how do i win in ranked??

    Please devs act promptly!

    Posted: 19 May 2020 03:27 AM PDT

FE has been delivering patches, fixes and civs buffs/nerfs on a regular basis since day one and I am totally glad about it, giving me constantly new inputs to keep on playing.

But please devs do not wait several weeks for the next update. The state of the game since the last patch is barely acceptable, at least for me.

Exploits, the Malay bug, lag and crashes in multiplayer, bad pathing. The number of posts concerning bugs has been rising recently.

Please keep up with the good work but do not let these problems damage the community on the long run.

    We need 1 more Civ!

    Posted: 19 May 2020 07:12 AM PDT

That empty space under the Vikings when you choose a civ to play triggers my OCD.

Personally the new Civ i would like to take that spot would be the Andalusians. Basically the Moors. Which i also get triggered when i see the Moors being depicted by the Saracens in the El Cid Campaign. They should be their own Civ.

Andalusians should be their own Civ. Hell, they even formed their own Caliphate separate from the one in Baghdad to showcase how different they were.

Another option could be the Normans since i want Norman Lancers as a unique unit.

Has anyone found that the AI is better now?

    Posted: 19 May 2020 07:17 AM PDT

We play against AI quite a bit. We used to easily handle 5 of us vs 3 extreme AI, but since the latest update we get absolutely rolled by even the hardest AI. Yesterday we lost a 3v4 against hard. Their base building was insane, their army composition was perfect, and they had like double the resources as us by early imperial. On hard! I guess its welcome, because it will force us to play more intelligently and probably aggressively. But we kind of liked the 300+ population, enormous imperial age slug-outs. Anyway, is this real or did we all just have our faculties critically impaired?

I can't see the head bar properly on Aoe2 DE. I'm running on a Intel I5 computer, HD graphics 4000, 6gb ram. I tried on all graphic settings.

    Help with Mongols mid game

    Posted: 19 May 2020 09:02 AM PDT

I'm relatively new to AOE2, I've played for around a week (although I used to play when I was younger.) I play mainly Mongols and I tend to do pretty good if the game lasts to Imperial age, but I struggle when my opponent rushes me in Feudal or Castle age. I usually try to go either scouts or archers into Mangudai but I never seem to get it quite right. Can y'all give me some tips on the build orders and mid game of the Mongols? Thanks!

Just saw Viper playing Portuguese the other day.

All of his arquebus HCs missed the crossbows and died, every single shot, then someone pointed out that Arquebus doesnt do anything for actual accuracy, its only helps against units moving sideways.

Kinda pointless with ballistics for such inaccurate units, is it not?

Ofc, the bombard cannons are fantastic, so there is that.

    My AOE2 Definitive Edition experience

    Posted: 18 May 2020 11:05 PM PDT

I have been playing AOE2 since 2004, started on windows 98 pentium 2 computer and last week I purchased AOE2DE and I was blown away. The enhanced video quality and the attention to detail is amazing. If you are still stuck at AOE2 HD I recommend you the upgrade and its not a waste at all If you have childhood memories of AOE2 like me, you'll definitely love it immediately.

AOE2 DE only works on 64 bit computers and it requires better computer performance than AOE2 HD.

Saladin Missions Review [Age of Hard Campaigns, e2]

    Posted: 19 May 2020 06:55 AM PDT

Salad'in is a famous Salad restaurant in Monaco. Lets talk about it.

I have been playing AOE2 since ~2003, and have enjoyed the campaign on all difficulties many times, many years ago. I stopped playing soon after the African Kingdoms release, so I thought: What better way to start playing again than to do all the campaigns again on Hard? That's a good idea, riiight?

So here I am. I will share my journey with you through all the campaigns, from the original The Age of Kings ones to the most recent DE campaigns, including the Achievements.

I will give a score on Fun, First attempt difficulty (since I forgot everything about the missions), and Repeat difficulty (knowing what strategy to use to win).

Here is a Google Spreadsheet where I will log all the campaigns, scores, reviews, and a few additional elements.

    An Arabian Knight

    • Fun: 4/10
    • First attempt: 3/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 2/10
    • Base building? No

Is this hard difficulty? Where are the OP longbows and monk micro from Jeanne d'Arc?

You steamroll all the way until the end, where you are surprised by tons of pikemen that counter your camels. But it isn't really important, since your siege ram can destroy the TC anyway.

    Lord of Arabia

    • Fun: 3/10
    • First attempt: 7/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 7/10
    • Base building? Yes

It is paramount to quickly get to castle to start producing cavalry to take out Teal. Red is not a problem, as they are not offensive and have just a few archers/knights.

However, who in the World of Empires thought it was a good idea to pop cap us at 100 and castle age against GALLEONS, FAST FIRES AND PALADINS?!! Just make a few hundred pikemen and jam 15 rams in a transport 3 or 4 times to raid blue island. It is not fun, there are no strategies possible against a technologically OP enemy.

    The Horns of Hattin

    • Fun: 6/10
    • First attempt: 8/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 6/10
    • Base building? Yes

No castles, nor towers, walls, or time to prepare. Only pikey boys and ranged pikey bois.

Focus all your attention on your northern base: the one in the south is as good as dead.

When blue attacks, try to lure the units to your town center, and hope for the best.

I suggest to make light cavalry to take out Red with a ram or two, then switch to archers for the Teuton enemy.

    The Siege of Jerusalem

    • Fun: 8/10
    • First attempt: 5/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 5/10
    • Base building? Yes

When you hear "Castle Age" and "1,000 resources", you must think "3 TC"! Get quickly to 50ish villagers and build a castle to defend your 2-3 tcs. In this mission, arbalests + trebs rules.

