Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 12: Sicilians vs Slavs

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:05 PM PDT

Our first week with the Sicilians!... oh boy... 11

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Huns vs Malay, and next up is the Sicilians vs Slavs!

    Sicilians: Infantry civilization

    • Castles and Town Centers built +100% faster
    • Land military units (except siege) receive -50% bonus damage
    • Farm upgrades provide +100% additional food
    • Can build Donjon in Feudal Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Transport Ships +5 carry capacity; +10 anti-ship armor
    • Unique Unit: Serjeant (Heavy infantry that can build Donjon)
    • Unique Building: Donjon (Powerful tower that can train Serjeants)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: First Crusade (Each TC (max. 5) spawns a one-time batch of 7 Serjeants)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Scutage (Each team member receives 15g per military unit they own)

    Slavs: Infantry and Siege civilization

    • Farmers work +10% faster
    • Supplies free
    • Siege Workshop units cost -15%
    • TEAM BONUS: Military buildings provide +5 pop space
    • Unique Unit: Boyar (Heavily armored cavalry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Orthodoxy (Monks +3/+3 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Druzhina (Infantry deal 5 trample damage)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, let's see what we've got here. For 1v1 Arabia, Slavs are usually considered to be fairly strong, if not quite top-tier. Their excellent eco, infantry, cav, and siege are only hampered by their mediocre archers. Sicilians, meanwhile, are still a somewhat unknown quantity. They do pretty much everything decently, but do not excel in any one area. Their bonus damage reduction is quite handy though. What do you guys think?
    • Similarly, on closed maps, Slavs are generally seen as a very powerful pick. They have a fantastic boom, as well as a deadly late game army of infantry and siege, or maybe even Boyars! Sicilians are pretty resilient and can spam lots of Donjons, but would appear to lack any real power unit. How do you see this one going?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Magyars vs Vietnamese. Hope to see you there! :)

Idea about Frank and Burgundy Berry bonus

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:51 PM PDT

So right now, Frank is a top civ while Burgundy is a bottom civ. Both civ is famous for wine so a Berry bonus seems appropriate for both of them.

I propose Frank lose the "Berry Gather +% faster" in exchange of a "Berry contain %more food" and Burgundy gets the "Berry Gather +% faster".

Berry contain more food syngeries with Frank's free mill as it means you can delay your farms for a while. Burgundy needs an eco boost to utilize their age early upgrade bonus.

The end result will be Frank will be less dominant in dark and early feudal. Burgundy gets a useful eco bonus.

Tl;dr remove frank Berry gather bonus. Give Frank Berry contain more food. Give Burgundy Berry gather bonus.

Historically speaking, which civs were the worst ones to have been included in this game?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 02:59 AM PDT

Ignore gameplay/mechanics. Ignore sentimental attachment. What just doesn't make sense?

I would consider the Byzantine Empire to be one of the best. A large and hugely influential empire in existence from the dark ages onwards. Moreover, the fall of Constantinople in 1453 has often been used as an end date for the middle ages in Europe.

I consider Celts to be one of the worst, and I'm Irish! Ireland and Scotland were small, underdeveloped and fractured societies struggling to maintain independence on the edge of Europe. They never conquered anybody and woad raiders belong in a game with Julius Caesar. I think their inclusion as a civ is because of Braveheart and trying to appeal to an audience in the USA.

What do you guys think? What are your worst civs historically speaking?

New custom Campaign for DE: Dandolo

New custom Campaign for DE: Dandolo

I have good news for anyone who likes to play single player campaigns and custom scenarios.

My Dandolo campaign (originally released in 2019 for the old HD version of Aoe2) is now available for the Definitive Edition! The campaign has been heavily revised for the DE and supplemented with many new extras and features.

    https://preview.redd.it/zcwwcasigdq61.jpg?width=1366&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe028baec1ae617f4e212d78cbf3d155e1e5532b

    Link: https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/21927/

"Dandolo" is a 5-part campaign that focuses on Venice and its legendary and cunning leader Enrico Dandolo. The story of the campaign tells the eventful life of Enrico Dandolo before and during the infamous fourth crusade. Visit the most beautiful cities of the Adriatic. Experience Venice's conflicts with its rivals Pisa, Genoa and Byzantium and gather more gold and treasures than you could have ever imagined. Viva San Marco!

    Features:

    *5 nicely designed single-player scenarios.

*Campaign is fully voiced with sound effects and intro/outro cinematics.

*An epic story that tells one of the most exciting episodes of the time of the Crusades.

*New unique technologies and gameplay twists.

*Three Levels of Difficulty- The campaign is designed to appeal to both veterans and less experienced players.

To download the campaign select mods in your Aoe2 DE main menu. Search for "Dandolo" and then click on "subscribe". Restart your game so that all sound files work properly. Keep in mind, that due to the many new media files, download may take some time. Uses Lords of the West DLC.

Changes to the 2019 Aoe2 HD version:

This version is very different from the campaign released for the HD version in 2019. Even though I got a lot of positive feedback from players for Dandolo back then, I still wanted to add some improvements made possible by the powerful DE Scenario Editor: Voicelines, sound effects and the intro/outro- cinematics are completely overhauled. Gameplay and balancing were reworked. Added some new stuff to the maps.

