Age of Advent, Week 2 Recap & Week 3 Announcement

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 05:30 PM PST

    Hello all!

There are only 10 more days of Age of Advent left!

...and I've only done one of the challenges over the past week.

Age of Advent is an advent calendar with randomized civilization/strategy pairings for you to try out. A new pairing opens every day, just like an actual advent calendar. The link is below if you want to try these out yourself!

    https://calendar.myadvent.net/?id=6615a158168bbccce57d8fe9cf43b006

Week 2 saw some interesting strategies, and in my opinion has some of the most difficult challenges of the whole calendar.

Day 8: Mongols, 1 TC all-in and not allowed to make additional Town Centers (I lost mine in a Team Game last night...)

    Day 9: Vietnamese, trash only

Day 10: Indians, Man-at-Arms all-in (no advancing to Castle, M@A only)

Day 11: Aztecs, fully upgraded Feudal scouts (no advancing to Castle Age. Did you know fully upgraded Eagle Scouts don't trade well with unupgraded Knights!?)

    Day 12: Italians, Hoang Rush

Day 13: Koreans, no Loom (you have to win the game without researching Loom)

Day 14: Goths, no Barracks units (so...Hoang Rush?)

Again, if you have any particularly interesting/funny/well-played games that you would like to have cast live, please feel free to message me directly. I don't mind casting them on my Twitch channel or for a YouTube upload.

With this many ridiculous strats, trying them out solo, against AI, or in team game matchups with your friends is also a ton of fun (and a good way to stay indoors and safe).

Week 3 is a mixture of typical game plans and...uh, fascinating tactical decisions, so be sure to give it a look if you're wanting something new to try!

    Glhf, everyone!

    Low ELO Tournaments?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 05:11 AM PST

So i am back in to AOE2 after a 20 year gap! My ELO is just under 1k, played 120 ranked games. Are there tournaments for low ELO players? If so, how do you join them?

    [1v1 STORY] SURPRISE VIKING KNIGHTS

    Matchup: 1v1 ARABIA ~ 1150 ELO

    me (Vikings) // opponent (Britons)

What are those thrilling moments that you realise that you actually get better and become more aware of the possibilities? Today I had one of those experiences. On the pro streams I often see, that they hide their production buildings inside their bases to surprise the enemy - and as I once learned on this subreddit: going off-meta is fun!

The Britons player went for a drush and was a lot of points ahead. But I could wall off the drush and had a beautiful gold in the back, unreachable for archers - that followed the milita. Despite heavy walling I could reach castle age quite fast due to the Viking eco power.

I went for two hidden stable kts productions - no bloodlines, yes, but I just rushed the armour upgrades, so they got kinda tanky aswell. I was able to surprise his feudal archers just in time before his x-bow upgrade hit. He was absolutely not expecting the cav approach. The double beneficial aspect: from now on he was afraid to move out and harass me - because he expected archer micro battles.

I went for small eco raids and pressured with a forward castle and skirms. His few pikes came in way to late. Point-wise he was always way ahead somehow - but he seemed to be so irritated, that he did not know what to do because I even went for Chevalier + skirms in Imperial.

He gg'ed and admitted, that he absolutely did not expect Viking kts, he was not prepared to fight of mobile units.

And the most satisfying thing about this game: I went for this strat on the fly and developed it out of the situation and the map... I just needed to share because I am so proud of this xD

What are your latest "I actually realized I got better now"-moments?

Some suggestions on how to improve hand cannons

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 04:33 AM PST

    Pick some of:

    • give them 2 armour vs anti-archer attacks

A FU Skirms deals 7 pierce + 4 anti-archer damage & FU Hand Cannons have 4 pierce armour, thus Skirms deal 7 damage, killing a Hand cannon in 5 shots. Adding 2 anti-archer armour to HCs would mean they take 5 damage and thus survive 7 shots.

