    Mayans Castle Play

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:25 AM PDT

    Hi,

I have been playing Mayans recently, mostly on land maps like Arabia and LN. I am an ELO 1200 - 1300 player. My usual strategy with them is to go Drush > Archers, pushing the opponent in Fuedal age. Then transitioning to XBows, upgraded with Bodkin arrow and Thumb ring, with siege support (Rams preferred) in Castle. This works well on some occassions. However, there are times when I have been hard countered by Skirms + Mangos, with a few scouts thrown in. It becomes tough for me to counter this, because my trash unit (Pikemen) get pwnd by Skirms. My xbows are busy running / avoiding the mango hits and the opponent is able to almost fully nullify any military advantage I have, mostly turning it into a win for him / her.

I understand transitioning to eagles is possibly the best answer here, or even creating a couple of Mangos of my own. My question is on the transition to Eagles. By this time in Castle age i have invested significantly in Archer line upgrades - How do i transition to Eagles from here? What are the upgrades I should chose to invest in for the Eagles transition and how should I generally play, once I stop producing X Bows and start massing Eagles? Should i mass eagle scouts earlier in Fuedal or wait for massing EWs in castle? Should I be looking to mix in Pikes with Eagles? Or mix in some x-bows? Also, what kind of Siege would I need?

Also, does it make sense to go into a Drush - Eagles build, and abandon the Archers in Fuedal all together? I've never tried it and I'm not sure how it may work?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey Guys! I'm looking for a UK/Europe based group to play with semi-regularly-ish

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 07:40 AM PDT

Hey 👋 as the title says I'm looking for people to play AOE2 DE with so I can have some fun and get better at the game! I'm only 1000-1100 ELO rated I think.. but I'll happily play with anyone who can help me get better :)

I'm thinking about making a discord server if we get a little group going so that we can chat and sort out some games. Anyone is welcome even if youre not UK/Europe

We drastically need a better in-game waiting/lobby UX

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 09:01 PM PDT

It awesome that the community seems more vibrant than ever, but the whole multiplayer in-game lobby system is awful and a huge detriment to the community as well.

Looking at some of the issues with the current implementation

    • Lobbies can get perpetually frozen so you constantly see them but can't join
    • Lobby list doesn't update in real-time, and searching is a terrible experience
    • Lobbies don't always get listed
    • No list of players looking or playing
    • No way to chat with players who are online but not in-game (and not in your lobby)

The main improvement has been the matchmaking system which I think is great, but everything else is seriously lacking. Outside of the top 20-30 players, I don't think many people could list a player who isn't a friend, there are no "regulars" that you see online or clans you see frequently.

Both MSN Zone and Voobly (which was modeled after Zone) solved these problems pretty well. There were other problems with the way they built their lobby browser (aside from it being another piece of software outside of the game) but made the game much more social and community-driven IMO. Zone interface - source and voobly's interface

The inability to chat, or see other players who aren't just in your lobby but are online is drastically reducing the community building in game. Community seems to be an afterthought - and most of it feels as though its on Reddit, built around the top 20 players, or watching SotL videos.

https://aoe2.net/ has solved a lot of the lobby UX problems, but you still are missing the whole player and chat components.. as well as being a completely separate website.

I also have no idea what, if any clans exist or who to contact if I was interested in one. Of the top 200 listed players, theres maybe 4 clans with only 10 players with clan tags in their name.

Maybe gaming has changed so much that people don't want these sorts of features, but for me, its a regression and not a step forward.

How can I fight against Britons ans Ethiopians

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:45 PM PDT

Recently I played Ethiopians in Arena, and met Britons.

their long range xbow and arbs make my archer and S.O. So I used siege rams but it's too late.

    14 out of 16 cicero´s builds in 2 flowcharts

    14 out of 16 cicero´s builds in 2 flowcharts

Finally, I finished the flowcharts!!! They are based on the most voted version of them (v 3.0). The one with 5, is now the one with 7 builds (2 new... and it also has the 3 variations for Scouts)... and there´s a new one with 7 more.

I recommend using this with cicero´s build orders (they are in pdf and there´s a mod to practice 8 of them and 3 variations of scouts build). The complete cicero´s build orders are 16... the reason why I didn´t include the 16 is because Fire Galleys and Korean Towers build orders don´t have many things in common with the other builds, so it´s the same to learn them aside from this ones. If I put them later, they would be just to complete the 16 (and to be easier to follow), but it won´t have patterns in common to have fewer things to learn (at least not many patterns).

The next one will be a version of the 16 in 2 parts or maybe the 16 in one chart (I don´t know if this is possible or convenient, so just consider the first one)

The indications are at the bottom of each chart and... enjoy!!!

I fucking hate Saladin 2 so much

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:37 PM PDT

I'm convinced this level exists solely to torment us. Naturally you start out with a shit military, in a completely exposed position, with crap resources. There's a ton of sheep but good luck getting any of them thanks to all the goddamn trade carts ganking them.

Meanwhile, Teal harasses the shit out of you, and now thanks to Definitive Edition, he also goes Castle Age and starts spamming you with heavy horse and siege weapons, backed by xbows so pikes lose effectiveness. I noticed in particular that in the Definitive Edition, Teal is a lot more aggressive and defends a lot more effectively.

By the time your economy and military are in shape to start dealing with Teal, Blue is Imperial Age and starts landing Frank Paladins all over the place. And you can't do shit because you're locked to Castle Age. And Blue is of course chilling on an island protected by a navy you can't out-tech because you're stuck in Castle.

And the whole time, your useless "allies" sit there screeching at you to save their stupid trade carts.

Fuck this level with a spoon. It's totally do-able, it's just annoying and tedious because of the stupid arbitrary Castle Age restriction and low pop cap.

    Burmese Buff

    Posted: 08 Sep 2020 06:17 AM PDT

Arambai are a sick unit which do not benefit from or really need most upgrades. If you're making Arambai, you get free Lumber Mill upgrades, plus don't really need to build a Blacksmith or research the techs, effectively saving a good handful of resources.

However, this "effective savings" is not enough to get a very fast Castle Age, compared to other civs with Eco bonuses. Even against a civ with no Eco bonus, your speed will only be very slightly faster. Therefore the time it takes to build a Castle means you'll be overrun by harrass before you can do it. Saracens suffer this same problem. Mongols have a similar strategy but actually excel at it due to their great Eco bonus.

Unlike Saracens, Burmese have terrible options in other respects. Their Elephants are OK but simply not as good as Khmer. Their Archers aren't a thing due to lack of armor upgrades. They don't get Paladin or Siege Onager. Their monks are good but require a Monastery (running into the problem in previous paragraph), and aside from a one-time discount on researches, don't get any special bonus. Their infantry is good in Imperial Age but not as good as a dedicated infantry civ, and the +1 to attack in Feudal for MAA hardly matters much (Malian +1 Pierce Armor is much better for what you will use a MAA for). Finally, these small bonuses are spread out among so many buildings, instead of being concentrated, you can probably take advantage of only one per game, unlike S tier civs where all their bonuses always come into play.

These are my reasons, now here is my suggested buff to Burmese:

    - The first of every non-stone building that you make in a game builds 50% faster (whatever number is balanced, it's the idea).

This will enable them to get a faster Castle Age to pump out Arambai from the tech buildings and the eco bonus (something like an extra minute of gathering for 1 villager once per game from your initial Lumber Camp/Mill/Mining Camp), and makes their Monk rush actually a rush since the cost discount doesn't really increase speed. The drastic speed increase but limited to once per game is specifically designed to help with these. It also synergizes with their Lumber Camp tech bonus which will help them get the Wood fast enough to make use of it.
