Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 7 Week 13: Khmer vs Mayans

Okay okay hold your pitchforks and torches, and just think this one through.... and then take back out your pitchforks and torches

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Burmese vs Chinese, and next up is the Khmer vs Mayans!

    Khmer: Siege and Elephant civilization

    • No buildings required to advance to the next age or to unlock other buildings
    • Battle Elephants move +15% faster
    • Villagers can garrison in Houses
    • TEAM BONUS: Scorpions +1 range
    • Unique unit: Ballista Elephant (For the love of DauT, don't use it in DE right now - it's bugged and sux)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Tusk Swords (Battle Elephants +3 attack)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Double Crossbow (Ballista Elephants and Scorpions fire an additional projectile)

    Mayans: Archer civilization

    • Start with +1 Villager, but -50f
    • Resources last +15% longer
    • Archers cost -10/20/30% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Walls cost -50%
    • Unique Unit: Plumed Archer (Cheap, tanky, and nimble foot archer)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Obsidian Arrows (Archer-line gets +6 attack vs buildings)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: El Dorado (Eagle Warriors +40 hp)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay okay I'm not going to pretend like this is a great one for Khmer, especially on 1v1 open maps. HOWEVER, if the Khmer player manages to survive the midgame, perhaps thanks to some handy 8 range scorpions, will the power of elephants be able to flatten Mayans in Imperial Age?
    • In a team game scenario, Mayans are absolutely a top-tier flank civ, but Khmer are none-too-shabby as a pocket civ. Would you prefer Mayans with their strong, straightforward gameplay, or do you see potential in the whacky world of fully upgraded elite battle elephants + siege from your pocket Khmer player?
    • In that most important of match-ups - vs Cumans - do you see any potential in either of these civs to break the Cuman code? (at least, until the next patch) Mayan plumes can potentially dance around steppe lancers and pick them off 1-by-1, and Elephants generally don't care too much about the flies buzzing around them, so long as you can get to them. Thoughts?

Thank you as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Slavs vs Vietnamese. Hope to see you there! :)

Anyone else just not really good but still enjoy the game?

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 04:51 PM PST

I'm not talking bad against other players, I mean bad against AI even on hard difficulty. I can fast castle fairly quickly but I just can't micromanage the military and delegation of vil activities while building an army and defending/attacking.

It just is what it is. I try my hand at hard to get better but I usually succumb to overwhelming odds at a certain point. I still enjoy it, I'm just very much a casual player. I've accepted that I'll probably never have the micromanaging skills to get better - and I'm ok with it.

What's the downside of tower rushing?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 02:55 AM PST

I've been tower rushed multiple times and pretty much lost everytime because of it. Then I watched somw videos on how to defend and now I can always defend myself using my own towers and not letting the enemy advance their towers while having a few vills on stone.

The problem is, it seems like there's no downside for the enemy. His economy is still intact and he can advance to castle easily.

Usually there's a disadvantage and an advantage to rushes. If he rushes with units and I defend, now i'm in a better position and advance faster in castle age, but with towers it seems they can apply pressure for free and also advance faster.

How can I take advantage if I managed to defend against a trush?

Question: I dont own AoE DE so i dont know what is the deal with the Cumans, i even search the history of them(Basically Turkish Chads until the Mongols kicked their asses), so what s the deal, they are OP, or UP? (Also this is a random cool image i found on google)

Choose colour in random 1v1 ranked game?

    Posted: 11 Dec 2019 03:25 AM PST

Is it possible. I know, not a very important thing, but i like choosing my own color. In StarCraft 2 you can choose which colour your units appear for you, as well as the colour the enemy appears to you. The opponent can do the same for themselfes in their options. Possible? Comming? Would like to know :)

Edit: Definitive edition is meant here

Beginners' Civ Build Orders Guide (Updated)

    Posted: 10 Dec 2019 01:41 PM PST

    Hi everyone,

A while back I posted this spreadsheet which has a list of all the civs and what their ideal Build Orders are. The idea behind was NOT to be a comprehensive guide on how to play each civ - I know that what Build you do is dependent on your opponent or your map. The point was for newer players to be able to look at this list and see what a strong Build Order would be for any civ. For example, the Japanese are flexible enough to open either Scouts or Man At Arms, but given their Infantry attack bonus, a Man At Arms opening is clearly their "strongest" option.

I've since updated it with the new civs (check the "Civs (UPDATED)" tab.

I've separated the Builds into four sections:

    1. Ideal Opening (i.e. Scouts/Drush/Man At Arms)
    2. Transition (once you've got your initial units out, what should you then do)
    3. Castle Age (what you should produce when you get to Castle Age)
    4. Imperial Age (what is an ideal composition for each civ when they things start to go into the late game)

If you're a new player, you might find this helpful. If you have any thoughts/feedback, please let me know.
