Why did they get rid of mixed difficulty AI?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 02:10 AM PDT

Just the title really. Did I imagine that? I'm sure you could face, for example two Standard and a Hard if you wanted. I play with my...let's say very mixed ability friends, and we struggle to find the right balance against the AI to have a balanced game. Moderate is too easy for me even if we're massively outnumbered, and facing Hard is either very easy if I can rush one of them down or very difficult if I can't rush one of them down and get 2v1'd while my mates are still struggling up to Feudal. It surely can't be that hard to implement. I think letting us mix would help a lot! End up with a more rewarding game that becomes a set of smaller 1v1s.

Ranked Wonder Proposal: Wonders Generate Gold

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 06:29 AM PDT

So wonders do basically nothing in ranked games since they're on conquest mode and most people playing online play exclusively ranked games. So wonders is definitely not something we see in ranked games, ladder and even pro streams.

But they're already implemented, they're super cool buildings unique to every civ! I propose they're given some use since the last time I saw a wonder being built was in a casual game where the opponent decided to stall hiding vills so I just built a wonder and went off to have lunch.

What if a wonder generated 3 relics worth of gold in ranked games instead of being a winning condition. This makes the wonder a long term investment that generates gold and pays for itself in 666 ingame seconds which is about 6.5 real time minutes, comparable, albeit proably less cost-effective, to gathering relics or setting up trade routes. And so they're made viable both in 1v1 and TGs, where all players will want to have their wonder up as post imperial draws near and gold becomes scarce.

    Incas Analysis

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:26 AM PDT

Hello. I wanted to look at the Incas civ to see how good they are played outside of a tower rush, considering the upcoming nerf to it. In my opinion they are best suited for the common mass archers/crossbows in Feudal/early Castle, then diversifying into what they need to counter their enemy after that, of which they have great options.

    Dark Age

Free Llama, difficult to quantify but this is basically a QoL bonus. You aren't gathering from it any faster. It probably saves you a second or two of micro to know exactly where your first sheep is, and guards against not finding enough sheep. I'll call it 1 food from time, and half a farm worth of food = 30 wood.

2x pop on houses saves you say 3 houses x 25 wood = 75 wood

Build time of houses is 25 seconds so 1 villager that could be eating sheep or berries is gathering an extra 4 food per house, so 12 food

    Feudal Age

7.5 seconds of build time on farms = 3 food every time you have to remake. So 30 food for your first 10 farms.

House savings for an additional 3 houses = 75 wood and 15 food (using food gather rate for farming now)

    Castle Age

Reseeding your original 10 farms + making 25 more = another 105 food

House savings for an additional 5 houses = 125 wood and 25 food

30 stone from your first two TCs

    Imperial Age

Reseeding your original 35 farms twice + making 35 more = another 315 food

House savings for an additional 5 houses = 125 wood and 25 food

97.5 Stone from your first castle

    Total

    • 1+12+30+15 = 58 food by reaching Castle Age
    • 30+75+75 = 180 wood by reaching Castle Age

    • 1+12+30+15+105+25 = 188 food by mid/late Castle Age
    • 30+75+75+125 = 305 wood by mid/late Castle Age
    • 30 = 30 stone by mid/late Castle Age

    • 1+12+30+15+105+25+315+25 = 528 food by early Imperial Age
    • 30+75+75+125+125 = 430 wood by early Imperial Age
    • 30+97.5 = 127.5 stone by early Imperial Age

    Conclusion

When you add it all up by the end of the game, it equates to basically a "real" eco bonus. The problem is that the biggest bulk of it comes when you are doing your final farm and house boom and the tempo of the game may be decided by then. The bonuses are miniscule during Dark+Feudal+early Castle age. Compared to a civ which gets a free line of upgrades (farm upgrades, melee attack upgrades, etc) or a gather rate bonus, they are going to fall behind. This may make them an effective civ on closed maps and team games, but low tier on open maps in 1v1 games. With how effective Kamayuks are en masse, this may be fine.

It is interesting to note that ALL of their bonuses are economic, if you take away the Villager Blacksmith upgrades - so if their economy is worse than another civ, it's clear to see they have no other advantage until Unique Units come into play in Castle. For example, against the Britons or Mongols, who have a stronger early Eco and a military bonus which helps starting in Feudal Age, Incas are strictly worse until they reach Castle Age. Even Saracens have things like selling Stone for a quick Gold boost in Feudal, and an archer bonus against buildings, however laughable bonus it may be, it is still a military bonus. Incas have literally no advantage over many civs until Castle Age.

