The Hardest Scenarios and Campaigns of AOE2

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 02:02 AM PDT

I finally finished going through the campaigns and was curious to see what other people's thoughts were on which are the hardest scenarios of the game. I had a quick look online but most of the posts are based on older versions of the scenarios, so thought I'd share my thoughts and would love to hear what you think.

For the record, it was the first time I played any of the scenarios (except for the William Wallace campaign) and went in blind without looking at any strategy guides or YouTube videos before my first attempt. I wanted to clarify this because I've seen people describe scenarios as 'easy' and then describe their strategy that could have only been done by someone with perfect foreknowledge of the map layout and scenario triggers.

My Four Hardest Scenarios (Hard Difficulty)

Bayinnaung 5: The Old Tiger - For me this is easily the hardest scenario in the game and I find it hard to believe anyone can beat this scenario in the way it was intended on their first try. I tried to do it without clearing out the northern base on my first attempts, and both times I was immediately overwhelmed at sea as soon as the last meditation was finished. I couldn't produce any ships quick enough and that whole base got cannon galleoned. This meant I was only left with the one base and even then I ran out of resources very quickly trying to fight against everyone.

I finally got it on my third time after going after the northern base and the Portuguese first, plus landing my transports immediately in the south. Was still harder than any other scenario, but a lot more achievable. One of my favourite scenarios overall though, a really interesting concept.

Suryavarman 4: Challenging a Thalassocracy - Your ally looks like they're doing okay on the water in the first ~15 minutes, so I went to focus on clearing out my island, and then without warning your enemies combine for a massive naval deathball that obliterates them in seconds. The AI targets your helpless ally relentlessly and as you have to protect them, you're banking on them just holding on long enough to give you time to build a navy and rescue them.

I think the designers did a great job with this, making it seriously challenging but I never felt "fuck me this is literally impossible". Definitely improved my naval game overall too and got me using cannon galleons that aren't often seen in standard games. (Also, u/ShadowCrystallux's video got me over the line on the second attempt if anyone is still struggling)

Honfoglalas (Historical Battles) - Fuck this scenario with a spatula. Nomad vs. Settled is supposed to each have their pros and cons according to the hints, but there is no way in hell anyone can beat this scenario going nomad for any longer than it takes to build a town centre.

On my third attempt I figured this out and got a castle up and the scenario does get easier from there. But instead of ending gracefully, my villagers were harmlessly cutting trees in the south of the map and that triggered green to declare war on me. No warning or mention of this happening in-game that I could find. Cue another hour or two of slogging against an enemy with endless unit production and more than happy to rebuild their buildings.

Awful scenario and has put me off all Hungarians for life.

Dracuala 3: The Breathe of the Dragon - A really tricky scenario where if you follow the suggested path, you'll be mercilessly attacked by four very tough enemies (and a weak one for good measure) from four different directions, with your castle seemingly placed to be as ineffective as possible. The other thing is that it comes out of nowhere after an easy first two scenarios.

On subsequent attempts it's obviously a lot easier (delete castle foundation/ attack green and yellow or yellow and teal prior to taking the city), but I'd love to see someone beat this on their first try.

Any others that people really struggled with?

Just had my first infantary vs infantary game

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 04:26 AM PDT

It's the dream. One of the coolest battles I've had, mass of berserks and halbs and some champs and cavalier vs mass of champs with Druzhina and couple of cavaliers and halbs.

Really didn't know who'd win the engage since he had more units altough I had a Castle nearby, I barely won that battle as Slavs. He resigned just as I made the switch to scorpions and was about to make the final push, he was probably out of gold since I had map control.

Custom nomad maps, or other maps where you choose TC starting location?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 06:09 AM PDT

I love nomad vs AI but most of the time, the game generates a boring map for nomad, usually in the pattern of a "doughnut" of land with an outside ring of water and an inside pool which are not connected. Here and there I get some really cool and interesting variations of that but 90% of my games are like this.

Is there some way to combine MegaRandom with Nomad? Or are there other maps/scenarios I can download (or are in the game) that I can play where I get to migrate and choose my TC location?

