Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 8 Week 7: Berbers vs Byzantines

    Battle of the cheap camels!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Bulgarians vs Huns, and next up is the Berbers vs Byzantines!

    Berbers: Cavalry and Naval civilization

    • Villagers move +10% faster
    • Stable units cost -15/20% in Castle/Imperial Age
    • Ships move +10% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Genitour available at Archery Range starting in Castle Age
    • Unique Unit: Camel Archer (Anti-cav archer... cav archer)
    • Unique Unit: Genitour (Mounted Skirmisher)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Kasbah (TEAM Castles work +25% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Maghrebi Camels (Camel units slowly regenerate hp)

    Byzantines: Defensive civilization

    • Buildings +10/20/30/40% hp per Age
    • Camels, Skirmishers, and Spearmen cost -25%
    • Fire Ships attack +20% faster
    • Advancing to Imperial Age costs -33%
    • Town Watch free
    • TEAM BONUS: Monks heal +50% faster
    • Unique Unit: Cataphract (Heavy cavalry with anti-infantry attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Greek Fire (Fire Ships +1 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Logistica (Cataphracts deal 5 trample damage)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alright, so in your typical 1v1 on open maps, both of these civs I would consider to be solid options, but are still overshadowed by many of the top civs. However, as both civs lack a strong early-mid game eco bonus, this match up strikes me as pretty even. Both can field very cost-efficient armies, and both have powerful things to do with their gold. Who do you favor here?
    • On water maps, again, both of these civs are actually quite strong options, but are unfortunately overshadowed by the top tier picks. Berbers are the only civ that can pick their engagements on water - either by pouncing on lower numbers of enemy ships or by sailing away when at a disadvantage. Meanwhile, Byzantines have the best fire ships in the game, as well as a complete Dock tech tree to boot. Which civ would you rather play when you roll Team Islands?
    • Specifically talking about late game 1v1s on any land map, both of these civs seem to have their advantages. Berbers lack halbs and siege rams, but possess some incredible gold-retention with regenerating, nimble, camel archers, on top of their access to cheap hussars and genitours (lul). Meanwhile, Byzantines may lack the ability to field as strong an army with their gold (Arbs and Monks are probs your best choice here), but can seriously grind you down under a mountain of cheap trash units. Who do you favor past the 40 minute mark on a land map 1v1?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Britons vs Magyars. Hope to see you there! :)

My interesting and creative way to get gold from my enemy.

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:56 AM PST

As I posted before about my longest game ever. I want to share my most Interesting win ever. See, my games with my cousin would take an average of 8 hours each. We would run out of gold and stone and just trash our way to victory. In one instance I didn't Want to trash my way to victory so I decided I needed scorpions to fight the Japanese halbs. My trash were not as good as his, (I was Spanish) and I was out of gold. I decided to cut through the trees (black forest ludicrous size) and sold wood till I got enough for 50 carts. I sent my carts to the back of his base and traded with him for 20 minutes before he noticed. I had made profit already lol. (please if something doesn't seem right keep in mind we were noobs back then) it certainly deserves to be a low elo legends video but it's too old and too long. (like 3 years ago)

Eagle warriors with cloaks of invisibility

Eagle warriors with cloaks of invisibility

So my group of friends and I are still playing aoe2 HD because one of them has a second rate PC (I don't blame him, he is a peasant from Manduria in southern Italy with a troubled past and a rather dysfunctional family).

But I have a problem: I can't see eagle warriors. They are invisible most of the time and become visible only intermittently. This happened to me in multiplayer games but also in the scenario editor. Have a look at this video:

Any suggestions on how to solve this issue?

    Fish traps placement question

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 05:30 AM PST

Hey guys just wondering what is the best possible placement for fish traps. Let's say I'm playing as Malay and I'm going to support my eco with fishing, what is the best formation for mass ships in a large body of water and best for a smaller body like a pond or something? Thanks

    Villagers staggering?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 03:39 AM PST

I'm not sure if this is a bug with DE pathing or a feature. Villagers seems to randomly pause when walking. Just lost a villager to the boar because of this.

    VPNStein Seemingly Not Completely Uninstalled

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 02:11 AM PST

Hey I downloaded AoE 2 Tools and uninstalled recently. This was supposed to get rid of VPNStein also. I can't find any trace of it other than when I start up my computer now the internet won't connect for about a minute and VPNStein shows up in the wireless networks area under "Dial-up and VPN" as if it's trying to connect.

It's pretty annoying does anyone know how to get rid of this completely?

Are Leitis stupid OP? How to counter this unit?

    Posted: 12 Feb 2020 07:07 AM PST

I know not much attention has been paid to the Leitis because Steppe Lancers and Konniks stole the show when DE first released. But these Leitis are slipping under the radar for too long.

Let me make it short and sweet: LEITIS ARE RIDICULOUSLY OP

It pisses me off that if pros don't complain, the devs assume everything is fine. But the game is played by us plebs too and everything is not fine.

Or am I such a bad player that I haven't figured out how to counter it yet? How do I counter a unit that ignores one of the most basic defenses in the game: armor. Without armor, nothing can survive long enough to deal damage to the Leitis. Not pikes, not archers, not knights, not camels.

Whose stupid idea was it ignore armor? I mean come on. At least make it limited like ignore armor over 5 or ignore only infantry armor to kinda follow that anti-Teuton thing. Something has to be done. This unit is completely broken.

    New player question

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 09:54 PM PST

So I've recently purchased AOE2 DE after playing AOE3 for years off and on, and was wondering what are some good factions for a beginner and if there are any major differences I should be aware of.

    Thanks.

Just Did The Tutorial, Calm But Nervous

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 02:35 PM PST

Recently created a Reddit account to share my delight in this game. I've just started playing the 2013 HD version, which i've had in my library a long while - and I quite enjoy the game!

The tutorial was amazing for both plot and learning, though I didn't do too well on the last 2 stages of it (It was hard for me to just move across the map to deal with villagers and the fighting against the English; even forgot a monk in the allied villa)

The narrator said at the end of the 5th scenario that I should have all the knowledge I need to play a Random map, though I am incredibly nervous for starting one. I decided to start playing b/c a friend linked me Spirit of the Law's newest video on Lithuanian history and I got sucked in. Seeing the AI (even HD) going so well makes me feel like I won't even stand a chance. Definitely excited to give it a go, but will be a struggle when apparently just the first 3 minutes is a very specific build order.

    Help w/ early Castle Age

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 10:43 AM PST

I'm definitely a poor player in that I haven't mastered build orders to the letter, but I do a decent job of getting to Feudal Age quickly and then more or less to Castle Age. However, it's at this point that I start to fall behind. I'm definitely not accustomed to rushing (I was an original AoE II player 20 years ago that just did multiplayer v friends and built up for a huge battle royale at Imperial Age) but also don't feel like I have the best strategy on defensive building / walls. I think I do a good job of building up economy but I'll get behind in games where I don't have enough units yet thousands in resources.

Assuming this is mostly an issue of not enough military building and focusing on that?

I guess main question is - what can a bad player like me do better to maximize decent economy skills as I get into Castle Age?
