    Crashed for all players

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 03:43 AM PST

    Playing a multiplayer game with my friends online and the game crashed to windows for all of us at once. Anyone else seen this?

    We had no lag or any issues before this happened.

    Pre-Mill Drush Flush Build Order

    Let me see your O face

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:15 AM PST

    What was the use case for the swordsman line in the original game?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 04:12 PM PST

    By original game I mean both AoK and AoC as envisioned and balanced by the developers.

    In AoK, the swordsman line had no base pierce armor. This meant that skirms countered men-at-arms in feudal age (part of what led to the full skirm meta). Spearmen actually did just as well against skirms, with their speed, and the lesser bonus damage of skirms against them.

    In AoC, the swordsman line got +1 PA, but archery range units got thumb ring and stable units got bloodlines. Also, scouts got +2 attack in feudal. Scouts and archers now made sense in feudal, but M@A were still a niche unit.

    In Castle Age, Longswordsmen are slower than knights but don't even trade well in an equal resources fight (even with supplies, let alone without). They die to crossbowmen, CA, knights, and scorpions, (and Eskirms in AoK), and they can't even raid like knights can. They only counter pikemen (which archers and skirms do better) and eagle warriors (which didn't exist in AoK).

    In Imperial Age, Champions could make sense but even now with supplies they still have weaknesses that make other units more desirable most of the time.

    In addition to all this, the 75-pop limit of the original game meant that more expensive pop-efficient units (like knights) were much more viable long-term.

    Was the swordsman line so underpowered in AoE2 because it was too good in AoE1?

    Age of Empires 1997 Intro Remastered in 4k!

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 11:57 PM PST

    I play my best with civs that have an early economic bonus (vikings, cents, teutons,) How do I change my playstyle for civs that don't have these bonuses?

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 07:39 AM PST

    The Tatar Sheep bonus, what is it and how good is it. Please tell me any obv mistakes.

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:17 PM PST

    Just jotting down my thoughts so that I can start planing my Build order. Please point out any obvious mistakes.

    The main focus is currently only on the +50% longer lasting rate and the 2 sheeps that spawn in feudal.

    The sheeps that spawn with the additional tcs are a bit much for one post to analyze.

    The stats I will use:https://imgur.com/a/3SJDex6

    They assume the sheeps are directly under the tc.

    Gold mines are an avrage of 1.5 tiles away

    Lumber is an average of 3 tiles away.

    Farms are right next to tc.

    The Stats I either got from math/experiments/the wiki or stolen from one of the thousands of Spirit of the law videos:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y75RpYhXKUM

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0P-KbjPWFYY

    1. First Step. How much more food/longer can they gather from the sheep?

    The first sheep gives 126 food.

    All the other sheeps should give you about 130 food depending on the vill bumps between sheep changes.

    A normal sheep gives about 89 food.

    So thats about a 40 food improvement per sheep. So 40*8 Sheep + 2 Feudal sheeps * 130 eq= 580 Food.

    2. So Tatars get 580 Bonus food for free?

    Not excatly, its more of a very favorable trade/loan. Instead of building farms they get to ignore farms for the first 15 minutes of the game.

    And the not building farms turns into a 360-480 wood bonus that slowly disappears as you need to add farms yourself, just 5 minutes later.

    A non-upgraded farm lasts for about 10 minutes and one with horse collar for about 14 minutes.

    If your opponent has gottten horse collar before setting down any farms your bonus will disappear for up to 9-11 minutes depending on opposing civs as both of you will have paid for the same number of farms.

    But with 420 additional wood between the 10-15 minute mark you can do some crazy stuff like building 3 stables and then just overwhelming your opponent with scouts.

    Or you could go for a 4 tc Boom off 25 vills. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YQxBMQIxGM

    Just remember you will have to pay the farm debt sooner or later as the sheep don't last forever.

    3 Comparison to other civ Bonuses

    3.1 Saracen

    Similar to the Tatars, Saracen can just not build farms and still get a good deal on food.

    The Saracen Market allows 3 Trades of gold->food before it becomes equal to farming sheep. As the first 2 trades were better, saracen could go for a total of 5 trades and be equal in resources to Tatars.

    100 food/wood -> 105 gold

    100 food/wood -> 107 gold

    100 food/wood -> 109 gold

    100 food/wood -> 111 gold

    100 food/wood -> 113 gold

    Before the additional TCs are dropped, Saracen have the way better/flexible eco bonus.

    Selling stone and mining upgrades are also a thing.

    3.2 Britons

    Get actually more resources from sheep and not a loan which needs to be payed back fast.

    And when the Tcs are dropped they actually get to keep the wood savings.

    TLDR: Its a short term extreme Wood bonus that almost stops existing after 15 minutes and any build needs to abuse that window.

    But it is probably the biggest wood bonus in the game at 10-12 minutes.