Another employee's perspective on Ensemble Studios and AoE2's code base

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:02 AM PDT

Recently there has been some talk about the historic development of our game due to a new interview with former lead designer Sandy Peterson. Another person who has worked at Ensemble from somewhere in the 2000's till the end of Halo Wars is Richard Geldreich. He had already tweeted a few times about his experience at Ensemble, which he characterized as the best game development experience he's had.

However, he's more critical than Sandy about other things. He recently wrote a thread calling out the former management for spending on the MMO, and in retrospect agrees with Microsoft shutting Ensemble down due to that. He also claims that the Age1 and Age2 code bases are among the cleanest he's come across, and also states that he's seen Age1's code "be taken over by a new team and turned into total shit over time". Let's hope that wasn't Forgotten Empires (Geldreich has made some contributions to AOE:DE).

Insane fps drops in 50% of my team games

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:30 AM PDT

In around half of my games i experience some insane fps drops. They begin when more units are on the map but then they come and go. So sometimes for like 30 seconds i have 1fps and then it goes back to normal for a couple of minutes before it comes back again.

These fps drops are worse when playing with more people in the game. But in some games (even 4v4) they don't appear at all.

I did a memtest and it came out with no errors.

I had a brand new 6800 XT and because it was faulty i got a new one. The fps drops were present with both the cards.

I installed it on a new NVME SSD and i have no problems with other programs/games on the SSD. AoE2 DE is the only program at all which causes me problems.

What might the issue be here?

Building destruction animations are great, but Castle destruction animations specifically have been a huge deal for me

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:36 AM PDT

When it comes to most games, I agree gameplay is the most important thing, and that's the case for AoE2 as well; but presentation can significantly increase how good a game 'feels', even if the gameplay hasn't changed. And I think that Castle destruction animations have been particularly important in that regard.

I think I came to feel this way about castles while watching Hidden Cup; Castle sieges are often so epic, and having a crucial castle get taken down is such a big moment that having this LUXURIOUS animation for its destruction really puts an exclamation mark on the significance of what just happened, in a way that I didn't feel the earlier editions conveyed.

It not only makes it more satisfying as a player, to take down an enemy castle, but also makes it more entertaining as a spectator too; since you get to enjoy these sights without worrying about actually playing the game in the heat of the moment.

AoE2 DE is like, peak 2d art (yeah I know it's prerendered 3d, but you know what I mean). It looks better than many modern 3d RTS games (and that unfortunately includes AoE4, at least from what I've seen). I'm sure that the Definitive Edition's gorgeous presentation is responsible in no small part for this new golden age of AoE2.

(side note; I do wish that Hidden Cup would use some of the DE's post-processing effects, because it just looks so gorgeous and I want people watching for the first time to be blown away by how stunning the DE looks :P )

Increasing the length between Ages (AoE 2)

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:51 AM PDT

Are there any mods out there that increase the requirements to advance to the next age? I feel like the time spent in the earlier ages is so brief, and I'd like to experience the ages more. I think it would be fun to have more battles in the dark and feudal ages.

I know you can set a maximum age, but I don't want the game to never get past that point, just to have more events during those ages.

I downloaded Advanced Genie Editor and found the values for the Age requirements. Changing the amount of resources works, but if I change the amount of required techs (i.e. 2 Dark Age buildings to 4) the game doesn't like it and never allows anyone to advance to Feudal. Same if I try to create any other requirements.

I also can't find where for Imperial age it you can make certain structures (2 Castle Age or a Castle).

Lastly, in AGE, it seems that Castle Age is named Middle Age, but Feudal and Middle got switched around because the requirements for Middle Age are the same as Feudal in game, and Feudal are the same as Castle in game.

    Any thoughts? Suggestions? Tips?

    Thanks.

What's the best thing to do on a Drush: Kill a villager or distract your oponent?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:49 PM PDT

Well, the title is pretty much the question. I'm practicing my drushs and most of the time I go to kill a villager, but for that almost all the time my Militias die in the process (at least 2 of them for sure).

So... this is the question: whats the better thing to do? Go for a villager kill or stay in the enemies base until they die (even if you don't kill anything).

    Anyone like custom maps?

    Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:14 PM PDT

I made a feitoria nothing map where each player starts with 10 feitorias because eco is hard!

I just updated the map to 8 players and thought posting here might improve visibility:

    Rio's feitoria nothing (8p)

Max pop is 200 but you start with (only) 10 feitorias and 4 villagers, so you have to build housing and delete feitorias to build an army (unless you're the huns, still have to delete feitorias).

Each base has 1 relic and 8 relics in the center (16 total) but other than that there are no resources on the map, so you better protect (most) of your feitorias.

I'm currently hosting a game and will try to spread it around. Tell T90

What’s the best civ for a new player?

    Posted: 31 Mar 2021 08:13 AM PDT

Hi, I'm a new player who just got aoe2 yesterday. I was wondering which civ is the best for a new player learning the basics, I've been trying out every civ and seeing which ones I like, so far it's the Spanish, if you have any idea on what would be a good civ for a new player please comment.

I am usually a Bulgarian/Vietnamese/Malay player but tonight I decided to give the Franks a go because why not...anyway I won the game but I noticed they don't have hussar but have a cavalry hit point bonus.

I was wondering how much difference it makes to use the Frankish light cav vs hussars?
