Is there a mod to have African civilizations look black instead of white?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 02:42 PM PDT

It's kinda annoying imo when you pick Ethiopia or Malians and all the villagers are white??

Is there a mod for this?

What if we got some kind of "Onager ship" available to most civs? Could this change up water wars?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 03:54 PM PDT

It's pretty clear that AoE2's water balance is extremely tricky because anytime a player gets ahead in Castle Age, the opponent has basically already lost the war. There's just no good comeback mechanics if you're behind in ship numbers unless you're Portuguese and can avoid losing your land-based economy. Demolition Ships are too easily focused down, Fire Ships lose effectiveness as War Galley/Galleon numbers increase, and so forth. Water bonuses don't make enough of a difference to let a civilization catch up if they get outnumbered, as the enemy will usually just blow up the Docks and kill any Villagers who try to build new ones.

This sort of dynamic isn't what happens in land games. Even if your enemy gets a large group of Crossbowmen, you could take a large chunk of them out with a well-placed Mangonel shot, completely swinging momentum back in your favor. Or if your opponent has plenty of Knights out, you could convert several of them with Monks.

This makes me wonder about mechanics that could be introduced to try and make water battles less about whoever pumps out more ships and more about good control, while still giving reasonable comeback mechanics. One way I thought of was to introduce some kind of "Onager ship". Basically, it'd be a naval vessel that works like a Mangonel or Onager on the water, able to hit multiple enemies at once and potentially devastate a clumped up group of War Galleys. Of course, it'd be weak against Fire Ships due to minimum range, and if not properly escorted and/or controlled, War Galleys could still take it down while avoiding damage. But something like this would definitely make water battles more tactical.

That said, I don't know if there'd be much historical justification to an "Onager ship". I don't know if there was any kind of vessel commonly used in the timeline of AoE2 that could fit the criteria. But if there was, I think it'd make for a good addition to the game.

How to really get in the good books

    how to gain team mates?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 01:07 PM PDT

im trying to get a roster of people to play with and im finding it really hard. I joined a clan but it doesnt seem to do anything, doesnt try to get us to team together or anything. I have tried adding people after games that were on my team and i can find them in the "recent players" tab but there doesnt seem to be a way to add them as friends or contact them or join together, only options are to report and mute. How do I get onto a team or find people to play with consistently? I would really like to improve my game a lot but with no one to chat with its pretty hard and kind of boring. Im so excited about AOE2 DE but i have no one to share that with. any help would be much appreciated.

Playing my first team game since getting new DLC... As soon as I hit Castle Age this happened (none of these smoke/fire sprites were there before...)

    What’s the deal with Keshiks?

Alright but seriously this unit is ridiculous. I've seen it in the game files (for fellow modders, in AGE's unit tab) and what the hell, its gold generating abilities provide a key for implementing all kinds of ideas.

You could put a brand new technology in the Monastery and give it some ironic name, like "Fourth Crusade" that causes the effect that when Knights or Teutonic Knights kill Monks holding relics (which are their own thing, allowing for this) they earn gold bounties. Reward players for using relics to stage ambushes, while punishing grabbing a relic that you can't safely return with.

That kind of out-of-the-relic thinking is practically outlined in the game files if you connect the dots. It's very cool that some effects added way later in the game's history actually open up a lot of modding potential.

I'm making a mod right now and hell, I might try putting this in there.

Any essential mods that improve game play in general?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 02:34 PM PDT

    The mod I'm using is

    Visible corpses. Enhanced graphics.

I'm looking for mods that can improve the game like that. Nothing not realistic.

    Any tips?

Is it normal for the distance sheep spawn away from the TC to vary this much patch to patch?

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 03:45 PM PDT

A while ago I thought it would be interesting to see how far away pairs of Livestock Spawn on Arabia.

I Took maybe >30 Screenshots of their spawns and overlayed them to get an idea of the average, it was 12 tiles (from the edge of the TC's range).

Then when Dynasties of India came out my scouting became inconsistent, so I redid the screenshots and then the average came to 15.5.

Recently I had the same problem again. I haven't redone the screenshots yet but I've found sheep as far as 20 tiles out.

Is it normal for the devs to change the spawns so frequently?

Are they trying to slow down the Dark Age to stop early rushes?

After scouting for berries, boar, all livestock and pushing deer I'm only be able to start scouting the enemy on my way up to Feudal now. Feels very slow.

    Even/Odd colors

    Posted: 06 Jun 2022 05:30 PM PDT

90% of the time (not exaggerating) I queue up, I am stuck with the inferior even colors. It happens too much to be a coincidence. Why is that, and what's a guy gotta do to play as cyan once in a while?!!!
