If Aoe2DE had leagues like Starcraft 2

    Posted: 26 May 2020 02:52 AM PDT

In Starcraft 2 ranked players are not only categorized by their Match Making Rating / MMR (equivalent of elo),but also get placed in a league. The leagues are ultimately not all that meaningful, except for the top league, which in most competitions is used for qualification and seeding. It is however a fun additional motivation to grind on the ladder and to compare yourself to your friends.

Aoe2DE displays a "Rank" on the online profile as well, however it appears to be either meaningless or tied to campaign achievements. I have seen players with 800 elo have the Gold rank as well as 2000+ players, so it doesnt really say anthing. What if however, there was a league system in place such as in SC2? I thought it was a fun idea and frankly the home office doesnt keep me too busy atm, so I decided to see how the league placement would like applying the SC2 distribution onto the Aoe2DE ladder.

Obvioulsy there are severe differences between the two games, a big one being the much larger player base in SC2, another one being the much bigger range or ratings in the SC2 MMR compared to the Aoe2DE elo. I used the distributions of the leagues displayed on this website: https://www.rankedftw.com/stats/leagues/1v1

Using these percentages, this is what we get for AoE2DE:

League Number of Players Elo Range Rank Range %
    Grandmaster 70 1943 - 2256 1 - 70 Top 0,2%
    Master 1248 1460 - 1942 71 - 1318 Next 3,5 %
    Diamond 7941 1152 - 1459 1319 - 9260 Next 22,3 %
    Platinum 8899 1020 - 1151 9261 - 18160 Next 25 %
    Gold 8190 905 - 1019 18161 - 26351 Next 23 %
    Silver 7478 710 - 904 26352 - 33830 Next 21 %
    Bronze 1779 255 - 709 33831 - 35610 Bottom 5%

There was a little bit of NiliMath involved, as I was generous in rounding the percentages. Also the elo ranges are not 100% accurate, because it was difficult to actually find a player based on rank rather than elo. I dont think the exact numbers matter too much though.

It is wild to see, how large the range in Master and Diamond would be compared to the low leagues. Its similar for SC2 though. I have watched several Bronze to Grandmaster runs from top players and they always take forever to get through Diamond, because the MMR range is so massive.

Anyways, I thought I'd share this. Perhaps something like this coudl be implemented at some point. Bug fixing should have priority though.

So how many here have tried theViper's Slav-Siege tower strat now? How'd it go? How about other strategies you've copied from other pros, how'd those go?

    Posted: 25 May 2020 11:47 PM PDT

I tried the Slav-siege tower masterpiece in a 2v2 game the night after TheViper revealed it on stream (before the youtube vid) and I got called out on it right as I jumped the opponents wall. "Viper is that you?" he said 11.

It didn't go well. First mistake was trying it against a Mongol opponent, he had mangudai ready to slaughter my longswords. Second mistake was being a lowly pleb and not having enough units.

    Control Group Management Tips?

    Posted: 26 May 2020 07:49 AM PDT

Ever since I started playing AoE2 20 years ago and read my strategy book, I have been using control groups to control my units.

Unfortunately, the control groups I use have become so ingrained into my gameplay that it's starting to hinder me. I always use the same control groups 1 for Infantry, 2 for Archers, 3 for Cavalry, 4 for Cavalry Archers, 5 for Siege (Mangonels), 6 Siege (Trebuchets,Cannons), 7 Monks, 9 "Combat Villagers"

I think these numbers are cemented into the muscle memory of my spine at this point, because I just expect those unit types to be there. However, this has several problems:

    • On one hand, I often don't have all the unit types to warrant spreading out all the numbers.
    • On the other hand, I sometimes need more fine-grained control. For example, just having "Infantry" is not good enough, I need to have "swordsmen" and "pikemen" in separate groups.
    • Also, this means that I can't have multiple attack groups! I have noticed that I would almost have the capacity to attack in multiple places simultaneously, but I just can't micro multiple groups at the same time, because every unit type needs to be in one group!

My biggest problem here is mental flexibility: I wish I could just switch it up as needed - but my brain has trouble adapting to it.

How do you guys use control groups?

Do you have tips for being "mentally flexible" about control groups?

    AOE2 DE ELO Distributions

    AOE2 DE ELO Distributions

I was interested in how the distributions of current 1v1 and team ELO rankings of the players looked like, so I made the following histograms:

    https://preview.redd.it/xdh1e0e6cz051.png?width=1200&format=png&auto=webp&s=f14906d571ad8959e3c33174c2c8f7291cec86c4

An average 1v1 ELO seems to be about 1000, while an average team rating is around 1300.

    Need advice on 2v4 gameplay

    Posted: 26 May 2020 07:34 AM PDT

Sorry for not using the questions thread, but I felt I wanted a bit more complex answers and some strong advice.

A friend and I have been challenged by other friends to beat them in a 2v4, with 2 of us human and their team having 3 + 1 hard AI.

The team of 4 are of differing skill levels and hover between moderate-hardest AI level, while the team of 2 generally beat insane AI comfortably.

Our first two games went as follows: we crush one of their players each, but then their two pockets boom up and rebuff our advance. They can stall enough for the two players to rebuild and tribute them to kickstart their economies.

The team of 4 is skilled enough to do things like tower cheese and know unit counters.

Our biggest trouble is pushing through layers of walls, castles. It's compounded by the fact that in a 2v4 the team of 2's map position spawns naturally mean they have poorer map control.

The team of 4 also has a dedicated Frankish player who does nothing but amass Paladins and suicide them into our forces (mostly halbs and gold units), but manages to stall for considerable amounts of time.

Has anybody been in a position to play outnumbered and can offer some advice? Thanks in advance

She spawns with you at the start of the game. You take the starting sheep together, chop some trees and mine a little bit of gold. As you helplessly fall in love with her, Sebastian the ficking scout trots over and woos here away from you to go build a barrack far away from ye. What is love? You ask
