    Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Mayans vs Persians, and next up is the Koreans vs Saracens!

    Koreans: Tower Defensive and Naval civilization

    • Villagers +3 LoS
    • Stone miners work +20% faster
    • Tower upgrades free (BBT requires Chemistry)
    • Towers +1/+2 range in Castle/Imperial Age
    • Military units (except siege) cost -15% wood
    • TEAM BONUS: Mangonels minimum range reduced
    • Unique Unit: War Wagon (Heavy, expensive, powerful cavalry archer)
    • Unique Unit: Turtle Ship (Slow, expensive, ironclad warship armed with short range cannon)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Panokseon (Turtle Ships move +15% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Shinkichon (Mangonels +1 range)

    Saracens: Camel and Naval civilization

    • Markets cost -100w; trade rate only 5%
    • Transport Ships 2x hp; +5 carry capacity
    • Galleys attack +20% faster
    • Archers (except skirmishers) +1/+2/+3 attack vs buildings per Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Foot archers +1 attack vs buildings
    • Unique Unit: Mameluke (Camel with a short, ranged, melee attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Madrasah (Monks return 33% of their cost when killed)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Zealotry (Camels +30 hp)

    Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • This is a really interesting one imo. Both civs are kind of wonky and used to be varying degrees of bad, but have no received plenty of buffs/nerfs. With that said, for 1v1 land maps, both have minor bonuses to help out their economy and military, eventually getting to very powerful, expensive armies. Which civ do you favor here?
    • On water maps (including Medi since it's in the map pool rn), both civilizations are not normally considered top-tier, but are certainly solid options in their own right. Saracens have excellent galleys as the game goes on, and the market bonus can be especially helpful. Meanwhile, Koreans have a nice wood discount, Turtle Ships, and can be incredibly difficult to raid due to great defensive. To whom would you give the edge here?
    • On your more closed maps like Arena and BF, neither of these civs are lacking when it comes to powerful late game options. Whose deathball do you like better: Korean Halbs, War Wagons, and Onagers, or Saracen Mamelukes, Hussars, Monks, and Siege?

    When playing ranked, isn't it better to just practice like 3 strats and get good at, instead of trying to have a fun normal game?

    I've seen this more and more, some person doing some half-lame thing and wins most of the time, instead of having the more or less normal paced game

    Which leads to, I and others also need to do it, since it's no fun losing all the time

    So trying to have a well rounded start , just like in Starcraft, don't seem to be fun anymore. I don't know if my ELO matchings increased or something(I think it's at 1100 or so now) , but I see this more and more

    How to counter Cuman feudal tower/ram rush

    Yesterday I played 2on2 with my friend on Arena and an opponent rushed me with rams + towers in feudal and completely destroyed my base because I did not know how to react to it. We won the match in the end, but I would like to know how to actually counter this strategy.

    Drush tips?

    I'm trying to improve my drush but I have a few problems. First sometimes I locate enemy a little late. I'm sending my scout immediately after finding 6-8 sheeps and 2 boars but is there any tips for locating enemy? Any thing I should look out for?

    While I'm attacking with militia should I make them stand ground? Because my macro is pretty bad so sometimes they run into TC fire

    Dear AOE 2 DE devs, please let us choose which servers to queue on.

    Leave it on all servers by default, but let us remove the servers we don't want to play on. I'm not interested in playing with 400ms ping. Some people can do it, I can't. I'm gonna leave the moment I see I'm playing on a server from the other side of the planet.

    Hidden Cup 3 Predictions

    Super excited for this one, Hidden Cup is my favorite tournament by far. What do you guys predict for results?

    Winner: Hera over TheViper

    I feel like Hera has been practicing the hell out of the meta lately, and has changed his approach to a much more Viper-like conservative play style. I'm rooting for him for sure to dethrone Viper in a major tournament. His macro has improved a ton and still some of the best micro in the game.

    Cuman Feudal rush in arena

    any tips on countering this? i always go for a forward castle on arena and try to end the game on castle but last night i got rushed by rams and towers and didn't had anything to defend.

    i managed to build a castle but my economy was so disrupted that it was gg by the time i had to deny towers with vills.

    is maa a valid counter unit to this or i should scout more and try to kill the incoming vills and deny the forward siege workshop?

    Giving trample damage to elite elephant archer

    What if elite elefant archer dealed trample damage when firing at melee range?

    Every other elite elephant unit deals trample damage (except elite ballista elephant, but their bolts can pass through units). This would make them better against halberdiers, but they still would have a lot of counters

    The problem is that no range unit it deals trample damage, so maybe this is hard to code

    Graphics glitch, black screen flickering

    Hi there chaps, recently got DE, screen has this odd black flickering issue. Turned Vsync of which helped but it's still happening every few seconds ingame.

    Not unplayable but quite distracting. Have searched but couldn't see a resolution, any ideas? Thanks all!

    Incorporate Tournament Maps in Ranked?

    I feel it would be interesting if the ranked map pool for AOE2 used popular maps from tournaments like NAC3 or HC3. Tournament maps are often balanced to be fair for both players. They also allow for a wide variety of play-styles and strategy which is why they stay interesting to pros and viewers alike.

    So unlike Alpine Lakes which can be unfair or Black Forest which can be slow we'd include maps such as Cross, Cup, Bay, and other fan favorites. I wonder too if more players knew of these maps would their interest increase for tournaments? Since they've played the map themselves they might have more interest watching their favorite player battle on the same map.

    Curious if anyone else thinks this is a good idea? Would you like to see tournament maps included in ranked?
