Number of villager on ressources for constant production

    Hello,

Just wanted to share a little spreadsheet I made. It gives you the number of villagers you should have on each ressource for continuous production of different units (with one building).

    https://preview.redd.it/xcc21oilejz41.png?width=529&format=png&auto=webp&s=8cc1f1a011fe8ac0e426b07746c33168992661cc

It is a summary, so it only shows some units, and only when first available (i.e. knights in castle age). It assumes you have all eco upgrades available at that age and a gathering efficiency of 0.95 for each ressource. For food gathering rate, farming is assumed.

For towers and castle, it assumes you have 4 vils building (which is weird for castles, I agree).

I can share the whole spreadsheet if people are interested, it has UU and all units in every age. Feedback and questions welcome !

    Using Cav. Archers Effectively

    Posted: 18 May 2020 08:19 AM PDT

I'm not new to this game by any stretch of the imagination: I started playing just before the release of AoC in 2001 and then casually for the next couple of years, and then rediscovered the game about 2.5 years ago. While I've always enjoyed watching this game as much as playing it, I have managed to reach about 1100 on the the current ladder.

When I play as, say, Huns, I know the meta is to scout rush and then transition into Cavalry Archers in Castle Age. The issue I have with Cav. Archers is that they seem to require so many upgrades to be effective (Husbandry, Bloodlines, Chemistry, Thumbring, Parthian Tactics, and Ballistics, outside of the normal Blacksmith upgrades) and are difficult to micro correctly. I know at this skill level, players begin microing Cav. Archers more or less correctly, so it's a skill I need to improve on. I seem to have better luck just going knights and concentrating on having the better economy, but ultimately I want to get better, so I know I have to adjust.

For those of you who can pull off a Cav archer army composition or Fast Castle as Spanish into Conqs, what do you prioritize? For instance, I know Husbandry is crucial, but I would assume you still get fletching first. But perhaps as Huns, the move is to skip any blacksmith upgrades for scouts and immediately grab Bloodlines and Husbandry instead. I also know you typically use Scouts as a meat shield, so perhaps not? What order would you typically get the upgrades in? In terms of microing, do you use the Stop hotkey? Attack move? Patrol?

Edit: Updated to include Parthian Tactics, which is also crucial in some situations.

    LAG IN RANKED GAMES.

    Posted: 18 May 2020 05:38 AM PDT

I made a post about this and all the replies were just 'hurr durr works fine for me.'

In teams games things are generally ok, but fully half of my 1v1s are really choppy, to the point where microing siege and archers and really anything else is basically impossible. Usually when I ask my opponent where he is from in laggy games, he responds SA or Europe (I live in NA.)

Please tell me what I can do or how I can restrict who I play with so that this doesn't happen. Or at least give me the option to back out of laggy games without taking a loss. I don't understand why in a game where lag can totally cripple your ability to do anything I can be thrown into games where lag is all but guaranteed.

What colour do you prefer to play as?

I'm boring so I always use the default blue, but every time I'm getting ready to launch a naval assault I feel I should picked a different colour.

Is the pool of team game players really this small?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 06:53 AM PDT

We're 3-4 friends playing team games, most of the time we get matched against vastly higher rated players, 400-600 elo higher, we lose 1-7 elo per game but every third game or so we match up against what seems to be even players but they randomly resign 3-4 minutes into the game, giving us 15-20 rating.

This ends up with us never going down in rating, and all our games are either early resigns (dark age) or getting absolutely stomped by teams of 1800 elo players.

It's starting to feel like just a waste of time trying to play team games at all.

Raging at allied AI building in my base!

    Happens every game now.

The other day on hideout, the dude casually builds a TC, castle and barracks right in my base... Here he is, stealing my gold.

Sadly, no taunt to tell him to go the f*** away.

    Question about some civs

    Posted: 18 May 2020 06:08 AM PDT

I'm not SUPER new to AOE, but I'm relatively new with the more competitive side of AOE2. I've watched some videos and learned about some popular strategies (monks and mangonels, knights, mass crossbows, etc.) and I was wondering whether it is possible to categorize the civs in AOE2 into groups depending on what they really want to do (such as if the civ wants to just fuckin go all out and boom or they want to push their early-game advantage and be aggressive). This is a very open-ended question, and I'm completely fine with open-ended answers. I mostly ask this so that I could get a better handle on how the basic meta for certain civs is. Thanks for any help that is provided.
