    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 02:49 AM PDT

When it was first revealed I was really disappointed tbh. Since they showed the enhanced graphics mod with everything up I thought the readability and everything looked so bad. After this year I can't look back. The old version to me looks so outdated when I once thought it was crisp. Plus this esports boom we're having. I've never been happier to be a AoE 2 fan than rn! Thanks forgotten empires!

Advice for anxious ranked players: play with music in the background!

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 05:50 PM PDT

If you tend to get anxious playing ranked, I recommend playing with a relaxed/chill playlist in the background. It makes playing a lot more enjoyable and wayyy less stressful. It also prevents tilting since you're probably singing along instead of getting mad you are getting trushed or playing against mongols for the 40th time. Definitely give it a try, it's changed the way I play. I use Spotify in the background and use my phone to change songs/volume.

    Gather point for all military

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 03:29 AM PDT

    Hello,

Is there a way to make all the military buildings (e.g stables) to garrison the units inside once they ready, without clicking one by one ?

I can make a CG and set gather point for all but the Q is if I can do the same for garrison ?

Unused units in pro games, which and why?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 08:07 AM PDT

Let's not discuss balance suggestions, but rather do an analysis.

Some units are never (or barely) used in pro games. I'd like to make a list of those and discuss exactly why we never see them. Please correct me if I'm wrong about any and let's keep it civil :)

    Shared units

    • Steppe Lancer. This one is discussed a lot already, but I think the main reasons are that all other cavalry are simply better options and/or it doesn't have a clear role to fullfill.
    • Siege Tower. This is an incredibly niche unit, getting a few units over a wall. Maybe only usable in Arena-like maps? Also since you already have a siege workshop then it seems rams/mangonels are better at dealing with walls.

Secondary Unique units, these are the main ones I'd like to discuss.

    • Slingers. Slingers are an anti-infantry archer, but the basic archer line already fills that role and get longer range. And Inca's get fully upgraded archers. These also cost food rather than normal archers which cost wood, and on most maps I think wood is less scarce.
    • Genitours. These I think are only good as a team-bonus for an ally that doesn't have good trash (mostly just for Turks?). The anti-archer part is better filled by normal skirmishers and they don't do enough damage for anything else. Maybe they can help against cavalry archers?
    • Missionaries. The faster speed does not compensate for the shorter range, since they still convert at the same speed your missionaries are just monks that have a higher risk of death?

    Primary Unique Units

    • Samurai, these are very niche because they're primarily good against unique units, but then only if they get in melee range. So primarily against melee unique units but they still need cover from archer fire. I think most unique melee units aren't used, so then these have no purpose right?
    • Jaguar Warriors. The jaguar warriors for Aztecs are almost never seen. Is this because their other infantry options (pikemen, eagles, champions) simply fill the roles better? And aztecs already get insane damage on their infantry, so they don't need a 'better' champion.
    • War Elephants. These die easily to monks, which are quite popular in pro games already. Or worse, they're converted before the player can delete them, giving the opponent an elephant that they can use against you.
    • Ballista Elephant, These die easily to monks, which are quite popular in pro games already. Or worse, they're converted before the player can delete them, giving the opponent an elephant that they can use against you.
    • Elephant Archers, These die easily to monks, which are quite popular in pro games already. Or worse, they're converted before the player can delete them, giving the opponent an elephant that they can use against you.
    • Konnicks. I think these were nerfed and then never used again? Perhaps they are simply too weak compared to knights, or is the issue that they're produced from the castle/krepost rather than the stables?
    • Keshiks, I'm not sure why these are barely used. Maybe because people don't play tatars much.
    • Kipchaks, I'm not sure if the kipchaks should be on this list. I think most cuman players go for archers and cav rather than these units. Not sure about this though.

    hello,

Just this morning played a 4v4 in the recent patch and I was reconnected to the game after having dropped for like 30 or 40 seconds. The only downside is that the game did not pause while i was reconnecting to the servers. They could probably do something about it soon still good work by the devs.

