I don't get it. What does one get out of making 4v4 "ULTRA NOOB" games only to boom 1K+ ahead in a flash and scout rush some dude with 3 blacksmiths and 9 militia? Why are there so many of these people? Why would they not rather play ranked to continue to get better at the game and challenge themselves?

I guess this is more of a rant but fuck it's annoying.

How think about Berbers as camel civ in team game

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 03:28 AM PDT

I like camels as counter of knight, and their fast move.

So I like to play indians.

And I wondered Berbers also can do a role of camel civ as better as indians.

They don't have imp camels but have cheaper Camels and can use knight that counter xbows.

How think about Berbers as camel civs? they can do well like indians?

Just played a game and it would not let me build a siege workshop?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 05:39 PM PDT

Has this ever happened to anyone? I was the mongols playing the mayans in a 1v1 ranked game. Very clearly in the castle age with my 2TCs. Had the resources. It was just greyed out for some reason.

Edit: Apparently you're supposed to build a blacksmith first and there was so much fuedal pressure that I forgot to. I will leave this up so maybe someone else can learn from it. Still a noob I guess. Don't worry though fam, I still won the game.

    Goths VS Teutons

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 04:12 AM PDT

    Hi all,

So yesterday i found myself up against the Teutons in a 1v1 RM on Hideout (I was the Goths). When i saw my opponent was the Teutons i was trying to think about how i am going to beat them.

Long story short, i lost due to their infantry superiority and better cavalry.

How should you counter the Teutons as a Goth player?

Teutonic Champions are tankier than Goths.

    Goths have poor Archers.

    Goths have poor Cavalry.

Teutons have better Cavalry and stronger infantry.

Whats the best option when facing up to this civ as the Goths?

Considering the fact it's the hardest unit to get in the game, there SHOULD be some way to improve it, i.e. special unique techs becoming available after converting the stable. It's a meme of an unit as of now.

Change My Mind: You shouldn't be able to play multiplayer until you've completed the Art of War

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:11 AM PDT

After three 2v2 games in a row where my teammates have no idea what a build order is or what they're doing, I'm convinced. Maybe 1v1 would be allowed because if you want to waste your time and ELO, go for it. 2v2 and up should be locked until you have a medal on at least the original AoW scenarios

Idea to end the "90% of players are noobs" controversy

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 08:07 AM PDT

I've been thinking a lot about the controversy of who counts as a noob (full disclosure: I am 13xx). I am in the camp that believes that any system that considers players in the top 10% or even 5% (roughly players in the1320s and 1440s in the ladder right now, respectively) as noobs is flawed. Of course, "noob" is a slippery concept—usually applied to oneself when comparing oneself to better players, and applied to others when one is the better player. So, how can we find a common standard for who counts as a noob? Those who claim that players in the top 10% are noobs usually make some version of the following argument: at this level, players are still unable to consistently execute close-to-perfect build orders, they still make tons of obvious mistakes past early feudal, and their micro and macro fall apart fairly quickly—therefore, they are noobs even if they are better than 90% of the player base. Just because they are better than someone who doesn't know what a build order is and can't even produce vills from their TC consistently (Daut's infamous "fat kids playing tennis"), it doesn't mean they aren't noobs.

I think there is something true about this argument. It doesn't make sense to compare 13xx players with players who don't know (or care to learn) build orders, because the latter are casual players. And let me be clear, it's perfectly OK to be a casual player. We all enjoy the game in different ways and have different priorities. Casual AOE2 players choose to invest the hundreds (maybe even thousands) of hours it takes to become a 13xx player in playing other video games or enjoy other activities. Or even if they do spend thousands of hours in playing against the AI or playing in 500 ELO multiplayer games, it is because that's how they enjoy the game and are not interested in playing AOE2 competitively.

Because of the slippery nature of the term "noob", I think we should rather speak of casual and competitive players—and within competitive players, distinguish between low-level, mid-level, high-level, and pro players. Of course, who counts as a competitive player is also a matter of debate. To me, the threshold for being a competitive player is more about mindset than ability. A competitive player is someone who cares about getting better at multiplayer AOE2. For example, it is someone who chooses to spend countless hours practicing boring build orders, watching recs, and studying civ match-ups, rather than playing the game for fun. To me (and players in a lower ELO range probably have better insight on this, so let me know what you think), the threshold for competitive players is roughly around 800 ELO. At this point, players start trying to learn build orders and learn more about how to improve their game—they are not just playing for fun, but also to get better. Of course, some will be more serious at getting better, but that just means that they will eventually move on to higher ELOs. In fact, I believe that it is best to think of ELO differentials in terms of how serious one becomes at playing the game competitively (at least until one reaches 17xx or so, where natural talent may start playing a larger role).

