I had the longest aoe2 game ever

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 06:13 AM PST

I'm an aoe2 player since I was 7 years old. Not good or anything but enjoy it so much. I got challenged by my cousin (like 3 years ago) to a black forest match. I got turks and he got Koreans. So we fought for a long time until we only had wood and food left and we lost all our castles. He even did a sneak build and I failed it. Overall the game took 13.6 hours on fast speed and I still can't get over that. We took 2 days to finish it, we saved and loaded the next day and we played on Lan. I ultimately won as my hussar rush was too much for his halbs. (500 pop)

Let's Improve Together! 9 Ways Mid ELO Players Can Improve At AoE2DE

Showerthought: Relics generate gold because they represent churches getting increased tithes.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 08:52 PM PST

Relics were famous religous artifcats purported to be the body parts of saints or famous artifacts. Churches would often use these as a way to bring about pilgrims and ask for more donations from wealthy travelers.

Relics typically start out small and only amass major gold when you store more than once. That monastery, for obvious reasons, tends to be sheltered deep in your main city.

So they generate the most gold as pilgrims flock to your capital, paying tithes and entry fees to your most famous monastery. They're actually a form of trade income.

    New old guy.

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 03:02 PM PST

So I'm almost 40 and I don't know how I've never played this amazing game but here I am. I've finished the Wallace tutorial and the art of war so I think I have the basics down. YT guys are just too fast moving for me to keep up at this point. Where do I even go from here? Campaign helpful? 1v1 the AI and start upping difficulty? Thanks, looking forward to getting better at this game.

Has anyone tampered with Age up requirements?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 08:07 AM PST

I always see people talk about Civ balance or map balance but i never hear anyone talk about the age up requirements as a balancing topic. Below is an example of what i mean just in-case i am not making much sense..

Current DA>FA age requirements is 2 dark age buildings and 500 food. How much would the game change if you needed 650 food in DA>FA and left the rest of the other age's the same.

Do you think something like this would just delay the same strategies already being used or have the chance to shake up the early game?

    What’s your wackiest strategy?

I exclusively play casually with friends, so I'm just looking to have fun here. Winrate notwithstanding, what's the most fun, silly strategy you have ever employed?

Is there a priority list of the things the devs work on?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 01:21 AM PST

I like the fact that devs continue working on updates and fixes, but I don't like the way they do this. I couldn't find something like a priority list of the most wanted improvements.

And yeah for me there are issues that are gamebreaking and I am slowly starting to lose hope that we will have a fully functioning game anytime soon. The main problem is that I don't think the January update actually improved anything concerning Multiplayer. Instead we now cannot see k/d, villagers go idle super often and melee combat is for me worse than before, spectating is crap.

I don't want to whine about my problems, when probably everyone is considering their problem as the most important. But I think we need something like a survey, so the devs know what to work on with higher priority. So if for example 20 000 people want some campaign bug fix, the effort on fixing that will be justified, but if it is 2 people that want it, probably the devs must consider fixing the main voted issues.

How good you should be after 2000 hours playing?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 04:27 AM PST

How good you should be after 2000 hours playing? Expected/realistic ELO if you are a player with average gaming abilities?

With time invested, I think I'm pretty bad.

Currently, I have 1900 h (3 years) played on HD and around 100+ on DE. I played roughly 20 matches on Voobly. Since DE release I play only DE.

My highest ranking on HD was about 1750, before leaving to DE around 1700.

On HD I won against players between 1650 - 1700 in 80 % of the time, between 1700-1750 50 %, above 1750 almost never. Sometimes I lost with ease against sub-1600 players.

I played usually only green Arabia.

DE ranking a little less than 1100. I don't have a favourite civ, I usually go archers. Sometimes I fck up as total noob.

In DE, Arena, I manage to click Castle between 13:20 and 13:30 with 28 pop without Loom (I follow DE Art of War Fast castle tutorial).

Art of war in DE: I manage to get Gold medals in all challenges except in Booming and Defending against a Rush (silver).

How to improve more? Offline practice?

Complete Cicero build orders with at least B?

I follow the most popular streamers regularly (Daut, Hera, Nili, MBL, Memb, T90, T90...).

How good are/were you after so many hours playing?

    Question about implementation of matchmaking

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 04:02 AM PST

I'm wondering if the matchmaking algorithm is either of the three following ways:

    0) does it first let you find an opponent and then randomly choose a map from the not banned maps of both teams.

    1) or does ist first randomly choose a map and then pairs you with an opponent with the same choosen map?

    2) something else

    (1) would lead to a uniform probability of getting one of the not banned maps, but has the disadvantage that you need to que longer and maybe explains the fact that you aren't allowed to ban more then one in Team games.

    (0) gives a a non uniform distribution for the not banned maps, wich is anti proportional to the average amount of bans for each map. But this means not liked maps are less likely to appear. Additionally it would allow to ban more then 1 in Team games. And reduce the waiting time in comparison to (1).

    I would personally think (0) is the better version. But I don't know if it's (2) 11.

Also im wondering if it's not (1) for what reason the ban restriction in TGs exist?

AI not building walls anymore for anyone else?

    Posted: 11 Feb 2020 03:58 AM PST

I think it may be since the last update, none of my custom AIs - or any AI that I've seen - seem to build walls any more. Anyone else experienced this or noticed it if playing against custom AIs?

    Am I crazy???

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 03:10 PM PST

I watch a lot of AOE youtuber content, as I'm sure we all do. Viper especially. And there's a question that's been bothering me that I need an answer for

Right when the game starts, when he's sending his sheep out to scout, he initially selects all four of them. Then he selects them one at a time to give them individual orders. Pretty basic stuff. BUT, I never notice him manually select the individual sheep from the group of four. Like he never seems to use the mouse to click on the sheep's portrait to individually select it. It seems like he uses a hotkey to select one unit from the group. But no matter what I try I can't figure out what that key would be, and the hotkey list doesn't have any button to "select a single unit from a currently selected group." Am I crazy? Is he just really fast with the mouse? Or is there a way to assign a hotkey to be able to select an individual unit from a group you currently have selected?

    How to beat Hard AI?

    Posted: 10 Feb 2020 10:10 AM PST

I got definitive edition a couple of weeks ago, and I am having a lot of trouble beating Hard AI. I've played at least a dozen matches against hard AI and I cannot find a single weak point of this godlike AI. I've tried watching AOE2 youtube videos and I've learned a lot, like luring boars and never keeping my town center idle, but the AI always rushes me with what looks like an army of 30 units just as feudal age starts. I don't understand how it's possible to have an economy and that many units so early in the game, my town center is literally always producing villagers or leveling up, and yet the AI is always able to overwhelm me with an army of archers or skirmishers. I try to build skirmishers to counter archers, but they get killed instantly. And I have no idea what counters skirmishers.

I've been trying everything and I can't kill a fraction of their army with the small defense I have by feudal age. Does anyone have any advice? I literally made this reddit account just for this, I've been so frustrated because Moderate AI is no challenge at all and Hard AI is so hard it feels like it's cheating.
