    Balancing that still needs done

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 06:45 AM PDT

Awhile back I made a post about updates that need to be made. Some of my points have been addressed such as weaknesses in the south east Asia civs. Others like my issues with the saracens team bonus or oragan gun yall changed my mind on. However the more I play a few things poke out to me so here they are and tell me what you think? If these need updates or I am doing something wrong.
Indians- elephant archer needs a buff. I don't see the point in not using mass hand cannons or archers for the price instead. Some ideas firing faster, more range, making them work like the Bulgarian UU and a archer drops after the elephants death. They don't seem to be good in castle drops because of their weakness to spears and skirms. If they are behind your advancing force the extra health is not needed. More units firing would be more effective not only for your main force but if they are attacked from the side with calvary or halbs mass archers would handle that much better. There needs to be something to compensate for the price or reduce the price.

I would suggest the Inca team bonus be that mills build 25% faster in feudal or they could just do 10% faster. Could do a free mill upgrade instead.

Step Lancers. I'm not so sure on this one but I think they need a buff. I know they where OP before and should mainly be used in choke points but they seem way to weak to archers to be used in choke points. Anyone using them effectively? Feel like 1 more PA would go a long way. Or maybe a bonus vs something idk.

Also goths need a eco bonus. Nothing crazy but they feel weak until imperial.

DAE think the new korean team bonus is more of a nuisance than a bonus

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 04:49 AM PDT

Sure the old bonus was way too good for a team bonus but I feel the new bonus is just terrible, I've had so many times where the onagers kill my own units or even the onagers themselves

We created a site that shows civ win and pick rates for DE

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 11:08 AM PDT

aoe-tc.com shows win and pick rates for all civs, using ranked 1v1 games from the latest patch. We also have data for different rating categories and per map, so that's coming soon ;).

You may find the results very surprising. According to our data, Goths may be considered top tier, while the Chinese are lagging behind (their results do improve in higher level games, though).

Hope you like it! If you have any feedback, please don't hesitate to let us know.

EDIT: Allright, ELO filters are in! You can now filter between ELO -1000, 1000 - 1600 and 1600+.

Tips to manage eco or boom better in castle/imperial age on open maps? (DE ~1350 rated)

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 03:48 AM PDT

fwiw: I am DE rated between 1300-1400.

Does anyone have any tips on how to manage economy better in castle age or imperial age? Currently I win most my games from an extended 1 TC push, and if I go to 2-3 TCs, I've usually already pretty much won the game. I'm comfortable with most build orders, but obviously they generally stop in late feudal/castle.

Most of the pros recommend usually going 2-3 TC as soon as you hit Castle, but if I do that, I usually find my opponent either i) stays on 1 tc and roflstomps my main base with knights/archer and seige or ii) outbooms me

    Things I struggle with:

    - Keeping villager production constant over ~50+ vills; military and upgrades always seem to get in the way.

    - Balancing eco; it's really common for me to have that 'oh shit i have no x resource' and end up having to move loads of vills from one to the other. Are there specific times when people generally start to put more on stone (for a castle) or gold (for imp)?

    - Farms; how many should I have before 'saving' to move up to imp? My imperial times are usually very slow

    - General gameplay rhythm; once I get into castle age I find the game generally gets a bit panicky for me. I remember a long time ago I found a guide where the guy was suggesting a kind of process where you constantly check in an army -> idles -> eco -> scouting cycle, which sounds good, but I could never find it again 11

I'm not terrible at booming on closed maps like, so I definitely think its when I have to start setting up a strong Castle/Imp economy and manage military that I fall flat.

    Cheers for any advice!

Can't see any lobby games since update?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:37 AM PDT

Can anyone help me with this? Is anyone having the same problem? Since yesterday I haven't been able to find any games in the unranked lobby. Nothing shows up. Is anyone else having this issue? I saw that yesterday AoE tweeted that some people were having multiplayer problems but on my end that issue still hasn't been fixed. Any advice would be much appreciated

    Not rushing the ai

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:27 AM PDT

How do you guys beat the ai besides rushing? If i let it boom, i just cant outmicro his spam of mixed pike/skirm/siege. Rushing usually works fine but if my first attack fails (or im not in the mood for rushing) i cannot handle it.

Adding common mods to Wiki page

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 02:33 AM PDT

Hello Mods, can we add the list of common or recommended mods to the wiki page? I see it being asked multiple times, having it as a reference on the wiki would be handy.

I see that the top voted suggestion for the wiki talk thread is the same - https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/7gttv9/discussion_for_the_wiki_page/dqm047v/

If the mods okay this, I request the community to list their preferred mods here - For DE, HD, Voobly, etc. We can collate them and add them to the wiki page.

How many feitorias should I be doing and when?

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 07:39 AM PDT

I have been playing portuguese a lot recently. Usually when I reach imp I do immediately 1 and a bit later other one. Sometimes I stay at 2, other times if I get raided and lose some vils instead of producing more vils again I just do a third feitoria. However I my decision making is 100% random and I have no idea what I am suppose to do in theory. Thanks!