    And when you go for fast tcs it allows you some way too strong booming as every tc gives you a 300 wood loan for 125 seconds.

    best trash late game 1v1 civs

    Posted: 12 Dec 2020 06:13 AM PST

    Scenario (low elo 800 ish )recently had 3 games fairly similar 1hr+ (i won by not spending gold till late game) , clearing all gold/stone resources, almost clearing trees, I've been playing defensive (i.e. losing early game) with Vikings vs ( Franks, Bulgarians, Aztecs ) and 30min + hiding castles in furthest corners and slowly wittling down opponents Gold reserves,. Its usually a Trash war (Skirms,Halbs,Hussar + Trebs ) with 50/50 splits of the map... I feel like Byzantines would be a better pick or Japanese cause i get caught out with their Unique Units... What civ would you most want for trash war???

    Pocket player in AOE 2 HD

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 09:35 PM PST

    Hello everyone,

    I usually play vs AI. Recently I started playing 4v4 vs AI, but every time I become the flank player. No matter what colour I choose I am always the flank player. I know that in DE it is based on colour but that is not the case in HD. Any idea how to become the pocket player?

    Low Elo player groups?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 04:52 PM PST

    Are there any true noob discord groups interested in playing some casual teamgames? I'm hovering at around 860 elo 1v1 and I don't know anyone that plays the game and it seems like everyone here is a much higher elo than that.

    Any other noobs out here looking to play some teamgames?

    I can't win as Celts anymore :(

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 11:33 PM PST

    I used to love doing a drush FC with Celts (at 1.2k-1.4k elo), but since the patch I can no longer pull it off successfully. Getting rid of the Celts' speed bonus in dark age has (at least for me) been a catostrophic Nerf. In the past I would kill around 1 vil on average, but now that their militia move at normal speed I rarely do any damage, beyond forcing a bit of idle time.

    I get why the nerf was necessary. Without it the Celts would be hella OP due to the palisade nerf. But I feel like it was too drastic, moving the Celts from being an S\A tier civ to being B or C tier. Because who the fuck cares about fast moving infintry in feudal? It's basically like free Squires, which is a nearly worthless bonus.

    Maybe I'm wrong and Celts will remain in the top 5 for win rate. Are there any stats on winrates post-patch yet?

    How to improve against AI

    Posted: 11 Dec 2020 07:05 PM PST

    Hey guys, I've been playing semi frequently for about a year now. I played the game a lot between the ages of 6-10 but I never really knew what I was doing.

    I've picked it up lately and I'm absolutely loving it, I enjoy watching competitive and I've binged the entire playlist of videos from the likes of Spirit of the Law t90, etc...

    I consider myself to have a fairly avid knowledge of the game. I know it counters, I know basic flexible build orders that get me to feudal at times of 11 mins at the longest, and I'm starting to be comfortable with hot keys and attack tactics.

    I can consistently beat Moderate AI with a score of 35k + with a boom strategy, but I only win about half of my hard mode games, despite being on par or even beyond the level of my opponent.

    I play 4 on 4 last man standing games. I play random civs and always make sure to play to the strengths of my civs. I always engage in trade at imperial age when I'm running low on gold deposits. I usually have a villager pop of 110, and focus on my macro early.

    I used to think I was pretty ok. I don't have a computer capable of competitive play, apparently, so I've never been able to test / measure my elo, so I just assumed I was around average.

    I've since been reading that before people should even consider hitting online, they should be able to consistently beat extreme ai, which I am not even close to being capable of. So that was a pretty hard hit to my ego, and quite humbling.

    So, I've realised I had to learn. Improve on my weaknesses. It seemed clear to me that my issue was a lack of early aggression. So I tried focusing more on military early on, but it only proved to harm me.

    I was hoping you fine ladies and gentlemen could help a fella out? I really want to improve, and I really want to engage with this community more. However, before I can engage with the community, I feel I need to be better, so that my contributions can be valid.

    So, end of the day, what am I doing wrong? Is there a key component of gameplay I'm completely missing? Is it just a matter of practicing what I'm already doing to get better at it? Or is my play style inherently flawed?

    Thanks so much in advance !

    Introducing: Community game Sundays!

    https://preview.redd.it/g77kkdhkrl461.png?width=802&format=png&auto=webp&s=654d637c21e228ecaa5bd1aa2e67b2250f2517de

    Good evening, AOE2 community! I have been streaming for 4-5 months, and my stream consists of probably 90% casting and 10% of my own gameplay (1300's 1v1 ranked). Through my casting, I have already received tremendous support, and I want to extend my gratitude to the community by trying to start a new, recurring event: Community game Sundays!

    For my casting, I generally limit myself to the low/mid-range of 1v1 ELO, ranging from 1000-1800 ELO. With the community games, my aim will be that it can accommodate anyone, since we might be doing wacky game modes like "King of the Hill", "Sudden Death", "Roll the dice", "Exploding villagers" etc. I would mainly be casting those games on my stream, but also hop in to play on occasion, maybe at the start of the stream, to get things rolling.

    Feel free to join my Discord as well, to get notifications about live times and updates on community games: https://discord.gg/jnWP4jh3kS

    I hope to see you around already on Sunday the 20th, which will be the first session. :)

    If you want a sample of my casting or gameplay, you will find me at twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/akkalno
    and Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCRp6FSTaR_FfERsZLNLBNPw