    Thanks

Players resigning based solely on score difference

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:37 AM PDT

Had this happen to me a few times now. My opponent resigned based solely on score difference and before any meaningful encounter in ranked 1v1 games. They stated their reason after the game ended. The difference wasn't even that big and on my level (ELO 900), all games could have still gone either way IMO.

I don't really have a solution but it's not fun to win a game after 15 minutes just because I scouted the map better and had a few more vills.

Building units outside of my civ bonuses?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 06:42 AM PDT

I tend to play the Celts a lot, and because their bonuses tend to cater to infantry and siege so much, I tend to never make archers. I'll make elite skirms, yes, to counter enemy archers. And paladins to counter enemy siege (though not as often). How wise is it to build outside of your civ's bonuses? I don't want to waste a ton of resources researching archer techs when I could be making more trebuchets.

Is there a sound when he enters the cheat codes? Should a look or listen for something in particular?

    Give picking random more advantage

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 07:41 AM PDT

Lately it seems everyone is playing a few select civs and everything else is out of favor. I feel like if you pick random you opponent shouldn't be able to see your civ pick in loading. Make him feel uncertain about what he will play against. I feel that this may slightly encourage random play without making it unfair

    Dealing with wannabe Fatslobs

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 06:34 AM PDT

Hi all- I've been losing games to very defensive players on open maps- mini Fatslobs who want to turn the map into an Arena game.

They double wall/ house wall and boom - when I manage to break in and raid - I lose my units to the extra TCs and Castles they have built. The most effective measure I found has been to wall myself far forward and try squeeze them in a corner and hope my macro is better than theirs, if you can't beat them join them but I don't want to join them!

What's the solution- should I race to Imp for Trebs ASAP or fight harder with mangoes and rams in Castle? Any tips from the community are appreciated!

PS: thanks for all the great tips- will try to implement next time out!

    Trouble with eliminating Civs

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 05:18 AM PDT

So I've just started the first Barbarossa mission, and I went to destroy the Burgundy civ.

Wiped them out, all units and buildings I could find. But I've not removed them from the game. I've been scouring the map for about 20 mins, yet they still show a score of 4114/7500. Does this mean they've re setup another base somewhere?

I'm going for the achievement by winning by destroying every unit (if I just went for relics I wouldn't really mind), but its starting to bug me. I don't want to move onto the next civ if I've let this one regrow.

    1 monitor definitive edition

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 05:14 AM PDT

So I have two monitors, AoE is always starting on my main one. Theres like no "border" between the monitors so my mouse can freely move to the other monitor. I hope someone understands what I mean.

Is there a way to fix this, like running the game on one monitor? Couldnt find an option inside the game itself

    I want to get better

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 07:27 PM PDT

Hello folks I play age 2 since 2005, but i never won a random map past the moderate level In the original one i did all the campaigns on hard (1+ hours of gameplay, never a quick one),and used to won a match here and there, but nowadays i lost evey time i play vs the ai on the HD version, and i am getting very frustrated. So, do you guys have tips and hints for me? I want to be good in the game of my childhood

Okay, fine, I'll learn build orders. Where do I go?

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 01:23 AM PDT

So I've been playing on and off for a few months now, and never play ranked. My friend who does is about equally matched with me, he's probably a bit better under pressure, and he's 1490 on Team ranked- which puts me at about 1300 or higher, I'd say.

Thing is, I have an aversion to playing the game like it's a science. I don't like the idea of build orders, where you memorize your plays for the first 15 minutes of the game so you can go for a pre-chosen strat, and go for the win. I like improvising and I get a major dopamine rush out of beating players with a faster castle timing in eco anyway, or defending against an unexpected man at arms rush. However, I do want to get better, and literally everyone on Reddit ever has said that knowing a few build orders is an absolute necessity to be a properly good player.

So here's my question- where does one go to learn build orders? Vids on youtube? Are there arcane diagrams hidden away in the throughs of internet forums somewhere? Please help a beginning player get better at the game :)

Too afraid to ever play again

    Posted: 25 Apr 2020 02:06 PM PDT

Now even single player 1v1 replays don't work.

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:24 AM PDT

1v1 against AI. Replays end after about 14-16 minutes. Try it out.

