    Poor CaptureAge

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 10:24 PM PST

I was just watching the Hidden Cup 2 finals, and was reminded of the greatness of CaptureAge.

I also feel so bad for the CaptureAge devs. They spend 1000s of hours on a passion project to improve spectating for a 20 year old classic game with a burgeoning eSport scene. And just months later their work is no longer compatible with the game version which is played competitively.

RIP the eSport of classic pre-DE AoE2.

Survey - Why do you play?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 05:23 AM PST

    Hello everyone,

At the Department of Psychology at Lund University, Sweden, We are currently running a research project which studies gaming habits, motives for gaming and general well-being . We're interested in hearing from anyone who plays games on PC, console or mobile, and is 16 years or above.

The questionnaire takes about 10-15 minutes to complete, and you will have the option to receive an automatically generated report on your motives for gaming based on your answers.

i was trying to do fast-castle into knights, but thx to DE's perfect villager pathfinding, I can't.

I'm really enjoying not playing random civ

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 02:14 AM PST

With random civ I could never decide between scouts or archers or men at arms. Or is get to castle and just make tcs because I have no idea what to make.

Now i see the map, come up with a plan, then pick a civ to do it. A lot more relaxing and a lot more competitive.

Who is into HC3 at the moment?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 07:15 AM PST

Can someone smarter than me make a self-refreshing list of the 32 guys who will play in the HC3 qualifier, by using the aoe2 dot net API? I tried myself but I'm too noob to make so that the list sorts itself from the highest elo to the lowest automatically (and like this it's kind of useless lol).

I think it would be helpful to both the players who are competing to know who are they temporarily seeded against, and the viewers hyped for this event to happen.

Here you can find the accounts who signed up https://www.aoezone.net/threads/hidden-cup-3-sign-ups.162898/ .

I would guess the important parameter that will seed the players is the average between current elo and highest elo, it wasn't explained like this (the rules only say that both are important for seeding) but it's the normal thing I expect robo to do (luckily the API gives both values).

    Building mill on deer?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 12:59 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm new to AOE2. I've been trying to get better, specifically at the early game. Something I've latched on to is going for a fast castle. I'm still pretty slow on the build (record time is only 16 min). One thing I'm having difficulty with is deer. I still can't get my scout to lure them. I'm getting better, but it takes so much of my focus that I end up screwing something up with resources elsewhere. One guide I've been following suggests milling them when there are 4+. However, it doesn't really specify how/when to do this and I've not been successful.

I play mostly Black Forest right now and there seems to be almost always a group of 4 deer (sometimes the 2 boars aren't far off either). If I should build a mill, how should I do it?

Here is the build I've been trying to master (just researched a few strategies on youtube):

    • 1-6 sheep
    • 7-10 wood
    • 11 boar
    • 12 house then berries
    • 12-15 berries
    • 16-20 sheep
    • 21-23 wood
    • 23-26 gold

It seems like there are quite a few options, but I have no idea how to really fit the mill in.

    • I could skip the boar at 11/ and instead build a mill on the deer starting with villager 11. Then I would also skip the berries with 12-15 and have them farm deer instead.
    • Starting at villager 16 I could build a new mill on the deer.
    • Skip the deer altogether and farm them in castle age.

Really, it just seems like the deer are slowing me down. Which makes me lean towards just ignoring it until castle age.

    Thanks!

Cuman ram push (build order and discussion)

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:32 PM PST

I've been playing, pretty much, only Cuman fuedal rush for the last 3 weeks with a lot of success I thought I share the build order and tips that I figured out so far. Keep in mind I'm not pro player or anything like that.

    Build order goes like this:

    6 on sheep

    3 on wood

    next lures boar

next goes on berries (make a mill)

next makes house then lure boar

next two join in on the boar so now u have 10 on boar

next three on berries so now we have 4 on berries

next two go on wood so now we are at 19 pop with 5 on wood, 4 on berries and 9 on boar + a scout

    get loom then go feudal

right after you click feudal, transition villagers from boar so that 2 go on stone, 2 on gold and 5 villagers go forward to the opponent

As soon as your feudal there are a few things you need to do: make a tower with your forward villagers, wall it in (try to tower his berries, or woodline to disrupt his eco).

keep making villagers to go on wood

gold villagers build a blacksmith and get fletching

    make a forward siege workshop

Now, you need to work your way to the enemy TC so that you have a tower in range of it (keep this in mind when placing your first tower). Make sure your towers are connected (can range each other). I like to send only one ram forward at the start to smash some buildings close to the towers but don't go for the his TC until you have like 4 rams (4 seems to be the magic number if you want to kill the tc). Hide the rams in your siege workshop then unleash them at the same time when your ready. Now you have 5 villagers in the tower that's ranging the TC, use it to snipe the enemy villagers that are trying to kill the rams. Walling in your towers can be helpful as well. I like to at least wall them like this: https://imgur.com/0OOiqWE This way you can still garrison with out a problem, you will have to delete one of those walls when ungarrisoning though.

Now this is how it usually goes when things going good. Ofc you have to be flexible and see how the opponent reacts.

    Black Forest starting strategy

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 03:27 AM PST

How do you properly start a Black Forest game and wall the choke point? Seems like if I send one vil my opponent sends 2 and mine dies. If I send two then I over extend And get housed or no vil production. What's the proper way to wall/start bf?

Lag while playing online with friends

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 02:25 AM PST

I like to play AoE2:DE with some friends, but have run into an issue: a lot of games just become unplayable for the lobby host due to lag.

I generally host, and computer passes the performance test you need to do before ranked. I think I had a 1200. My friend, who has a similar computer also ran into the problem when we decided he should try to host.

A temporary fix seems to be to save the game, and rehost a lobby, but this is obviously not a great solution.

One thing I always noted was that my ping was always very high (>100 ms). I get like 30ms in most other games. Could it be that we're playing on servers in the wrong region?

Has anyone else ran into this problem, or does anyone know a fix?

Noob Question - Control Group and TCs

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 06:52 PM PST

If I queue a TC to build, add it to my TC control group, and wait for it to build, it seems to automatically remove itself from the control group when the building finishes... Is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

I also don't seem to be able to set a TC rally point until it completes construction. Does everyone else have this happen? I'd like to do more pre-building construction, but seems like the game doesn't allow it... Please let me know.

    Thanks,

    Tyler

    Sheep/goats spawn to far away?

    Posted: 09 Feb 2020 07:45 PM PST

I've had a couple ranked games that seemed the sheep/goats were ridiculously far. 2 games today couldn't get them in time for the build. One game me and my opponent had 2 missing. In short, sheep need to be closer to the TC. Anyone else having trouble?

Need some help with gifting the game.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 01:21 AM PST

    Hello.

My uncle has been playing aoe2 since its release and it's his birthday in a couple of days so I thought I would buy him the definitive edition. He doesn't have Steam account or anything like that. How would I gift him the game? Can I just make a new Steam account, buy the game there and give him username and password?

    Thank you for your help.

    Question about regicide fortress.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 12:41 AM PST

    Hi all!

Every pro game I see played on regicide fortress involves canceling part of their own walls at a certain point, often to build something in place of the wall. I don't understand why, though.

Is that to create a more efficient pathing for the units?
