Hera weighing in on what the best unique units are.

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 11:45 PM PDT

One of the players in the group I play with made cards for everyone in our coronavirus 2v2 tournament. They are filled with inside jokes and general hilarity. I love how this game can bring us all joy in these difficult times.

It doesn't even sound like the same game anymore.

Are boats a good investment for a noob like me (explained)

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 03:35 AM PDT

I'm pretty bad at Navy and I don't want to focus on it much either, for now. Given that, should i build boats?

My game goes like this- start Nomad (only NOMAD for this post)- drop a TC and drop a dock immediately. Put vills on wood. I usually have about 15 boats by 20 minutes, after building them somewhat regularly, at which point someone comes and kills all of them. I estimate i get about 1000 food from them (don't know much about rates). I would guess that this is a bad investment because I've basically just swapped wood for food.

Would you have some insight on this? (Please let me kn0w if my numbers and timings don't make sense)

Could we maybe extend the Embarking Distance for transport units?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 07:33 AM PDT

Transport units are things like the Transport Ship, but also things like Rams and Siege Towers. Extending the default embarking distance would help reduce the jostling that makes loading units onto those things a bit of a pain. Currently if you have a bunch of units near them and click to load them, they'll all load instantly. But if you send them from afar as a group they'll start jostling with each other and get in each others' way, forcing you to send them in smaller bunches. A simple fix for this would be to increase the size of the default area at which units load onto transports. It'd also be nice if we could just queue them onto multiple transports so that as soon as one is full they immediately seek out the next - that'd be a godsend for loading units onto Rams especially (which as a side effect may actually make Teutonic Knights more popular, as Rams + TKs is a great combo).

What do you do after the build order is finished?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 02:29 AM PDT

I'm following build orders but they all stop right at castle age so my post-castle boom suffers a little from not having a clear understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing. I know I'm aiming for a 100 vil pop.

I was just playing the Mongols so should it have been 3 TCs 30 on Food, 20 on wood, 20 Trading carts, 15 gold, 15 silver for good eco to build Mangudai and siege?

    I’m a little stupid

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 10:00 PM PDT

Just played a 2 hour game as Italians against goths on Medi, I just couldn't kill him even with full water and I made pretty much everything. Champions, Condotierros, Hussars, but he just wouldn't die and he just spammed Husc and Champ. An hour later and I remember that Hand Cannons exist. 11

Ranked, building my own town center?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 06:44 AM PDT

Played my first ranked game yesterday, and was kinda surpirsed I had to create my own town center. Is this something that changes every season or something like that?

I've looked up some ranked gameplays and they had their towncenters at the start of the game.. Kinda confused lol

    Cataphracts buff idea

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 06:38 AM PDT

So we have this unit that ignores anti-cav damage, but has way worse stats than the paladin at the exchange of doing trample damage.

My take on the buff is not over the unit, but what the technology logistics actually does, what if the technology also made cataphracts available in the stable at a longer training time?

I love playing as Japanese. What are other similar civs I can try?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 02:52 AM PDT

I like early and heavy feudal aggression and Japanese allow me to decide my opening according to opponent civ and map. They can reliably pull off almost all the openings like M@A, scouts, archers, trush. In addition, they also play well on hybrid maps. I guess they fall off as the game goes late and don't have real answers to hussar raids other than towering up your base. Why aren't they more highly rated in 1v1s? Are there "similar" but better civs?

Are the Chinese similar but better?

I'm a casual player who just plays late-game AI matches and I think I've finally found the best Civ for that type of play style

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 08:40 AM PDT

I only play against the AI and have gone from consistently beating the AI on easy, medium, and most recently hard. I used to have to wall up and castle but don't feel like I need to anymore. I usually boom and play for huge late game battles (which the AI isn't amazing at). I've toyed around with a bunch of Civs (Hun, Mongols, Magyars, Celts, Britons,) but have found that the Mayans are my favorite. Between the Plumed Archer and the Eagle Warrior they can take down almost any army and DEMOLISH economies when raiding.

Curious to hear other's thoughts on favorite civs for similar play styles

    Color Bug in MP

No matter the color I choose, I always end up purple. Has it happened to you? I even got the same color as my rival. It was frustrating.

How to beat scouts - Knights when going archers?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 08:21 AM PDT

It seems every time I try this the scouts pick off my archers and knights beat my crossbows and them I am left dying to just knights. I try to mix in some spears also but the cavalry just run away and fight in other places. Is this just a bad matchup. I see pros go archers a lot and they never seem to get hit by 5 or 6 knights and Im not sure where I am going wrong.

    Thanks!

What are the best flank & pocket civs for each map type?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 07:54 AM PDT

Which civ would improve the most if they swapped ONE of their UT's with another civ?

    Posted: 15 Apr 2020 06:12 PM PDT

Inspired by the earlier post about which UU's are stronger in other civs, what civs would benefit the most from getting rid of one of their UT's and gaining one from another civ? The tech you get rid of must be from the same age as the tech you gain.

Off the top of my head:

    • Huns become way better when you swap out Atheism for anything that benefits Cavalry or Cav Archers; specifically, Farimba (+5 attack to Cavalry) seems like it would be very strong with Huns. You could also swap out Marauders for Chivalry (Stables work faster), Silk Armor (+1 Pierce for Scout Cav / Cav Archers), or Sipahi (Cheaper Cav Archers). Or you could give them Nomads, because why not.
    • Giving Vikings Garland Wars (Infantry +4 attack) over Berserkergang givs them super infantry with extra HP, extra Attack, and an attack bonus vs Cavalry.
    • Anarchy is interesting - if it works on another civ and allows them to create Huskarls out of their Barracks, you could give it to civs like Aztecs or Bulgarians for some cheese.
    • Giving Mongols Kasbah instead of Nomads lets them make Mangudai faster. Alternatively, if Mangudai count as Cavalry Archers, they could get Sipahi, Silk Armor, or Steppe Husbandry to make their Mangudai even better.

    Ranked queue map selection

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 06:18 AM PDT

Is there any algorythm behind what maps are selected when qeueing in ranked?

I so often get the same maps multiple times(three or more) after each other, that it at least feels like this being non random.

Since you can ban maps I would assume, maybe most other people just have banned other maps than me so from the maps I didn't ban this map is the one the fewest people ban.
But it seems to be different from day to day. One day its all golden pit, the next arabia. Yesterday was the first time for a week that nomads came up, and then again three times in a row.

I feel like AoE could really benefit from some better map selection, just playing the same map over and over again on that day isnt that fun.

Are hitboxes ever going to get fixed in DE?

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 05:14 AM PDT

DE is so much more clunky. Trying to micro a tower, palisade walls, etc -- is very difficult because the hitboxes are so HUGE. Games like Khans blood where you have to micro the building while units obscure your vision, or trying to right click a tower/vils building a castle are much, much harder. Is it even on the radar? Guess not with pathing still being as it is

Delay in Market whilst the rest of the game runs perfectly fine

    Posted: 16 Apr 2020 12:43 AM PDT

I lost a game because there was like a 10 second delay in selling commodities. You sell food for example - > the gold gets added to your total gold but it takes around 10 seconds to be able to spend it. This has made me lose to a tower rush and I have had this bug before. Is this a known bug?
