Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 9 Week 8: Cumans vs Vikings

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 09:34 PM PDT

One of the most well-known, straightforward civs against... cOOmerS!!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Berbers vs Saracens, and next up is the Cumans vs Vikings!

    Cumans: Cavalry civilization

    • Additional Town Center can be built in Feudal Age
    • Siege Workshop and Battering Ram available in Feudal Age; Capped Ram available in Castle Age
    • Cavalry move +5/10/15% faster in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Palisade Walls and Gates +50% hp
    • Unique Unit: Kipchak (Weak cavalry archer that fires several arrows at once)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Steppe Husbandry (Light Cav, Steppe Lancers, and Cav Archers created +50% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Cuman Mercenaries (all teammates can create 10 free Elite Kipchaks at Castle)

    Vikings: Infantry and Naval civilization

    • Warships cost -15/15/20% in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Infantry +10/15/20% hp in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Wheelbarrow and Hand Cart free
    • TEAM BONUS: Docks cost -15%
    • Unique Unit: Berserk (Powerful infantry that slowly regens hp)
    • Unique Unit: Longboat (Nimble galley-like warship that fires multiple arrows at once)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chieftains (Infantry +4 damage to cavalry)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Berserkergang (Berserks regenerate faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • This one is going to be weird because we are looking at one of the most well-known civs vs one of the least well-known. For 1v1 open maps, Vikings are usually considered between pretty good to very good due to their powerful economy and passable military. Cumans however... uhhh... idk I think they're still pretty good? It's still hard to stop a 2 TC Feudal Age boom, and Vikings can struggle against powerful cavalry and cav archer civs.... yeah... what do you guys think here? 11
    • On closed maps like Arena and Black Forest, we are once again in for a weird match up. Again, Vikings can comfortably leverage their powerful eco to make strong early imp arb/ram pushes... but that's about all they do well. Cumans meanwhile can go for super aggression with early rams to punch through walls, or super greed to go for a safe Feudal Boom. Imo this one comes down to Cumans' ability to stop Vikings in early imp, whatdaya think?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Burmese vs Koreans. Hope to see you there! :)

    Ok, who was it?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 05:45 AM PDT

So i work for Microsoft Support, and I have been answering mails today. Usually its either some Windows technicality or some thing about Billings and accounts, but this one was subjected as "age of empires 2: DE". I told myself nice, i can help you. What followed was all my colleagues watching how I laughed my ass off.

Basically, this guy wrote a 2000 words rant about how shit Definitive Edition is, how little we know about balancing, the pathing, the Visuals, the animations, trees, physics, projectile physics, the online experience, maps, civs, ranting about HD aswell. He disliked EVERYTHING, calling us monkeys and apes and idiots. It was beautiful.

Now, this guy wrote to the technical, general email support adress, so this won't reach anyone except for people who can help you with Windows or your Account. Mail was marked as spam and then I went on with my Day, but that certainly made my day!

Cmon and Tell me who you are, so I can give you silver for a beautiful shitpost in between other boring technical issues. Show me my hero!

    Top Unique Counters vs. Condottiero

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 07:49 AM PDT

    Top Unique Counters vs. Condottiero

I just tested them and here are the results. They are the second unique unit of the Italians and are a "quick anti-gunpowder infantry unit". They win against Jannissaries, but I was surprised that they don't win with a larger margin.

    https://preview.redd.it/klf3qiyhev651.png?width=1920&format=png&auto=webp&s=0164da5a361f285a3573df1fa8f1c1699cb740f1

For the tests I assume PostImperial Age, no micro and equal resources, for example 35 Condottieros (50F, 35G each) vs 28 Elite Jannissaries (60F, 55G each). Then after the fight I count the HP of the winning unit and > 60% HP would be an A-Tier counter. I did all that 5 times to get a good average.

Disclaimer: This is not a ranking of how useful a unit is overall. It simply measures how well units do when patrolled into each other. Units have many attributes such as speed, range, attack damage and armor. This mostly focuses on attack and armor by design. So Teutonic Knights are expected to perform better than Mangudai (bc they can't make use of speed and range). This approach has its shortcomings but can hopefully still be useful because you know how it was created. Let me know what you would change :) (More detailed explanation is in the beginning of the video)

Three civs to rule them all

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:40 AM PDT

    Hey fellow agers,

I was thinking about the time effectiveness of my gaming in ranked games. As most of us don't have the time to get very good with all 35 civs, do you think there could be two or three go to civs, that you choose always and forever to get really really good with? Like an archer, cav and infantry civ each depending on the regarding map etc.? I thought about Japanese & Aztecs for e.g.

