    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 08:46 AM PST

Devs, just focus on fixing these bugs please

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:18 AM PST

This game is basically perfect. Since the Cumans/Steppe Lancers were fixed I would rate this game as pure gold with infinite replay value. However I am having trouble keeping myself playing ranked all day as I would like because of a few major bugs.

    1) Many of us are still often having problems with inexplicable crashes. It's not a matter of computer performance and nobody in the community seems to have found a solution.

    2) The stuck villager bug is irritating. Somebody posted a good video on here recently showing what causes it.

    3) There are still rare problems with getting commands missing from the usual window when a building or unit is selected.

Fix these and I will have no complaints about anything ever again.

Saracen Unique Tech "Madrasah" Rework : "Caliphate"

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 05:03 AM PST

"The name Saracen applied originally to nomadic desrt people from nomadic desert peoples from the area stretching from modern Syria to Saudi Arabia. In broader usage the name applied to all Arabs of the Middle Ages. These desert nomads erupted suddenly in the seventh century and established a far-reaching empire within a century and a half. Their conquest was fueled by faith and high morale." -Official AoE2 history

Why Madrasah is underwhelming and is suited for rework

Madrasah is often considered to be a very weak unique tech which provide no bonus if you were playing good (i.e not getting your monk killed). And provide little bonus if you were intent on actually getting your monk killed, causing Saracens' monk to effectively cost 67 gold. However Aztecs monk rush are more popular due to better economy and beneficial bonus for their monk and Portuguese having 85 gold Monk, meanwhile Burmese have 50% cheaper monastery tech.

Caliphate - Monk generate 0.285 gold per second, Up to 0.855 gold per second (with 3 monks)

With this proposed tech, Saracen are incentived to make Monks, and can emphasize their history as THE Islamic Caliphate. Rashidun Caliphate, Umayyad Caliphate and Abbasid Caliphate are dominant power so I believe a unique tech that showcases this instead of Madrasah is more appropriate.

    Numbers and stuff
Gold relic generate 0.5 gold per second, Dark age generic villager produce average 0.38 gold per second. So Caliphate won't substitude gold miner and will be a good addition to relic gold with 1 monk paying itself after 5.84 minute

Why Caliphate can solve some of the problems of Madrasah
The tech incentives player to build monk early to maximise it's gold generation. Which is the goal of the Saracen's unique tech rework; make Saracen have incentive to make monk early. Not only this, having idle monk can cause player to look for relic, which has a side bonus as emphasizing Saracen's religious background

What problems Caliphate may not solve
The design of the tech is set in a way where the tech could be either too weak or too op and it will definitely won't make Saracen monk rush more popular due to being gated by a castle. The tech might be hard to make use effectively for new player since most often they can't use monk efficiently so they will just make their monk hide in the corner instead of using them

tl;dr Caliphate - Monk generate 0.285 gold per second, Up to 0.855 gold per second (with 3 monks)

How to improve my late Castle/Imperial Age?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:38 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm fairly new to the game (I played a bit on HD but not much), and I'm at 900-1000 elo atm. I improved quite a bit my early games by learning the build orders and doing the art of war/the cicero scenarios so now I can win on late feudal/early castle.

But once the game reach late castle/post imp, I just cannot win anymore. I think I rely too much on my economy and my opponent always win the decisives battles.

I tried to practise on Arena vs a Hard AI (I can win vs hard AI on Arabia, but not on Arena) but it's all the same. I'm ahead in points untill he comes with his army in early Imp and wreck me.

    What would you advise ?

    Thanks a lot

Game crashes... Is this being looked into?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:33 AM PST

Sorry if this has been answered but when I search aoe2 game crashes I just see many posts about people having the same issue - the one where you're playing and the game freezes for 2 seconds or so and then kicks you to the desktop. Does anyone know of the devs are working towards a fix?

    Project Tibet: Tibetan Civilization Concept

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 05:33 PM PST

    Project Tibet: Tibetan Civilization Concept

In my previous post, I've mentioned that I'm currently designing a custom campaign that highlights the history of the Tibetan Empire. In this post, I'll be sharing my Tibetan civilization concept. The Tibetan civilization concept you see in this post (the tech tree, civ bonuses, and unique units and techs) will be the "tech tree" and "civilization" you will play as in my campaign and I'll do the best of my ability to replicate everything from the civ bonuses to unique units and techs with triggers in the scenario editor (although some features may not be possible).

