Posted: 27 Feb 2022 02:48 PM PST It's interesting, only 30% of AoE3 players have the achievement on steam for winning a single multiplayer game, suggesting that most people play this game in single player mode. When I encounter people who say they mostly stick to single player, one of the main things they say is "well I tried multiplayer, but it's not fun because I host a room or join a room for noobs only, but then higher skilled people inevitably join and stomp me". I think a lot of noobs see casual games and ranked games as the two options and assume "oh casual must be for noobs whereas ranked games must be where all the pros are". That's actually completely backwards. Casual rooms are best used if you have specific people you already know who are at your level. In fact, they are commonly used at the very high level to setup matches for tourneys and for grinding strats, bc it can be hard for the very best people in aoe3 to find good games in quicksearch. If you are playing alone and you join a random casual game lobby, you will almost certainly either 1. get stomped or 2. stomp some poor person who is even more noob than you. The solution is to play ranked quick search. This is an ingenious system that will quickly figure out your rank, and then match you against people who are a similar rank to you, so you can play fun, competitive games where you will usually end up winning or losing about half the time, unless you start making some actual progress in learning the game. The only thing is you will probably have to lose about 5-10 games before the ELO system will accurately rank you, so don't worry about these early games. In fact, you might even want to just resign quickly in your first 5-10 games just so you can get ranked low sooner, so you can start playing fun games faster. [link] [comments]
is there sort of like a "free play" mode in the game? Posted: 28 Feb 2022 04:30 AM PST i just bought the game and finished the art of war tutorials, and was hoping to get into the game, choose an empire and build myself up from there. But so far all ive really seen is just the story mode, no real single player or "free play" kind of deal. i was just wondering whether or not the game has it and if it does, how do you get to it? thank you for any help [link] [comments]
Posted: 28 Feb 2022 05:12 AM PST The Halbedier is as German as it gets. Germans got none, Dutch got royal guard. Reiter are a German classic. Germans got War Wagons instead, which should have been a siege Unit like the Manlet Ulans should have been the German version of the Lancer. Husars would have made more historical sense as saber cavalry. A non-royal guard version of the Cuirassier as well, though that may have been too overpowered (maybe Home City only?). Also, assuming the whole "free units with every shipment" stick stays, there should be cards which change the type of free units early, so you aren't basically forced into cav rush/FF. Bonus idea: The free units are exclusively (a very small number) of mercs, switching between Swiss Pikemen (Pike), Landsknecht (Halbedier), Jaeger (Skirm), Black Riders (Dragoon/Reiter) and Polish Husars (Lancer/Ulan). The Doppelsoeldner should be the stronger version of the Landsknecht, not the other way around. They should honestly both be exclusive merc units, maybe permanently available by card, equivalent to the Ronin/Hatamoto Samurai. The whole "large native army of low pop units" does reflect Prussia better than the (in terms of population rather small) Netherlands Dutch should have way more focus on Navy and Asian Mercs, the lack of those once again reflects Prussia better. So, TLDR; a more historically accurate unit tree for the Germans: Husar, Ulan (Lancer), Reiter for cavalry Pikes, Crossbows, Halberdiers, Skirmishers for infantry Royal Guard for Ulan and Skirmisher, to not be too identical to the current Dutch. A musketeer home city card (like Dutch Waartgelders) Mercs with every shipment, unlocked are Swiss Pikemen and Landsknechte starting with Age2, Jaeger and Black Riders with Age3 and Polish Hussars (plus maybe a merc Grenadier?) with Age4. War wagon is an expensive Siege Unit available in Age2 replacing the standard Grenadier of other civs. [link] [comments]

Posted: 27 Feb 2022 01:36 AM PST As best as I can remember, I was playing as either Spain or Britain against Ottomans as AI. I remember I was behind on artillery so as an idea, I trained 6 petards. I had also located a factory in the Ottoman base so I used the petards to destroy it. I still lost, but I survived longer than I thought I would. In conclusions, petards cost 50 food and 100 wood but you will need about 6-7 to be effective in destroying an important target since you will likely lose a few beforehand, and that they are best against targets that the enemy can not replace including factories, wonders and dojos. That and 6-7 petards is no way a light investment. [link] [comments]