    Top 10 players - August 2020

    Top 10 players - August 2020

    Hi everybody,

I find that there is no ranking that measures who is the best player at the moment in a satisfying way, so I made my own. My plan is to update this monthly, since it doesn't make much sense to do it more frequently given the few tournaments that are available at the moment.

The premise for this rank is to rank players based exclusively on RESULTS, i.e. tournament placing, and not who they beat. Its also meant to be a snapshot of recent results, so it only considers results for the past 4 months.

First the ranking, and then the methodology:

    https://preview.redd.it/0ak95yf688j51.png?width=2540&format=png&auto=webp&s=a31d84bf7775714676f242f1d5640319a608c60c

    Top 1: TheViper

    Top 2: TaToh

    Top 3: Hera

    Top 4: Liereyy

    Top 5: Yo

    Top 6: Nicov

    Top 7: MBL

    Top 8: Daut

    Top 9: Lan

    Top 10: TheMax

To see all the formulas and nitty gritty here is the file: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1wKM0n4mCQRD-ucwiDuYY7NCJSg7EP0pde1xDmObixE0/edit#gid=747205574

    Some general FAQ:

    Sources?

    - Placings: Liquipedia - https://liquipedia.net/ageofempires/Main_Page

    - Tournament ELO: AOE-ELO - https://aoe-elo.com/players

    - Ladder ELO: AOE2.net - https://aoe2.net/

    What tournaments were selected?

All S-Tier and A-Tier tournaments for the past 4 months (specifically that ended after the 1st of May). I also added 4 B-Tier events (excluded Euro Rumble 2020 and Red Bull Gaming World: Online Series featuring Red Bull Wololo which are somewhat odd tournaments). I'm open to feedback as to what to include, what guidelines to use to decide when to include or exclude a tournament, etc.

Where are the points coming from?

Points are connected to placing and event tier. Placing 1st in an S-tier event adds 40 points, in an A-Tier event adds 20 points and 10 in a B-Tier event. Moreover, 2nd place gets 37 points, 18 and 9 respectively. Everyone that places in one of the recorded tournaments gets at least 1 point (if they are 9-16 in a B-tier tournament for example)

This is all completely arbitrary. Open to feedback as to how to improve it.

    What does this ranking measure?

This ranking is not trying to measure relative playing skill. Tournament ELO ranking does that a bit better. This ranking is meant to rank players based on their activity and placing in tournaments. It rewards playing in a lot of tournaments vs playing few matches and keeping a high ELO due to results from last year (RiuT is top 8 in tournament ELO despite not placing in any of the tournaments taken into consideration in this ranking).

This ranking is also not measuring RM 1v1 skill. Its meant to measure overall AOE2 skill based mostly on amount of tournament money behind each format. A clear example is DMWC 3, a $10k tournament, which requires a different skillset from RM. Similarly, both Red Bull tournaments use the Empire Wars format, which although similar, is distinct to normal RM.

A key aspect of this raking is result decay. While the Tournament ELO ranking has no decay at all, if TheViper doesn't play a single match in the next 4 months he will be completely gone from the ranking. Conversely, he will still be ranked in one of the top spots of the Tournament ELO ranking.

Does this look ok? Some general thoughts:

    - Tatoh seems a bit too high (2nd), mostly due to the fact that Hera and Lierey did not participate in DM World Cup and Tatoh took part in more tournaments than everyone else (played in 8, highest overall). Is this an issue? I argue it is not. DM is a different game mode that requires a different skillset and Tatoh placing 4th shows he is a more well-rounded player than Hera and Lierey. The fact that he has been this active presents an interesting question; on the one hand being able to participate in a tournament is not trivial, which is why every player gets at least 1 point for playing in a tournament. On the other hand, at the highest level (top 1-4), the players are likely to get invited to a ton of tournaments if they are willing to play, so it might over-inflate someone's rank if they are willing to wake up at any time to play random tournaments. In essence, the key issue is the difference between tournaments where people are invited (Arabia Invitationa) vs tournaments where people have to qualify.

