Campagins Review! Joan of Arc Missions, Hard diff, e1

    Posted: 17 May 2020 06:26 AM PDT

I have been playing AOE2 since ~2003, and have enjoyed the campaign on all difficulties many times, many years ago. I stopped playing soon after the African Kingdoms release, so I thought: What better way to start playing again than to do all the campaigns again on Hard? That's a good idea, riiight?

So here I am. I will share my journey with you through all the campaigns, from the original The Age of Kings ones to the most recent DE campaigns, including the Achievements.

I will give a score on Fun, Initial difficulty (since I forgot everything about the missions), and Repeat difficulty (knowing what strategy to use to win).

Here is a Google Spreadsheet where I will log all the campaigns, scores, reviews, and a few additional elements.

Lets get started with Jeanne d'Arc missions (Joan of Arc).

    An Unlikely Messiah

    • Fun: 4/10
    • First attempt: 2/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 1/10
    • Base building? No

First Escort Mission! Our revolutionary damsel doesn't yet have her T-45 Power armor, so she needs our protection to get to Chinon. Jean de Metz accent is a solid 5/7 depiction of French high schoolers reading english texts.\ Use a knight to keep the purple gate open for your army when an enemy goes through.\ There is a shortcut bang on the middle of the map when you take the transport ship.

    The Maid of Orléans

    • Fun: 3/10
    • First attempt: 3/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 2/10
    • Base building? Yes

Pre-existing walls and enough stone for a castle in the north of your base, a few X-bows in the south towers, and that's all you need for defense.\ Get to castle, drop 2 TC in the west of your base near the woodline & gold, and pump some longswordsmen to attack the castle south of your base. It's a suicide mission, but it gets the job done. Your swordy bois are only paid 20 bucks anyway.

    The Cleansing of the Loire

    • Fun: 6/10
    • First attempt: 5/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 3/10
    • Base building? Yes

Take La Hire in your raids. The blood on his sword is almost dry.\ Make your first town center near some stone and wood, and make a castle as soon as you can. A castle with a few light cav or pikey bois will defend against any enemy forces.\ I recommend making archers to counter the British infantry, and rams to destroy the castles.\ Pretty straightforward mission, as you are not constantly under pressure.

    The Rising

    • Fun: 6/10
    • First attempt: 5/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 3/10
    • Base building? Yes

You unlocked Imperial Age!\ The objective is to destroy 3 enemy TC, and each enemy becomes your ally once their TC is down. You can either rush the TC with infantry/paladins or protect a treb with the toothpick guys.\ No real challenge in defending your base.\ This mission is great to train yourself to raid the enemy eco with 2-3 knights!

    The Siege of Paris

    • Fun: 4/10
    • First attempt: 7/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 4/10
    • Base building? No

Oh the frustration. Why did I lose this time? Lady is alive, I have 8 rescuees... What happened?!\ You have 2 routes: follow the southern wall until a castle and enter the base (easier), or enter from the east (more enemies). Take you time and clear the way with the boom boom dudes, and snipe the mangonels with your cavalry. You can breach the northern wall for a shortcut to Paris.\ This mission is good for testing your Micro skills, and best for testing your patience.

    A Perfect Martyr

    • Fun: 7/10
    • First attempt: 8/10
    • Repeat difficulty: 4/10
    • Base building? Yes

Where is Jeanne?! Oh right, she imitated the Flaming Camel.\ Try 1-2: Got annihilated. Was slow to build, only defended, was afraid to push out.\ Try 3: Quickly took out first purple base, destroyed Orange in the north, and used the initial range units with the bombard to take out Purple in the south.\ Build base, get to imp, pump out 30ish paladins, and push into red base with trebs. Easy with strats, hard when blind.

    Achievements

None for Jeanne d'Arc missions. However, I unlocked "Castle of Doubt", where you get an unfinished castle destroyed when it's more than 95% built. I chuckled when I got it, as I read "Castle of Daut".

I hope that you appreciated this little write-up of the first AOE2 campaign. I enjoyed writing it, and look forward to the next mission: Saladin. I will post it in the next few days. Here is the spreadsheet again.

Please let me know if you like this format, I would greatly appreciate it!

Crushed and Surrounded by.... Town Halls?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 06:09 AM PDT

    Hi guys.

Pretty new to playing this game online. Just fought a mongol enemy and he beat me without producing a single military unit until he made a couple of trebs after hitting imperial. I save my replays to try figure out where losses come from and I can't figure this one out or what my counter play would be.

I raided with M@A early and transitioned to xbows and did what I normally consider reasonable damage to gain an economic edge but not this time. He built town halls everywhere and I couldn't kill enough villagers to stop him doing anything. The xbows did solid work but when he hit castle a castle pushed me back. At this point he started taking over the map with town halls. I hit imperial just after him but at this point he had town halls across the entire map and I was basically surrounded by them. He was gracious enough to use some trebs to break my castles but he could probably have slaughtered me with his legion of villagers.