    • Reduce the attack delay from 0.35 to 0.21

This would assist with micro. For comparison, here are some units with lower attack delays: Chu ko nu (0.21); Elite Jani (0; non elite jani, 0.4); scorpions & bombard cannons (0.21); mangos (0); all ships (0)

    • [Italians] allow Pavise (+1/1 armour) to effect HCs

    • [Indians] let Shatagni additionally grant +15% accuracy OR reduce the attack dispersion (spread) OR just make it give +2 range instead of +1

Do you have any ideas? (I was also considering just +1 or +2 damage, but idk)

How did you play AOE2 in the old days?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 07:49 AM PST

For the oldies/CD Originals among us, how did you play AOE as a child? I think a lot of the success of the game is the very different ways you can play, i.e. competetive RUSH RUSH RUSH, or very casual long games.

    For me, it was always:

    All techs on

    Explored

Never build a new TC - I already have one!

Build up an army of a 2 full formations of Paladins or Unique Units, backed up by about 20 Trebs before attacking

Wall & tower obsessively, often with "air lock" double gates, which I was very concerned about for some reason

    Rattan Archer flair?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:51 AM PST

I was gonna choose a flair for this sub, and my favourite unit is the Rattan archer. But I simply cannot find the flair for it. I chose the one i found to be closest to it, but to me it doesn't really look like the Rattan.

Anyone know if I'm just blind or is it misisng?

Anyone else feels like Archers and Knights are a bit too dominant in the meta?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 03:55 PM PST

It seems like in 9 out of 10 high level matches the best (non-Trash) unit choice is massing Archers or Knights, both in 1v1 and in 2v2.
It's so rare for a Unique Unit or the Militia line to be viable outside of the few civs that just have very strong UU (like mongols or spanish) or militia (like malians or goths)

I'm not saying they are useless units, they are all situational, it just feels like the requirements for them to become viable are a bit too specific currently. Like militia line is meant to be the trash counter, but they are really only better at this job than archers when the enemy is absolutely massing trash with little to no archers or siege units of their own, which is a very rare scenario. Being eagle counters is also a very limited civ specific use, and making 3-4 units for rush is also just a very smallscale usage of such a big unit type.

rare militia line also means even rarer militia counters like handcannoniers (which means nonexistent condottiero)

we could break down most unique units similarly, where you can't say that they are useless, but the requirements where they finally become a better choice than "just making more archers or knights" is usually a bit too specific, even more so than with the militia.

At least that's how I felt playing the game and watching the tournaments ever since DE was released, and I think this archer/knight oriented meta only became more dominant since then. What's your opinion tho? I think these units could definitely use some experimentations with buffs to "expand their roles".

    Performance issues with 1440p

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:47 AM PST

About a month ago I upgraded to a 144hz 1440p monitor. I was pretty excited to use the enhanced graphics pack, which looks great! But ever since getting the new monitor I have been experiencing stuttering even when fps is in the 80s. Makes it very difficult to play. I got a better graphics card but that didn't help at all and it didn't even improve fps. New card is roughly 50% faster. Also fps frequently drops to the 30s, sometimes lower. Specs are i7-2600k @ 4.4GHz, 24GB RAM, AMD R9 390 8GB. All CPU cores stay under 60% usage. And graphics card is in a similar range, around 55% with almost 4GB video memory used. Is this normal? No issues with any other game. I heard about performance issues with the new update which came out at about the the same time I got my monitor. Could that be it? Or do I just need a beast of a pc to play this game at 1440p with the graphics pack? Thanks!

Why bother make any siege but trebuchets vs castles?

    Posted: 14 Dec 2020 10:51 PM PST

(1100 elo) Why do people make siege rams? Does the cost to upgrade, number of them you have to have, and vulnerability not just make trebs the better option?

I understand mangos are amazing vs TC and archers in Castle age, and scorps are anti infantry, but I don't get why the investment into seige ram is justified when you can safely treb a castle from a distance with zero damage taken?

Seige rams have to reach the castle which makes them vulnerable to melee