The replay system has basically become useless now.

    Proof: Replay file download

Game lasted about 40-50 mins I think.

Pick from a custom pool of civs (semi-random)

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:18 AM PDT

It's like a half random civ idea. Once you can see what map you are playing, I think it would be cool if you could click any number of civs (could be 2, could be 30) that the game would randomly pick for you. Pretty much to avoid getting bad civs on maps where they don't thrive, but would still increase the variety. I would use this all the time.

For example on Arabia, I could click Mayans, Chinese, persians, aztecs, britons, huns, mongols, and the game would randomly pick from one of those. Whereas on Islands I could pick vikings, malay, italians, japanese, koreans and it would randomly pick from those (sorry if you don't agree with the civs, not the point of this post) .

I am not sure if I am doing a good idea of explaining this or not.

aoe2HD in Proton 5.0-6 issues with text labels

aoe2HD in Proton 5.0-6 issues with text labels

Hi, I'm going nuts trying to solve an issue with text labels in aoe2HD using Proton 5.0-6.

Somehow the text labels are tabulated so I cannot see the stats above the minimap correctly.

Sometimes it fixes itself, mostly on single player. On multi-player it works always like shown in the image.

    I've tried already:

    -Reintalling Steam and AOE2HD

    -Installing corefonts with winetricks

    -Using previous versions of Proton

-Copying fonts from AOE2HD folder to windows/Fonts, both in Proton PREFIX as well as in AOE2H prefix.

    -Changing DPI config using winecfg

    -Using OLD_SCHOOL startup parameter

-Apparently it works ok with other languages but not with English

    Ran out of ideas.

    Thanks!

    Why hunt/draw boar

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 08:15 AM PDT

I recently started playing AoE2 again (for the first time since middle school) and found it just as good as I remember. But watching high-level competitive matches, and seeing other guides, have seen everyone recommend that after butchering your sheep everyone suggests drawing a boar. Why would you do that rather than just build a mill and get the berries?

And after the first 15 villagers, why would you ever burn time hunting instead of jut farming?

Winrates for Portugese, Koreans, Magyars, Ethiopians suggest they urgently need buffs

    Posted: 26 Apr 2020 07:58 AM PDT

Here are post 36202 DE winrates. https://www.aoe-tc.com/high

The data shows that across the board, these four civilizations(Portugese, Koreans, Magyars, Ethiopians) are the worst or close to the worst, and not many are raising the issue of buffing them to make them a little more appealing. Their winrates are as terrible as less than 44%, for pros as well as beginners (38% for Portugese).

Urgent buffs are needed to Organ Guns, Turtle Ships, Shotels, Cornivian Army tech and of course buffs to the Koreans, Portugese, Magyars, Ethiopians civ bonuses. I believe their Bonuses, UU and UTs could be made stronger for making them viable civs, rather than giving them access to more units(thereby reducing their uniqueness).

    Portugese :

    1. -25% Gold on all units, -15% evidently too weak ever since their release.
    2. Organ Guns : +2 (Elite +4) Attack, to make them on slightly better than Jannisaries.

    Koreans :

    1. -20% Wood on all non-siege units, same reason as portugese, too weak discount right now, as is evident from universally bad winrates.
    2. Turtle Ships : Cost down to 150W 150G from 180W 180G : Overpriced unit on a weak civ.

    Magyars :

    1. Villagers have +1 attack (could be fun, compensates for fewer wolves and general anemia/weakness of this Civ)
    2. Cornivian Army : Cost to 200F 150G down from 200F 300G considering it doesnt add any combat value to units. Right now, it is only mathematically worth it if the player makes more than 35 Huszars.

Ethiopians : Shotel Warrior cost 40F 30G instead of 50F 35G . Virtually unseen unit.

Also adding another weak civ buff to consider

Turks : Free Ballistics (no need to give them better trash, they could be made even better at what they're supposed to do, Cav archers or Fast Imp or More Gunpowder by saving some gold here! Their gold piles would last a bit longer)

This would also fit their historical theme of getting technologies through trade with the east and make them a Castle/Early Imp POWER PUNCH CIV!
