Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 7 Week 5: Malay vs Portuguese

Glub glub it's some water civs glub glub

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Franks vs Teutons, and next up is the Malay vs Portuguese!

    Malay: Navaland Infantry civilization

    • Advancing in Age is +80% faster
    • Fish Traps cost -33%; provide unlimited food
    • Battle Elephants cost -30%
    • TEAM BONUS: Docks +100% LoS
    • Unique Unit: Karambit Warrior (Fast, cheap, weak infantry that only takes up .5 pop space)
    • Unique Building: Harbor (Dock upgrade that gives the building moderate defensive capabilities)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Thalassocracy (Upgrades Docks to Harbors)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Forced Levy (Removed gold cost for Swordsmen-line)

    Portuguese: Naval and Gunpowder civilization

    • All units cost -15% gold
    • Ships +10% hp
    • Can build Feitoria in Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Cartography available from beginning of the game
    • Unique Unit: Organ Gun (Light artillery unit)
    • Unique Unit: Caravel (Galley-like ship that deals pass-through damage)
    • Unique Building: Feitoria (Takes up 20 pop space; generates infinite resources very very slowly)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Carrack (Ships +1/+1 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Arquebus (Gunpowder units can accurately hit moving targets)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • So for 1v1 Arabia, neither of these civs are terrible, but neither are exactly top 10 material. Malay boast an incredibly powerful eco, as well as inevitability via Forced Levy, but possess awful cavalry and are quite vulnerable in early Feudal Age. Meanwhile, the Portuguese boast a broad tech tree, a powerful unique unit, but lack useful bonuses. Which do you favor overall here?
    • Of course, the setting where both these civs shine is on the water. Malay can get a powerful eco going fairly early, and then spam Harbors all the way to victory; but Portuguese have an actual military bonus for their ships, as well as the powerful Caravel in the later parts of the game. Water maps are very diverse, so which sort of maps do you favor either of the other?
    • In my opinion, both of these civs are solid, if not quite top-tier, flank civs in a team game. Both have BBT, Arbalests, and Halberdiers - Malay just have the better eco and Portuguese have the better late-game army comp. Which civ would you rather have taking all the hurt while you 5 TC boom as pocket?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussion with the Italians vs Vikings. Hope to see you there! :)

    Posted: 17 Oct 2019 05:16 AM PDT

Hey y'all! Yesterday a player asked me to change the map to green Arabia. Where do I find this map? And the map scripts I have downloaded in the past; how do I add them on voobly?

    Best Michi Civs?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 09:42 PM PDT

Been playing tons of Michi lately, looking for ideas on good Cvis, so far had good results with Mongols (Mangudai eat siege up pretty well and hold well vs Palas if you mass them) and Khmer (super quick age ups with no buildings needed and massed Ballista Elephants are near unstoppable.

At what level of gameplay do you think civilization match ups actually play a large role / impact in deciding who has the edge in a match?

    Posted: 16 Oct 2019 05:09 PM PDT

I know that even in beginner match ups civlizations have an impact all be it very little, but I feel that even after months of playing Aoe2 and being around 1.9K-2K rating on steam that the civilization choice often makes little to no difference.

From pro play though and theory, a meta for each civilization arises and for good reason, it's the most effective strategy for the civilization. I'm just wondering at what level of gameplay do you think civilization choice makes the largest impact, obviously even pros switch things up and you always have to adapt, but 9/10 times there will be a best strategy like fast castling and adding 2 TCs before a castle for mayans on Arena (if memory serves me right).

Edit: Like for example at my level I can go scouts into knights as Britons in arabia and still win half the time even though it's obviously far from optimal.
