Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 12: Sicilians vs Slavs Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:05 PM PDT Our first week with the Sicilians!... oh boy... 11 Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Huns vs Malay, and next up is the Sicilians vs Slavs! Sicilians:
Slavs: Infantry and Siege civilization
Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!
Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Magyars vs Vietnamese. Hope to see you there! :) [link] [comments]

Idea about Frank and Burgundy Berry bonus Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:51 PM PDT So right now, Frank is a top civ while Burgundy is a bottom civ. Both civ is famous for wine so a Berry bonus seems appropriate for both of them. I propose Frank lose the "Berry Gather +% faster" in exchange of a "Berry contain %more food" and Burgundy gets the "Berry Gather +% faster". Berry contain more food syngeries with Frank's free mill as it means you can delay your farms for a while. Burgundy needs an eco boost to utilize their age early upgrade bonus. The end result will be Frank will be less dominant in dark and early feudal. Burgundy gets a useful eco bonus. Tl;dr remove frank Berry gather bonus. Give Frank Berry contain more food. Give Burgundy Berry gather bonus. [link] [comments]

Historically speaking, which civs were the worst ones to have been included in this game? Posted: 31 Mar 2021 02:59 AM PDT Ignore gameplay/mechanics. Ignore sentimental attachment. What just doesn't make sense? I would consider the Byzantine Empire to be one of the best. A large and hugely influential empire in existence from the dark ages onwards. Moreover, the fall of Constantinople in 1453 has often been used as an end date for the middle ages in Europe. I consider Celts to be one of the worst, and I'm Irish! Ireland and Scotland were small, underdeveloped and fractured societies struggling to maintain independence on the edge of Europe. They never conquered anybody and woad raiders belong in a game with Julius Caesar. I think their inclusion as a civ is because of Braveheart and trying to appeal to an audience in the USA. What do you guys think? What are your worst civs historically speaking? [link] [comments]

Another employee's perspective on Ensemble Studios and AoE2's code base Posted: 31 Mar 2021 01:02 AM PDT Recently there has been some talk about the historic development of our game due to a new interview with former lead designer Sandy Peterson. Another person who has worked at Ensemble from somewhere in the 2000's till the end of Halo Wars is Richard Geldreich. He had already tweeted a few times about his experience at Ensemble, which he characterized as the best game development experience he's had. However, he's more critical than Sandy about other things. He recently wrote a thread calling out the former management for spending on the MMO, and in retrospect agrees with Microsoft shutting Ensemble down due to that. He also claims that the Age1 and Age2 code bases are among the cleanest he's come across, and also states that he's seen Age1's code "be taken over by a new team and turned into total shit over time". Let's hope that wasn't Forgotten Empires (Geldreich has made some contributions to AOE:DE). [link] [comments]

Insane fps drops in 50% of my team games Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:30 AM PDT In around half of my games i experience some insane fps drops. They begin when more units are on the map but then they come and go. So sometimes for like 30 seconds i have 1fps and then it goes back to normal for a couple of minutes before it comes back again. These fps drops are worse when playing with more people in the game. But in some games (even 4v4) they don't appear at all. I did a memtest and it came out with no errors. I had a brand new 6800 XT and because it was faulty i got a new one. The fps drops were present with both the cards. I installed it on a new NVME SSD and i have no problems with other programs/games on the SSD. AoE2 DE is the only program at all which causes me problems. What might the issue be here? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:36 AM PDT When it comes to most games, I agree gameplay is the most important thing, and that's the case for AoE2 as well; but presentation can significantly increase how good a game 'feels', even if the gameplay hasn't changed. And I think that Castle destruction animations have been particularly important in that regard. I think I came to feel this way about castles while watching Hidden Cup; Castle sieges are often so epic, and having a crucial castle get taken down is such a big moment that having this LUXURIOUS animation for its destruction really puts an exclamation mark on the significance of what just happened, in a way that I didn't feel the earlier editions conveyed. It not only makes it more satisfying as a player, to take down an enemy castle, but also makes it more entertaining as a spectator too; since you get to enjoy these sights without worrying about actually playing the game in the heat of the moment. AoE2 DE is like, peak 2d art (yeah I know it's prerendered 3d, but you know what I mean). It looks better than many modern 3d RTS games (and that unfortunately includes AoE4, at least from what I've seen). I'm sure that the Definitive Edition's gorgeous presentation is responsible in no small part for this new golden age of AoE2. (side note; I do wish that Hidden Cup would use some of the DE's post-processing effects, because it just looks so gorgeous and I want people watching for the first time to be blown away by how stunning the DE looks :P ) [link] [comments]

Increasing the length between Ages (AoE 2) Posted: 31 Mar 2021 06:51 AM PDT Are there any mods out there that increase the requirements to advance to the next age? I feel like the time spent in the earlier ages is so brief, and I'd like to experience the ages more. I think it would be fun to have more battles in the dark and feudal ages. I know you can set a maximum age, but I don't want the game to never get past that point, just to have more events during those ages. I downloaded Advanced Genie Editor and found the values for the Age requirements. Changing the amount of resources works, but if I change the amount of required techs (i.e. 2 Dark Age buildings to 4) the game doesn't like it and never allows anyone to advance to Feudal. Same if I try to create any other requirements. I also can't find where for Imperial age it you can make certain structures (2 Castle Age or a Castle). Lastly, in AGE, it seems that Castle Age is named Middle Age, but Feudal and Middle got switched around because the requirements for Middle Age are the same as Feudal in game, and Feudal are the same as Castle in game. Any thoughts? Suggestions? Tips? Thanks. [link] [comments]
What's the best thing to do on a Drush: Kill a villager or distract your oponent? Posted: 30 Mar 2021 07:49 PM PDT Well, the title is pretty much the question. I'm practicing my drushs and most of the time I go to kill a villager, but for that almost all the time my Militias die in the process (at least 2 of them for sure). So... this is the question: whats the better thing to do? Go for a villager kill or stay in the enemies base until they die (even if you don't kill anything). [link] [comments]
Posted: 30 Mar 2021 10:14 PM PDT I made a feitoria nothing map where each player starts with 10 feitorias because eco is hard! I just updated the map to 8 players and thought posting here might improve visibility: Rio's feitoria nothing (8p) Max pop is 200 but you start with (only) 10 feitorias and 4 villagers, so you have to build housing and delete feitorias to build an army (unless you're the huns, still have to delete feitorias). Each base has 1 relic and 8 relics in the center (16 total) but other than that there are no resources on the map, so you better protect (most) of your feitorias. I'm currently hosting a game and will try to spread it around. Tell T90 [link] [comments]
What’s the best civ for a new player? Posted: 31 Mar 2021 08:13 AM PDT Hi, I'm a new player who just got aoe2 yesterday. I was wondering which civ is the best for a new player learning the basics, I've been trying out every civ and seeing which ones I like, so far it's the Spanish, if you have any idea on what would be a good civ for a new player please comment. Frankish Light cav vs generic Hussar. Posted: 31 Mar 2021 08:03 AM PDT I am usually a Bulgarian/Vietnamese/Malay player but tonight I decided to give the Franks a go because why not...anyway I won the game but I noticed they don't have hussar but have a cavalry hit point bonus. I was wondering how much difference it makes to use the Frankish light cav vs hussars? [link] [comments]
Posted: 31 Mar 2021 07:59 AM PDT So I'm debating on purchasing the Definitive edition. My PC is a borderline potato. Can you reduce the graphical settings to the original version? [link] [comments] |