A quick rundown on my goal with my civilization concept and my custom campaign:

    • Convince the devs to officially add Tibetans as a playable civilization in Definitive Edition -OR-
    • Convince the devs to consider adding modding features that allows modders to add custom made new civilizations without overwriting existing civilizations via datasets.

I've mentioned about my old Tibetan civ concept (link here) a while ago and the problem I had with it. Basically, back then, I had a lack of understanding of gameplay and my own stubborness. With that being said, any feedback you give to me in my civ concept, I'll reflect in my custom campaign (i.e. if you think the Tibetans shouldn't get Arbalests, I can modify my civ concept and reflect it on my custom campaign) and trying to put into gameplay balance with my civ concept.

    Now, the civilization concept:

Tibetans (cavalry archer and monk civilization)

    • Architecture set: Central Asian (same architecture set Cumans and Tatars have)
    • Wonder: Samye Monastery

    Civilization Icon (White Lion)

    Civilization Bonuses:

    • Can train yaks from Mills.
    • Knights +1 pierce armor.
    • Monks cost -25 gold.
    • Can build Dzong in the Imperial Age.

Gameplay notes: Training yaks form Mills cost 30 wood and the yak is a herdable that yelds 150 food, the same amount of food a cow and water buffalo have. This is roughly 5 food generate per wood and more cost effective than Feudal Age farms. To balance this out, the Tibetans do not get Crop Rotation. That being said, if this eco bonus is too strong in the Feudal Age, I might consider removing Heavy Plow for the Tibetans for further balance this.

In regards to Knights +1 pierce armor. I think everyone would agree that Tibetans having fully upgradable paladins and +1 pierce armor for knights is enough justification to not let the Tibetans have Bloodlines from a gameplay perspective.

    Team Bonuses:

    • Can research Mantras tech from the Monastery.
    • Knights attack 10% faster.

    Unique Techs:

    • Mantras (Castle Age tech, can be researched in the Monastery, cost: 250 gold): Successful conversion cost 50% faith.

Gameplay notes: Because Mantras is considered a Monastery tech which can be obtained through the team bonus, civilization and/or team bonuses related to Monastery techs are affected. This includes: Burmese cheaper Monastery techs, Chinese cheaper techs, Lithuanian's monastery work rate, and Aztec HP bonus for Monks.

    • Khampa Bloodlines (Castle Age tech, cost: 250 food, 150 gold): All cavalry units (except cavalry archers and knights) regenerate health.

Gameplay notes: The reason Knights aren't affected by Khampa Bloodlines is because fully upgradable Paladins without Bloodlines and +1 pierce armor will be insanely broken if they also have health regeneration. Cavalry archers not affected by HP regeneration of Khampa Bloodlines is more to balance out their Imperial Age tech. This tech is designed to give the player the incentive to make camels, steppe lancers, and light cavalry without Bloodlines. HP regeneration is 15 HP per minute, the same rate as the Berber's Maghrabi Camels tech.

    • Qinghai Bow (Imperial Age tech, cost: 600 wood, 600 gold): Archers and cavalry archers fire two projectiles.

Gameplay notes: Genitours are not affected by the additional projectiles unique tech since they are technically are considered mounted skirmishers. Kipchaks via Cuman Mercenaries only fire one extra projectile instead. The extra projectile fired from cavalry archers and archers do not have 0 melee damage, meaning the extra projectile will not deal a lot of damage vs. rams. Similarly, the extra projectile is not affected by other civilization bonuses such as the Saracen team bonus.

In terms of statline, Tibetan Heavy Cavalry archers without Bloodlines but have access to other techs is roughly similar to the Cuman Kipchak with Bloodlines. With that being said, Cuman Elite Kipchaks and even Turkish and Magyar Heavy Cavalry Archers are still better than Tibetan Heavy Cavalry Archers.

Unique Unit: Dharmapala - A light cavalry unit with 100% resistance to conversion and can heal nearby allied units. Good vs. unique units and Monks.