    - Mr_Yo seems too low (5th), which is due to him playing relatively few tournaments (5) and besides RBW I, no top 2 placements. With that in mind, Top 5 seems ok to be honest.

    - Top 11-20: The nature of the ranking and the volume of tournaments makes ranking below top 10 very difficult. You can check the file to see what I mean, but basically it will be incredibly swingy given that on average players in the 11-20th place have 2.8 tournaments placings. That being said, I'm open to suggestions on what to do. Maybe it can turn into a top 15 ranking instead of a top 10. Lemme know what you think.

That's all! Let me know what you think. Plan is to updated this monthly if there is interest from the community.

Edit: Given a lot of the feedback about what to include and what not to, here are a ton of different potential iterations:

    1- Only rank 1v1 RM

2- Only rank 1v1 RM or EW

3- Only rank 1v1 (i.e. all except team tournaments)

    4- Rank all except DM

Table is organized based on criteria #2.

How and when to use standard elephants in 1v1 games?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 06:10 AM PDT

I tend to play mostly as Vietnamese though this question should apply to all the standard elephant civs. So yer, in a 1v1 game under what scenarios should you transition into elephants?

I get the principle of using them as a meat shield for ranged units or using them as a pop efficient unit in the super late imperial setting but in reality in 1v1 games I really struggle to think of a scenario where it would be better to start producing elephants over other units.

In most cases I can think of I feel it would be always more effective to go knights and/or siege. Mangonels are better at slaughtering massed groups of infantry and hitting builds from range whilst knights have a lot of similar strengths whilst also having the speed to be able to raid whilst being less (relatively speaking) vulnerable to monks.

One scenario I can think of where it may make sense to use them to me is if you already have your opponent massively on the back foot and beat them to castle age (by a significant margin) then you could use elephants to safety knock out their TC and put in the killing blow. Another potential scenario could be to guard your trebs in combination with skirms & light cav in middle/late imp. But other than that I am really struggling to see where their value comes in.

I think the issue in my eyes is that they are too slow to raid or stop raids and they are too expensive to have any sort of mass of them prior to late imp. Because of this I find they are just too weak to monks to be useful for any sort of aggressive play.

But yer am interested to hear other peoples opinions !

Hard AI is so good that it borderline breaks the Joan of Arc campaign

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 08:33 AM PDT

So, I've been trying to complete campaigns in "hard" difficulty. Just finished the Joan of Arc campaign and, as the title suggests, saying I did not have fun is an understatement. I'm making this post to understand if this is a problem with the AI, or if I am in the minority here.

At some point we are introduced to the bombard cannons, which the protagonists brag as being a good counter to the longbowmen, a constant nuisance until that point. While correct when dealing with human players (a normal circumsance), in hard mode this is nothing but an out-of-season april fools joke. Good luck trying to hit any shots against an AI that kites shots close to perfection. You can have 6-8 cannons firing different clumped longbowmen and you will not hit a single one.

This has made the effort of dealing with longbowmen and other long range units (e.g. cannon galleons) a mostly obnoxious endeavor. The most frustrating part is that it fundamentally breaks the principles that the campaign is trying to teach. From my experience, if you try to counter as you are taught, you will have a bad time.

At this point, I would much rather have an AI that would dodge shots sporadically, much akin to what a human player would do. It would certainly allow me to play these levels without wanting to bang my head against the wall.

Are with ok with Steppe Lancer's current state?

    Posted: 25 Aug 2020 01:40 PM PDT

Edit: Tite is meant to be "Are we ok..."

Since their last nerf several months ago they're gone from the meta completely, there's almost no situation in which it's better to make them instead of knights or hussars. Shouldn't they have some sort of strategic niche?
