elo atm), and I wanted to know what he meant. So I checked the replay. Maybe his third gold is located a bit dangerous? I honestly don't know what he is talking about. It seems pretty even to me.

I would love your input, and improve my skill at evaluating positions.

Not feeling confident in my game?

    Posted: 20 May 2020 04:07 AM PDT

    Hello,

currently i have the problem that Iam not feeling confident with the way I play this game.

Iam playing Britons and Iam using the "straight up Archers" Build Order from Hera, and its does work quite well, especially on Arabia! (Brought me from ~1050 to 1150).

The Problem is that I heard Viper saying its never good to go straight Archers because they are so easly countered by Skirms, what is true - if I dont fuck up my enemys economy Feudal / if i dont switch to knights early enough, I do lose these games.

So i tried to go Huns with Scouts into Archers (also a build order from Hera), but it's just not as effective when its about winning games. Its alot more difficult and I just dont feel confident while playing it.

So should i go with the "easy to counter" Archers Build Order or should i try to perfect my Scouts into Archers Build Order?

    Also:

I cant play the same Build Order every game (I guess?), so when do i decide to switch / go for something new?

    Steam v Voobly

    Posted: 20 May 2020 03:53 AM PDT

I'm playing HD and looking to improve my game by playing 1v1s.

What's the best platform to find good opponents - Voobly or Steam?

I've only recently started playing ranked on Steam and I think my Steam ELO should be ~ 1500 (it's higher because the default start is 1600 and I've played very few ranked games)

Using this game during the pandemic to fight depression-connecting with friends and family

    Posted: 19 May 2020 05:27 PM PDT

I struggle with some psychiatric conditions, depression being one of them, and this game has been one of the few that can hold my interest most days. I don't do much other than a game or two whenever my dad and bestie have time to do a match against the computer, but it's super convenient that my new refurbished laptop can at least run this game. It's really nice, and has some great replay value-after being away from HD for a year or so, I was a little rusty playing, my feudal/castle times were relatively slow and comparable with someone who's never memorized a build order-although I did manage a 20min castle age time one game, which on the Art of War tutorial is the lowest grade(and all I had to do was vaguely remember to stop upgrading techs in Feudal and put the bare minimum of gold miners and wood cutters down to make it. Made things a lot easier. Still haven't had the interest to use the Art of War to learn more strategies.). I'm the best of us, and my bestie juuuuust started playing this game about a month ago, whereas my dad is using an old set of skills from back when this game came out in 1999(We played a lot of it back them. Some of my favorite memories are from that game and the Conquerors Expansio). He and I played a little bit during HD, but it never really took off to be a huge past time. Even though we've only tried Moderate AI opponents once(spoiler alert: We lost) and Standard difficulty is kind of getting boring, it's honestly such a nice break from feeling like a sad sack of potatoes all the time. Thanks Microsoft Studios and Forgotten Empires for releasing the DE, and for only 20 dollars, too. I feel so thankful I get to enjoy quality time with some of my favorite people.

    Struggling with Mongols

    Posted: 20 May 2020 01:35 AM PDT

Hey guys, I'm a noob relatively ( ~950 elo ), I'm on 2 wins out of 11, got spanked in my first five games just playing random civs, decided to do the whole stick with 1 civ 1 strat thing, so I chose Mongols and my God do I struggle with making any sort of meaningful push.

For example my last game I played Arena against some dude playing Persians, I hit castle before him ( ~17 mins), I get 4 relics, I'm sitting on mad bank making vills out of 3 TCS, I know he's going knights, I see he's going knights, I make a few Mangudais and then get to imp, he imps just after me, he has a gigantic army of soon to be Paladins and Persian trash xbows, trebbing down my castles and my mom isn't even next to me to comfort me, at this point I panic stables and make Hussars to raid and try to keep producing Mangudai, which I then proceed to throw away to his castles while trying to snipe his trebs, I eventually just YOLO it, siege ram his walls and send Hussars in but his army's so big he can afford to send back 10 Paladins to deal with my Hussars while still smashing my gate and raiding me to shit.

By the time the game ends I'm sitting on a largest army of ~50 while my opponent has like 100, this is a theme for me btw, I don't know how to deal with having my castle trebbed other than trying to snipe and throwing away units, my production is always lagging and I struggle to get an army of more than 40 units, my feudal and castle time are solid usually, on open maps I even manage to snipe vills by scout rushing, but once I hit imp I always lose to huge death balls, be it Goth pikes and Husks, Malay skirms and two handed swords, Persian Paladins and xbows, if you can name a deathball, chances are I lost to it, and it's usually during post imp where Mongols are supposedly unstoppable, do you guys have any tips for me?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 10:37 PM PDT

The devs are more than capable of adding in the necessary features for it through some DLC. Majority of player base still plays single player mostly and I think it could be something really fun that a lot of people would like. You could even create new campaigns based around it

I'm back in the game! With a win!

    Posted: 19 May 2020 12:31 PM PDT

After years of watching T90 and other AOE2 streams and dreaming of playing this game I loved as a kid, I finally was able to play my first ever ranked game of AOE2. From watching so much I'm strong on unit counters, and macro (theory) but as a 30 year old guy who hasn't actually played the game in 15 years, and never knew so much as a hotkey let alone a build order there were going to be serious issues on the micro side.

Was all set to go goths because that seemed like a safe pick given they really just do one thing (infantry), and my boar lures would be less likely to result in a dead villager, but then I saw Cross (4 ponds) as the map and made a last second panic switch to Japanese because that's what everyone seemed to do in HC3, and I just watched a Spirit of the Law video.

My opponent went Celts, and the stars aligned from there. I successfully docked two ponds, matched my opponents Feudal/Castle age times (something like 14 mins and 22 mins). House walled my base (kind of), boomed into elite skirm and tower defense on my exposed gold and sealed off a pretty easy win.

I can't describe how cool it was after months of watching to raid my opponents woodline. I can't describe how cool it was to castle a hill with an extra gold beside it and push from there. I can't describe how scary it was when Woad Raiders sniped my trebs, or how satisfying it was when the Samurai I built to counter the Woads stopped his mass ram push up the hill against my castle before they landed a single hit.

I know I shouldn't be feeling cocky about being a 1050 ELO opponent, who never counter attacked my base (which would have left me in shambles since I can't multi task. He never tried to move out from his main pond either and gave me a free two pond fish boom but holy cow it feels good anyway.

New to the subreddit so not sure how posts like this might get received but I love this game, and the community and just had to gloat a bit about my first ever ranked AOE2 game ending in a win! I could barely sleep last night after playing it! Coming for you 1100 ELO guys next, and I might even know a hotkey for that game so look out!