So based on this arbitrary starting point, I would propose the following sketch for drawing distinctions in the competitive AOE2 player base:

    800-1000: low-level competitive players

    1000-1200: low-to-mid-level competitive players

    1200-1400: mid-level competitive players

    1400-1600: mid-to-high-level competitive players

1600 and above: high-level competitive players and pro players (given my ELO I can't really assess what a good cutoff would be here).

The exact ranges are not as important to me. Perhaps we need even more fine-grained distinctions. What I think is key about my proposal is that it highlights that players in the 1000-1400 range are by no means "noobs". They have invested hundreds of hours into getting better at the game (they are not just playing for fun) and their being mid-level competitive players reflects that. I have more thoughts on this, but this post is too long already, so I may get to them in the comment section or in another post.

Top Unique Counter vs Throwing Axeman

Top Unique Counter vs Throwing Axeman

The Throwing Axeman is the unique unit of the Franks in Age of Empires II. It is an infantry unit with a ranged melee attack. Today I tested them and here come the results:

    https://preview.redd.it/xx8vvrth92851.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=a71348ba6aa56b99c090236ccb6d56d6eb111a4f

Youtube ELITE THROWING AXEMAN| Best Unique Counters | Tierlist | Age of Empires 2

For the tests I assume PostImperial Age, no micro and equal resources, for example it could be 22 Paladins (60F, 75G) vs 33 Kamayuks (60F, 30G). Then after the fight I count the HP of the winning unit and > 60% HP would be an A-Tier counter. I did all that 5 times to get a good average.

The values on the icons stand for percentage HP remaining. So if it says "36" on UnitA it means that UnitA won with 36% of their combined starting HP left; a negative number (eg "-45") means that this unit lost and the other unit still has 45% of their HP remaining. This is always an average, so in this case the remaining HP could have been 40%, 44%, 45%, 46% and 50% in the 5 tests.

Disclaimer: This is not a ranking of how useful a unit is overall. It simply measures how well units do when patrolled into each other. Units have many attributes such as speed, range, attack damage and armor. This mostly focuses on attack and armor by design. So Teutonic Knights are expected to perform better than Mangudai (bc they can't make use of speed and range). This approach has its shortcomings but can hopefully still be useful because you know how it was created. Let me know what you would change :) (More detailed explanation is in the beginning of the video)

Today I tested fully upgraded Heavy Cavalry Archers and here are the results. They can trade cost effectively with Mangudai and Flaming Camels finally win!

    Teamgame Civ Recommendations

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 06:02 AM PDT

    Hi Guys!

Recently I've been playing TG's (4v4) with the same group of friends, and while they always play the same civ, I mostly go random, which often doesn't work out, because they're really good with their civ while I have to figure out what I'm going to do, so my flank tends to be vulnerable...

The question I've been asking myself is which civ I could play to best help out my team.

My teammates go Mongols (Mangudai, Siege) Franks (Paladin) and Khmer (Elephants) and we're around 1500 Elo, trying to aim higher. 99% of our games go to post imp, so a civ with strong late game units would be preferred.

I was thinking Vietnamese or Berbers, what do you guys think would compliment our team composition?

PS: In 1v1s I love playing Lithuanians, but since the team already has Paladins and Elephants I think I should go for something else...

    Lack of DE Mods

    Posted: 29 Jun 2020 06:42 PM PDT

What's the deal with it? There used to be alot of CBA games, LoTR & GoT Diplomacy Games, Paintball, Tower Defense... you name it! HD had a great modding community and DE's seems lackluster at best. I ran a few of the higher ranked mods from the 'workshop' and they didn't work. I'm begging you, if you can easily import some of the old mods from HD, please DO!

How to message one specific player only in game?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2020 12:19 AM PDT

Right, so I have been trying to figure this out for a while, I am sure it is possible as I am fairly sure I have seen people do it in streams. I know how to message only enemy etc., but I want to know how to message just one specific player. This function would be super useful in diplomacy matches or other games where teams are not fixed. Cheers in advance!