    Looking forward for your thoughts

Anyone noticing the skilllevel of ELO 1000 - 1100 is getting higher?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 01:42 PM PDT

I see people who knows all the counters, can boom with village production without stop. Some push deers. They know map layout and the maps overall strategy. 8/10 can execute basic BO fairly well. The only thing I can see is that games are messy and they react poorly to pressure. Then I joined in January people here barely knew the game. So I keep getting better but I never get beyond 1100.

I'm not whining, I have better games now and less of a steamroll for either side. I can conclude people really loves this game.

What is your favorute low tier civ?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 06:51 AM PDT

Usually we speak about our prefered civs, which may be related with the meta.

I want to see what civ from the low tier ones is the most liked within the community.

In my case, I like koreans a lot because of their UUs, towers and siege. Cant wait for them being buffed

I have no clue about the game dynamics and meta strategies - where can I learn ?

    Posted: 24 Jun 2020 01:30 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I am kind of a newish player (150 hours according to steam), and up to now, was mostly playing TG. I have now started 1v1, and while I do manage to win games (hovering around 1300 elo atm), I have absolutely no clue at what I am doing. If I manage to hit the late game, most of the time, I know that I will win, but in most games, I am behind the whole early game. I play entirely intuitively/reactively to what the opponent is doing, and am thus looking for good resources to get an understanding of the metagame and what is the "dynamic" of the game (mostly in feudal/castle).

I did check some BOs, but it only goes so far. For instance, if I pick an archer BO (with 2 ranges), I do not know what to do with it. For instance, when should I move forward and attack with my archer? If I move when I have like 10 archers, I feel like if the opponent went 5-6 scout, he will easily crush my 10 archers when I move in the open. But if I wait more, then there is the risk that he just went fast castle, and I feel like I will be way behind as he will be able to boom + easily defend with 1-2 mangonels. And scouting does not help once he is properly walled.

Another example: I have no clue when it is safe to fast castle, and if I can then drop 2 TCs or should I focus more on army.

    Thanks for the help !

    Faith or redemption?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 11:58 PM PDT

Edit: by redemption I mean heresy

So I've been wondering. The tech tree doesn't show exactly how good faith is, so it's hard to say which one would make more sense to have in a given situation. Do you people know, how it works?

The context: I enjoy Burmese. They have a problem with range. So elephants make sense with their extra pierce armor. Especially because Burmese don't get siege ram. But my opponents often mix in some monks. I guess that in this situation heresy would be better, because the elephants are so slow. The monks have plenty of time to convert regardless. But it's hard to say when there is no clear information.

I mean uninstalling from Steam. Does anyone know for sure? I wouldn't want to lose the campaign progress I made on hard difficulty and so on.

As title states, I would love some information on the best set up for fish traps.

Any suggestions? What do you guys do?

How do you handle opposing aggressive 1 TC pushes?

    Posted: 23 Jun 2020 09:17 PM PDT

    Hello all —

I'm getting better, hovering the 1050-1125 ELO range recently, and getting to a level where most strategies are simultaneously predictable but challenging to deal with.

The hardest strategies I've faced, with most ending in "gg" from me, involve a really aggressive 1 TC push in feudal or castle age.

I know how to comfortably handle the basic rushes (scouts, MAA, archers, castle knights, etc) and I'm able to push the game to imperial and seal the deal there, where I win most of my games. Analysis of my replays shows I'm losing (and losing bad) when my opponents spew troops in feudal or castle age with a single TC producing and military production going nonstop. I find myself especially vulnerable against mass archer and castle drop strategies, even with good scouting. I realize mangos/spears are good counters, or counter raiding their base with knights can work, but I've been struggling finding a "plan B" emergency strategy that's effective at either gutting their eco while I hang on, or outright pushing back.

I play as Lithuanians 95% of the time if this helps. Curious to hear what successful strategies people use when doing this. Thanks in advance!