This "base" of a boosted economy would probably become broken if you added another economic bonus, but they could deserve some sort of military bonus to help them survive Feudal. Andean Sling is fairly useless IMO as well and giving them a real Castle Age Unique Tech could make them a more fun and powerful civ on closed maps.

What are people's favourite games they have watched?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 01:10 AM PDT

I've been watching a lot of T90 and others on YouTube, and it made me wonder if I'm missing any particularly good games, as I've only gotten into watching aoe2 fairly recently.

2 of my faves are the first Fatslob game T90 posted:

and this super low Elo game:

Would love to see an Eco Efficiency stat

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 06:29 PM PDT

Basically I'm thinking total gathered resources/total villager minutes. It would be an interesting economic stat to see in combination with idle TC time and idle villager time. It would be a good performance metric for keeping one's vils on task.

Thematic Change to Mongols(Change to their UT: Nomads)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 03:20 AM PDT

Their UT in the Castle Age, Nomad(s), allows them to lose houses without losing population cap. It only really helps for raids, I guess. No one really uses it to make a house, and then delete them all so they have more base space. I think we might be able to keep the same effect and add on this new one, or delete the the current effect and replace it; either way, I'd be happy. Anyways....

    1. UT: Nomads: Allows houses to be built significantly faster and/or decreases price by a significant amount. If it wouldn't make things OP, keep the original effect as well.

Also, I'm not talking like building in half the time, but more like a 1/5. And at 1/2 price? No, more like maybe 1/5 the price. Or both. For extra saucey-ness, also changes all houses to yurts, which are thematically more in tune with the spirit of the Mongols.

If we can't keep the old UT, this one at least has potential as being better because you can build a house in 5 seconds, and also spend a measly 5 wood to do so. Numbers can be tweaked as needed, for balance reasons. But this also improves house walls, and still allows them to lose a lot of houses in a base raid and rebuild better; while the old UT was perfect for this, it stands to reason this one is a bit stronger, due to being better as kind of an anti-housed bonus, like Incas or Huns.

This is kind of like that old buff where Mongols got Steppe Lancers, because it was thematically PERFECT, IMO, to do that. Hit the nail on the head. And I think this change would slap too. Might be boasting a bit though.

EDIT: Or maybe even make this one or the original UT a new Civ bonus and make a new Castle Age UT that actually DOES something, incase this one is STILL underpowered.

AOE 2: DE and it's playerbase.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2021 05:21 AM PDT

    Hello everyone!

English isn't my first language, so sorry for any mistakes and errors. I bought AOE 2 a few days ago, last time i've played thos series was when i was a kid and i had a Gold Edition of AOE 1 & 2. Im trying my best to learn how to play this game and I'm pretty enjoying this game, but there is one problem for me: smurfers & tryhards.

For example: someone sets up a lobby with a title like "3 vs 3 noob game" Im thinking "okay, im a noob, i can go there and have fun with people on my lvl". Then someone with waaaay higher skill joins, often from second account, take some Cumans/Japanese/other OP meta civ at the time and stomps all of us (even alone) in team games. It's pretty frustrating, because I can't enjoy game, when someone with better micro, game knowledge and tactics swoop through a map like Four Riders of Apocalypse. Some of you may say "git gud". Ok, I'll try, but getting stomped all time (while I'm making some progress) don't tease me to learn more about the game in which im always losing cause of a lack of expirience to a guys with alot of it in a games that they should not have played in a first place. It's the most whiny thing that I made on a Internet, but Im pissed off after another lost match 3 vs 3 when we in 3 tried to fight with Japanese vet rushing towers. Alone.

Just please, play with people on (+/-)your ELO and try to not ruin expirience for new players. Peace out.

Tl;drIm bad at AOE 2, and I'm getting stomped by vets on a lobbies created for newbies and I'm frustrated by that.

    Topics:

-Are showmatches or tournaments better, when should they each be used?

-Are tournaments focussed too much on casters instead of players?

-Do tournaments focus too much on the top 16 players?

-Do we need to do more for players outside the top 16?

    Civs for Boom + Adapting

    Posted: 28 Apr 2021 05:25 PM PDT

    Hi All,

I'm a new player who's mostly been playing lots of early cavalry aggression with Magyars, and it's time for me to start expanding my strategy/playstyle. I think that it would be informative to play a more boom-and-adapt playstyle next, as that would force me out of my comfort zone and essentially be the exact opposite of what I've been practicing so far.

Byzantines certainly come to mind as a good choice for this with their cheap trash and high building HP facilitating defensive play, but I'm wondering if there are other good adaptation/generalist civs that I should look into? I know this is kind of the Chinese's calling card but I hover between 1000-1100 ELO and their opening scares me. Who else should I be looking into for this? Malians with their cheap buildings?