You can practice your raiding skills on orange and yellow, and they are pretty much out of the game. If you prefer to play defensive, self-isolate your mamelukes in the castle and make them snipe the rams if an enemy sends them.

    Jihad!

    • Fun: 7/10
    • First attempt: 8/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 6/10
    • Base building? Yes

NIGHTMARES CAME BACK when I saw the initial base. Even if I forgot the mission, I certainly did not forget the frustration associated.

If you quickly put 3 villagers on stone and the rest on the woodline next to the stone, you can build a castle on the little hill in the trade route path. Drop a TC next to it, and your villagers will be safe to chop wood and to farm. As before, mameluke against rams/trebs, and archers to defeat the opponents.

The Lion and the Demon *

    • Fun: 7/10
    • First attempt: 7/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 7/10
    • Base building? Yes

Bombards, hero trebs, mangonels, tons of rams, hand cannons, teutonic knights, and archers.

Garrison 5 archers in your south tower (for genoese ships), and build a castle near the northern tower next to your walls.

You have to quickly boom up to gain constant and reliable food production to pump out hussars, as they are the only units that can deal with all the siege and ranged units. Mameluke are too expensive and too slow to mass.

    Achievements

Offense Is the Best Defense \* (Defeat all opponents before constructing a Wonder in the sixth Saladin mission "The Lion and the Demon").

This is as hard as it sounds. Defend until you have a great food production to mass hussars (to take out siege and archers), and enough gold for a few mamelukes (for the paladins), few hand cannonneers/archers (for the teutonic knights), and 2-3 trebs. Start to kill the enemies from east to west (grey -> red -> etc). Take EXTRA CARE in killing all villagers and in having vision on all the map (outposts or patrolling cavalry), as the enemies will continuously try to make new TCs. They will not resign easily. The elite elephants you get from your Persian Ally are never gonna.

I hope that you appreciated this little write-up of the second AOE2 campaign. I enjoyed writing it, and look forward to the next mission: Barbarossa. I will post it in the next few days. Here is the spreadsheet again.

Please let me know if you like this format, I would greatly appreciate it!

Cheater in ranked game (1v4 comeback with mass elephants)

Cheater in ranked game (1v4 comeback with mass elephants)

    Hey!

tl;dr: a massive cheater with unlimited resources and population beat us 1v4, the replay is below

So I just played this black forest ranked 4v4 (low elo, 1250-1300). It started off quite normal, my team did quite well and they pushed three enemies into resigning. It was now a 4v1 and the last remaining enemy (my neighbour) didn't seem very strong... it was only a matter of time before he resigned or was defeated.

Suddenly, he sends all his troops to me. He breaks in with elephants + scorpions, destroys my small army, and absolutely erases my base. "Well, he's going out with a bang, but my mates will deal with him". While he raids me, my mates raid his base. I was so sure we'd win that I didn't even bother sending my villagers away to start a new base.

Then he moves on to attack my nearby ally. At this point he has no base and he's not gathering resources. "I guess his 3 mates sent him a ton of resources before resigning". He built several castles and other buildings where my base was, so he could keep producing his army. Then my nearby ally's base gets absolutely destroyed. We start worrying, this dude may 1v4 us and it's truly embarrassing.

My 2 allies that still had a base did the right thing... halbs and monks, right? they converted many elephants and killed tens of them. But the elephants kept coming, and after a big struggle my mates didn't really have many more resources... or faith. We started flaming each other... the Goth player didn't mass produce halbs, you idiots assumed it was won and got overconfident, etc.

We had just been humilliated... was it a pro player smurfing? It was just unbelievable, it didn't seem real. But then we realized it: it wasn't real, it was IMPOSSIBLE he had built such an army. He had dropped like 10 castles in each of our bases, and his elephants truly seemed to be more than 200. Just before the cheater killed the last of our units, he forfeited, and thus we unexpectedly won. We stayed ingame for a while, talking about what had just happened. Turns out the dude had over 900 units by the end of the game.

The replay is right below, I hope the file works. He (dark blue) starts off quite normal, with some odd farms... but at some points his resources go into negative numbers and he just goes wild. Hope you enjoy.

AOE2 HD mods not visible in steam

    Posted: 19 May 2020 08:43 AM PDT

    Hi,

I am new to steam and have aoe2hd. But when I go to steam workshop I do not see any mods...it's a blank screen. Is it blank because I do not have any mods installed? I thought the mods will be available right off the shelf.

I have never installed mods, so a detailed explanation with links to install mods would be appreciated.

    Just played a Cheater

    Posted: 18 May 2020 10:03 AM PDT

I honestly am out of words because my mates and I (1800K Elo) just played against a blatant cheater in match making. A 25 minute game and this guy has over 8K Gold collected, 3K stone collected and 10K food and wood. We watched the replay back and it seems that his villagers gather resources at an alarming rate since he was sitting on 2K food just after reaching Feudal age and 5K food clicking up to Castle age whilst making 15 scouts all fully upgraded. Before I even reached Castle age after pressuring my flank with archers this guy had already built 3 castles and was on 4 TC's fully booming.

It's good that AOE is becoming increasingly popular with the player and fan base increasing exponentially, but along with a larger following comes the introduction of cheat programs. The username of both the cheaters that we encountered in the same game were: 'tiantiantian' and 'Devil'. Both were Chinese users.

Edit: Providing a link to the VOD of our game for proof