Unit Cost 75 Food, 50 gold
    Training Time 27 seconds
    HP 70, 80 (elite)
    Attack 8, 9 (elite)
+12, +14 (elite) attack vs. Monks
+5, +6 (elite) vs. unique unit
Range 0 (when in combat), 4 (when healing allied units)
    Rate of Fire 1.85
    Armor 0
    Pierce Armor 1, 2 (elite)
    Armor Class Cavalry
    Unique Unit
    Speed 1.5
    Line of Sight 7
Upgrade Cost 650 Food, 850 gold
    Upgrade Time 60 seconds

Unique Building: Dzong- A sturdy and expensive fortress that can train Dharmapala, Trebuchets, Petards, Villagers, and Monks. Can research Castle techs. Villagers can drop off resources. Slowly generates gold (20 gold/minute). Cannot be converted. Maximum limit: 3.

    Type Military, Defensive building
    Population 30
Use Train Dharmapala, villagers, monks, and siege weapons; Research technologies; drop off resources; generate gold.
    Cost 1000 stone, 600 wood, 200 gold
    Construction Time 300 seconds
    Size 4x4 titles
    HP 6000
    Garrison 30
    Attack 13
    Attack bonuses +2 vs. Spearman
    Rate of fire 1.93
    Range 8
    Minimum Range 1
    Melee Armor 8
    Pierce Armor 11
Armor Class Building (+8), Standard Building
    Line of Sight 13

Gameplay notes: The Dzong is basically a stronger version of a Castle with a mixed function of a Town Center. With the being said, Dzongs are not affected by Hoardings to balance out the sturdiness of the Dzong, but still very strong defensive structure when Masonry and Architecture are researched (bringing the HP around 7,260). EDIT: Clarification of build limit. The maximum is three at any time. Meaning if one of the Dzongs are destroyed when you have three built, you are allowed to build another one, but you are not allowed to be more than three Dzongs at any time during the game.

    Disabled Techs:

    • Infantry: All Militia line upgrades, Halberdier, Supplies, Tracking, Eagle Scout.
    • Archery Range: Hand Cannoneer
    • Stables: Bloodlines, Battle Elephants.
    • Siege Workshop: Capped Ram, Scorpion, Bombard Cannon
    • Navy: War Galley, Fast Fire Ship, Heavy Demolition Ship, Cannon Galleon, Careening, Shipwright.
    • Defense: Bombard Tower
    • Monastery: N/A
    • Blacksmith: Chain Mail Armor, Plate Mail Armor
    • University: Heated Shot, Siege Engineers
    • Economy: Crop Rotation, Two-Man Saw

    Tech Tree:

    Tibetan tech tree

Additional bonus fun, Spirit of the Law rankings:

    • Infantry: F
    • Archery: A+
    • Cavalry: S
    • Siege: C-
    • Navy: F
    • Monk: S
    • Defense: A
    • Economy: A (early game until Castle), B (late game)

    Maps for DE

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 07:18 AM PST

I am watching NAC III right now and cross seems like an interesting map but I can't find it when I try to play it in the single player. I looked in the mods if I can get it there but I couldn't find it there either. Am I just blind or do you have to get the map from an other source?

    Mono armies why?

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:44 AM PST

Why are the pro matches Villese Vs LAAAAAN so mono army heavy, always X bow Vs X bow, eagles Vs eagles etc, sometimes you will see siege.

Is there never enough time to build up a counter while maintaining a force?

Do people switch between units before trash wars.

    Thx for any answers

    DE Ranked map pool customisation

    Posted: 06 Jan 2020 06:26 AM PST

    1) There should be no limit to the number of maps you can ban in ranked. If you want to play arena, arabia, or bf exclusively at the cost of longer queues you should be able to.

    2) The map pool should include every map. That way you can enable the maps you want play and disable the rest. Combined with the above change this would bring the full creativity and variety of aoe to fruition.

Improvements to non in-game social/matchmaking feature list

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:58 AM PST

There have been plenty of posts and feedback about ingame performance, melee pathing, connection issues, etc so in this post I'm going to focus on the social and lobby features that are badly lacking from AoE 2 Definitive Edition, especially compared to the extensive (yet dated) features of Voobly.