    Boar Clusters

    Posted: 24 Apr 2020 05:42 AM PDT

Black Forest often has groups of 3 or so boars scattered around away from the TC. Are these worth going after, either with a single villager to lure or sending 4-5 out to get a mill? Would Berber/Mongol/Goth/Japanese make a difference either way?

Noobie about to partake in 4-5 FFA with other noobies! Need advice (please!)

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 06:29 PM PDT

Hey folks, nooblet here! I've played AoE2 on and off for years since it first came out, but have only recently started looking at improving in a competitive way.

So tonight I'm having a game with 3-4 friends - who, as far as I know, are about that same skill level (have only learnt the game by playing it, not looking up tips or build orders or anything) - so theoretically I should be fine. But I really want to win! :-P

I'm thinking I'll have to be more defensive given the FFA nature - I can't sleep on the resources, for sure, but I think harassing will be far less effective when I'm only hitting one out of four opponents.

Are the following thoughts on point?

    • Do a typical 22 pop feudal, into archers or spears + fast castle? I'm thinking scouts are less useful without the harass, so archers are better general defense, whereas spears are cheaper and can counter their scouts if they actually decide to harass?
    • Be somewhat aggressive/ambitious with gold and stone around the map? It should prove the difference if everyone turtles a lot, as I expect. Or...
    • Get a strong comp early on to try and take someone out midgame, thus having the chance to claim any resources nearer to them?
    • In terms of civ choice, I love the Brits but given the map size and FFA I really feel like I should go with a cav archer civ - map control and the ability to react, basically. I feel like my options are between Burma for the Arambai, or Spanish for Conquistadors (plus missionaries is nice). Are either of these a clear winner? Also...
    • How important are bombard towers in a 4-5 player FFA? In 1v1s I've been fine just focusing on army instead of super defensive towers, but in this game mode do I need them to help my turtle shell?

Apologies if anything I've asked is super noobie or anything - it's basically my first week of learning competitive stuff. I was a plat player in StarCraft 2 back in the day, but while there are plenty of similarities between the two games, I'm still com ijng to grips with a lot of what competitive AoE2 requires.

    Thanks for any help!

The Honfoglalás campaign finally make me give up

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 07:27 PM PDT

I was playing the campaign in AOE2 on hard since I never finished it 20 years ago, in later campaigns when the AI literally only spam and has no economy, it got annoying but I pushed through. I had quite a few 5+ hours in game time missions but I still had the patience to push through. Have to did suicide missions to kill off part by part of their production builds just to slow them down, fine.

And then I got to Honfoglalás. First few parts are still fine, since you are supposed to lose anyway. And then I got to kill the Bulgars. Like what the fuck is this? Not only does it has like 20+ production buildings, they BUILD MORE and will REBUILD unlike previous missions. So trading army for production buildings does nothing. Bulgars has like 100 villagers and I spend 3 whole hours (real time) doing hide and seek with them, I kill the left side, they rebuild on the left, I kill right side they rebuild on the left. All while they keep spamming units non-stop. The only thing I can do, that I can think of, is find all the stone in the map and build 30 castles that cover the entire area of Bulgars.

After 3 hours of real time high and seek I finally gave up. And guess what? 30 Croba cars stil ltook 15 minutes to kill them off. Like what the fuck is this? No econ spam units was bad enough, this mission even have them rebuild. And you know what? Turns out even AFTER the Bulgars, you have Moravians and have to do it again........

What happens to the creative campaigns early on? Why does every single mission later into the campaign ONLY spamming units? And then they double down and have them use 100 villagers keep running around to rebuild WHILE spamming units. They have 3-5 TC to spam vill to auto rebuild, 20+ production buildings to spam unit, keep running around the map, have no econ. I thought individually micro every single ranged unit was bad enough, and they they double down more and more. I enjoyed the campaigns early on, even the 11 range longbowman micro was annoying. But the later campaigns is really just stop being fun at all even they are well designed story-wise.

Can someone help me find a way to extend wonder timer?

    Posted: 23 Apr 2020 06:52 PM PDT

Long story short: Me and my friends are casual players, and we never play rush and alway use a 35min treaty.

So we basically always play endgame stuff, and alway use wonders. We actually really enjoy wonder defense and invading well defended wonders.

But 300 years (or 400 with huns) is too short. Because wonders are not meant to be played with a no rush/35 min treaty. We want to change the wonder timer to at least 600 years, or 1000. So everyone can have a real shot at giving it all while playing such games.

As I said, we are very casual players and enjoy such games, rush and no treaty is not really the style of us plebs.

Is there a way to change that?

Any other noobs on here looking to practice. Would also appreciate some advice from vets.

I get wrecked before I can even get my economy up and running. Not sure what I'm doing wrong but I could use a bit of practice with similarly skilled players.