In hindsight I probably needed some mobile units able to tank a town hall and kill it but does this strategy have a name so I can research some counter play?

At the end of the match he had collected double of all the resources compared to me and he didn't kill a single villager of mine.... so I'm definitely looking for some insight. I clearly was out macrod that's for sure!

If you could switch any two civ bonuses with eachother, what would you choose?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 07:18 AM PDT

I could definitely see myself having alot of fun with cheaper beafy Frankish knights using the berber discount, Id have to give up cheaper castles for that tho. Or cheaper faster attacking Japanese champs with the goth discount at the cost of their fishing ships. Or ofc long range seige arbs would be nice when ur playing mayans with the briton bonus, but no more extra vil.

Games Won't Start - Requires a Directx 11 Compatible Adapter

    Posted: 17 May 2020 07:50 AM PDT

    Hey Guys,

So I recently just updated my gaming laptop and now aoe2 DE won't run. When I launch I get the following error message.

"Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition minimum specification requires a DirectX 11 compatible display adaptor. This computer does not meet that requirement."

I have the latest windows and DirectX 12 updates installed so not entirely sure what's wrong. I haven't been able to find much online to help either. If anyone has any information this would be really helpful.

    My specs are:

    OS: Windows 10 CPU: Intel i7 - 10750H 12cpu 2.6ghz RAM: 12gb Graphics: Geforce GTX 1650 4gb VRAM

    State of the multiplayer?

    Posted: 17 May 2020 05:00 AM PDT

I haven't played this game since Microsoft shut down the multiplayer back in the mid 00s iirc. I have heard some form of it is back. Have fond childhood memories of playing custom scenarios.

AoE DE. I cant find how to change hotkey for "auto scout"

    Posted: 17 May 2020 04:35 AM PDT

Is there a way to do this? 5 years of having TC mapped to G really screws up my scouting since auto scout is mapped to G as well.

Cant find this option in the settings!

My fan theories about "nomadic" civilizations.

    Posted: 17 May 2020 01:46 AM PDT

Disclaimer: I'm not very good at world history, so correct me if I got anything incorrect.

So these are civilizations that could be considered as "nomadic":

    -Berbers

    -Cumans

    -Goths

    -Huns

    -Magyars

    -Mongols

    -Tatars

Out of these, I would like to think that Berbers, Magyars, Mongols, and Tatars are nomadic civilizations that have eventually settled down and established their own civilizations with Berbers coinciding with Morocco (Berber is one of 2 Morocco's official language), Magyars coinciding with Hungary, Mongols coinciding with Mongolia (duh), and Tatars coinciding with Turkic countries in Central Asia (I think).

Assuming that Imperial Age represents all these 35 civilizations at their primes, I have something to say about Mongols in particular. One of Mongols' unique tech is Nomad, which allows Houses to keep the population even if they're destroyed and their Wonder is the Great Tent of Genghis Khan. My fan theory here is that in-game Imperial Age Mongols represent Mongol Empire at its prime, in which the whole Empire became a civilization with nomadic heritage intact.

And then we have Goths, Huns, and Cumans, all of whom don't seem to exist today. Goths' Wonder is Mausoleum of Theodoric, which was basically built by Theodoric the Goth as his tomb. Here's where my fan theory come into. Given that whatever civilization that Goths have established didn't exactly last long, it DOES kind of make sense that they wouldn't be able to build Stone Walls but are able to research Architect since, if I remember correctly, Goths actually rebuilt some of the destroyed Roman cities. Oddly enough, they also have access to a lot of gunpowder units, which, aside from being added as balance, could also be a nod to Spain and Italy, both of which (especially the former) were known for gunpowder weapons.

But what about Huns? Yeah, remember how I came up with Huns' Villagers being captured Goths and are now working as slaves because how they have Central/Northern European architecture(?) even though they're from Central Asia? That pretty much summarizes my fan theory on Huns. They never really built their own civilization, so it makes sense that their Wonder is a Roman ruin with a lot of plunders - and why they don't build houses. :D

That only leaves Cumans, who are typically associated with Cuman-Kipchak confederation (which explains why their unique unit is Kipchak). Yeah, I don't think they've built an actual civilization either since their Wonder is a ruined Sarkel Fortress, which is partly destroyed and has yurts built within(?) it. My fan theory (if you can call it that way) is that Cumans are basically capturing Central Asian cities by the time they hit Imperial Age, culminating with them capturing Sarkel Fortress.

That's all I have to say. If you want to add anything, feel free to do so. :)

    Britons Longbow special unit

    Posted: 17 May 2020 08:18 AM PDT

What is the best strategy to counter a fully upgraded set of Briton Longbow units? I know the Spanish Galleons have a longer range but they are slower and don't have splash damage.

Do you rush the longbow units with Turkish Calvary? Plus the longbow units make for an excellent defensive force. On the Black Forest map they are almost unstoppable.

Especially since players can harvest lots of wood and sell the extra wood for gold.

Do players turtle until the Imperial Age to counter with gun powder units?