These are features that have the most quality of life benefits for the lowest amount of developer effort, ie. low hanging fruit. But, because they aren't part of the actual gameplay, they seem to have been almost completely overlooked. Here are the features I want to see:

    1. Ingame friend/watch list and chat

This is one that I would consider to be half implemented at best. First of all, using Steam for your friends list is an unnecessary hurdle, as finding and chatting with people is a pain, and it requires you to bring up the Steam overlay. We need a true ingame friend/chat function. As it stands, you have no way to view your friends list (outside of Steam or the invite to lobby feature), no way to chat, and there are no public chat functionalities at all. We need a friends list, we need the ability to have direct messages and group messages, and a watch list functionality to spectate your favorite players would also be amazing.

    2. Numbered lobbies

This may seem like a minor or unnecessary thing, but the ability to tell people exactly which lobby to go to, that doesn't require a friend list at all, is extremely useful. This is useful for both public and passworded lobbies. As it stands, finding individual game rooms is scattershot at best, and this is made worse while spectating since you can only join in-progress games during the first few minutes of the game.

    3. Better spectator delay options

This is a simple and easy one. Make it possible to join as a spectator after the first 5 minutes of the games, and make more options for spectator delay. The default on Voobly is 1.5 minutes, whereas the delays possible on DE are 0, 1, 5, and 10 minutes. (Not to mention the sparse spectating features in-game)

    4. Visible Elo scores in unranked game rooms

Again, a no-brainer. There is nothing worse than going into a casual team game with absolutely no knowledge of the player skill levels, and no ability to balance the teams. It benefits nobody having one team absolutely run over the opposing team.

    5. Ability to view player profiles in game

This is more of a want than a need, but I really like being able to look up a player to see their match record, favorite civs and maps, and so forth. You should be able to see the Elo and win rates of more than the top 100 players without using a third party website.

    6. Separate map pools for 1v1 and team games

Another want, but some maps are more naturally suited for one game mode than others. I don't know anyone who enjoys Black Forest 1v1s, but it's one of if not the most popular team game map. This would also enable us to have different banning options for team games versus 1v1s. This is maybe the most contentious thing on this list, but the details of each map pool aren't as important to me as the distinction between 1v1 and team games.

    7. See whether opponents have pick civ or random civ

The fact that people have no way of knowing whether their opponent has picked a (usually top tier) civ means that everyone is entered into a prisoner's dilemma, where even if they would prefer to go random civ, they are at a major disadvantage because they have no way of knowing if their opponent is picking a civ. Simply indicating whether or not someone is going random would be a way to make going random viable in a competitive sense. The meta is so stale right now with everyone picking one of a handful of strong civs. We have 30+ civs right now, let's use them!

    8. Navigate away from screen during queue, chat with teammates before selections

Easy easy easy fix. When you're queued up for a game, it can take many minutes. Why can't we chat with our teammates or check the leaderboards or profiles?

    9. Clan chat / functionality / forums

Make a clan chatroom. Maybe even a basic forum feature. Remove the 50 player cap. Simple as that.

Did I miss anything? Again we're focusing on non in-game features.

Cuman Mercenaries in AoE2 (Spirit of the Law)

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 01:02 PM PST

Please do not buy the microsoft store version of this game. It is so unbelievably shitty

    Posted: 05 Jan 2020 09:54 AM PST

I have both versions because I got the bundle from steam because my brother really wanted to play AOE1 DE with me. It updates perfectly, never freezes online for some reason(idk why since they use the same servers) and doesn't give errors EVER.

The microsoft store version is garbage and every few days just stops working with some weird error about a file not being found, causing me to repair and reinstall it. When the december patch came it took me 3 redownloads to get it to stop getting errors (I've made posts about the glitches and errors search my account if you want to)

It would seem in 2020 simply servicing a game from an online store should be child's play to any company, much less one as big as Microsoft. It shouldn't even be a issue of worrying about piracy, since you use a Microsoft account for online (cant imagine a lot of people play AOE and not go online) so its not even that

This is without a doubt the worst service I've ever seen, to anyone thinking about getting the MS store version because its cheaper, DO NOT. Absolute. Garbage.

TL;DR Get the steam version even if you have to pay 10 dollars more, it will save you a ton of heart ache
