This has got to be one of the best 20-second turnarounds I've ever seen, insanity.
I'd write a better description but don't want to spoil it:

Cumans have some great black forest play potential.

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 05:03 AM PDT

Just got rolled by a team on Black Forest. They had a great strategy.

All three of them fast castled, with one Cuman player building rams outside my walls whilst he was upping. Immediate capped ram and my walls didn't stand a chance, with allies following up with knights. It happens so quickly there is very little you can do about it if you aren't expecting it until its too late.

Worth watching out for if you see Cuman on the opposing team. Not a trick i will fall for twice.

    Idea on reworking Feitoria

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 07:51 AM PDT

How about if it could be built in Castle age? Resouces generations and HP of buildings can be tweaked for balance, but here is my rationale:

Why Feitoria sucks now? Feitoria sucks most of the time because it is not population efficient in the imperial age, occupying 20 pop space while only work like maybe 5 to 8 pop depending on how much you sell your resources. It cannot be any higher though because it would just be broken in post imperial age.

Why they can be good in Castle age? (1) In castle age, population efficiency is not a problem. Building one can help speed up your boom and you don't need to worry about population capacity yet. It actually makes much more sense for this building to be able to build earlier in the game instead of being a super ultra late game resource generator. (2) The current Feitoria also generates food the fastest, which is ironically the least important resource for Portuguese in post-imperial, but something they (and all civs) need a lot in mid game.

How would it compare to TCs with current stat? Feitoria costs 250G 250S and 120 seconds (and the cost of 4 houses) to build . Comparing that to a TC which costs 275W 200S and 150 seconds to build, it is not that far off and it essentially give you at least 8 villagers that works immediately. Most importantly, the food generation from Feitoria is almost fast enough to sustain vill production from 1 TC as well, so you if you are not going for food costing units, you don't even need to spend resources on farms and have all you villagers just to get wood and gold for archers and siege.

What is the ideal balance? To be honest I do think that having essentially 8 vills that works immediately after building a Feitoria is pretty broken if it can be built in castle age, especially when you can just ignore farms and build shit tons of archers. The resource generation has to be lower in castle age. The ideal balance is that building Feitoria is better for going wood-and-gold military units or even a fast imperial strats, but building TC is still better in a long term pure booming game. My suggestion would be using the pre-patch generation rate in castle age, and then it would become faster right after you hit imperial.

Comparable game mechanics If someone here has played AoE3, a comparable mechanic in my mind would be he Dutch Bank, where they can be built earlier in the game to boost their economy, but ultimately balanced by having a worse late game economy due to a lower population capacity.

Why bother reworking Feitoria anyway? If you have been around since the African Kingdom has been released, you know how Portuguese was nerf to oblivion and, more importantly, had all their initial unique selling point removed. Aside from having Organ guns, the civ basically offer nothing special on land aside from the gold discount, which is barely noticeable when you play them, and free carto in dark age, probably their best bonus in team game. With currently 35 civs in the game and so many new updates to the OG civ as well, Portuguese deserve some loves, and while I see a lot of people giving different ideas on buffing them, why don't we focus on improving what they already have?

    Scouting Opponent

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 09:20 AM PDT

    Hi Guys,

Is there a way to tell where your opponent is before scouting him?
From my experience, and some tests I did, in most cases he will just be mirrored to you at the X-Axis of the map, like when I am bottom right, he will be top left. However this is not always the case and he sometimes is left or right to where I expected him to be.

I still have this bad habit of losing my scout to enemy TC. I feel like roughly knowing where to expect the opponent TC would help me alot here, so I can pay more attention to him when approaching that area. There has to be some map coding that determines the starting positions, right?

    Thanks in advance :)

A question about early game aggression

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 04:19 AM PDT

Hi all! I seem to have an issue with knowing when to raid when to be aggressive and I always tend to over boom and have a super economy, then get rolled in imperial age. I've played a few games online, have won less then a few, and have been practicing against hard AI and I can barely ever beat them, any tips would be appreciated , thanks!

I’m so bad at this game I swear to god the moderate AI just villager-rushed me

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 09:17 AM PDT

I was going for probably the sloppiest fast castle to knights ever, if you can even call it that. It's not actually a fast castle since the AI always beats me to it anyway. Lately though I've been winning by rushing in feudal to stunt the AI's economy so I can crush them later. While I did do this, some poor management on my part left me defenseless for quite a while after that initial raiding party of infrantry died off.

At one point I put up a tower and I swear to god the AI was like "lol ok" and straight up sent their villagers out to attack my tower and attack my nearby villagers. The level of disrespect was so intense I almost resigned out of embarrassment...but I pulled it together and managed to beat them back to their base.

They had a castle near what was now the frontlines, so as payback I knocked that bitch down and literally built my own castle in the rubble of theirs. Disrespect repaid with interest. I held the line with the castle and my small force of units before getting my army up alongside a second castle and steamrolling their disrespectful asses into non-existence.

But really I only won because I had double the vils and moderate can't make more than 38. A satisfying but ultimately hollow victory.

Anyway I'm brand new to the game but having a blast. It's like Smash Bros; simple to pick up hard to master.

    Perfect boom

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 06:58 AM PDT

For example, in this thread, you have perfect feudal and castle times.

What is considered a perfect boom? Reference guide -> How many vills you should have at x min?

3/4 or even 5 TCs? When you click imp? With how many resources?

What are the perfect times for a fast imp? Are there any ref. guides with timings?

Why is it called "wololo" when he's clearly saying "neeneenee"?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 01:40 AM PDT

EDIT: I will explain: I do not hear the pronounciation of any 'w', 'L' or 'o' in this sound clip. What I hear is "neeneenee". Do other people here "wololo" ?

EDIT2: Furthermore, I remember playing this game in my childhood and hearing "wololo". So it was a surprise to me to come back 20 years later and hear "neeneenee"

Viper thinks Portuguese deserve a buff on land and that Aztecs needed a nurf. What do you think?

    Posted: 15 Jun 2020 04:44 AM PDT

What kind of buff would you give the Portuguese? I think Paladin would be a nice addition.

As for Aztecs, I'd be inclined to take away Siege Onager or nurf Garland Wars from +4 to +2. They are seriously OP.

Anyone else disappointed in how closed all the maps in the 1v1 pool are now?

    Posted: 14 Jun 2020 03:49 PM PDT

It feels like the only consistently open map is Kilamanjaro. Even Arabia has a strong tendency to be super wall able now. Just wondering how everyone else feels about these maps.

A few days ago while loading into an online game, King Henry's (the guy inbetween the Mayan and Berber fellas) face was edited to look like the creepy Miley Cyrus meme. Did anyone else see that or was I just tripping hard?
