    More info behind Gamestar paywall

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 11:36 PM PDT

As they did last year for AoE4, German game magazine Gamestar had an exclusive interview with the developers of AoE3:DE. It's in German and behind a paywall.

In the freely accessible part there is a head line stating that home cities will be fully unlocked, a screenshot showing the new UI and a wider zoom level.

Could anybody with full access give a summary of further changes which might be discussed in the remainder of the article?

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition available on October 15th 2020

What do we know so far about the DE version

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:13 AM PDT

Now, with the trailer having been released, we got the final confirmation that the game is coning out. And it is coming soon with the 15th of octobre being the realease date. With the steam page being online and the release traile out, what are the important things that we know about now?

For me, i found the following things to be interesting/important:

    1. LAN gameplay is a thing. The steam version has the tag that LAN gameplay is available, which is huge for me, because i was almost sure they wouldn't implement that anymore with the recent push towards always-online games.

    2. Swedes and Incas as new civs. Sweden has been one of the hottest guesses, and for rather obvioud reasons. Incas were a bit of a suprise to me, and while i do enjoy my sioux and aztec gameplay, I am unsure of how good the new native nation is gonna be.

    3. Historical battles. Never thought about this option, but the more i think about it, the more hyped i get. I imagine them like the historical battles from AoE 2, and i loved these, so I am reaaaaally interested in seeing what they created for us.

    4. Graphics actually improved. During the Beta, some voices got loud (even though there was an NDA) that the graphics improvement was not really noticable, but the graphics in the trailer habe the same wow effect on me like when i saw aoe 2 de for the first time after the release. I just hope that it is well playable with mid-spec hardware.

What are your takes from the recent output of information? What are you hyped for, what seems questionable to you?

    Improved AI in DE?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 12:15 AM PDT

Will DE have improved AI like they did in AOE 2? I really like to play against AI and doing some comp stomp.

Also, are there any useful AI improvement mods for the current edition? The ones I found are posted years and years ago on the forum.

    Thanks a lot!

    Redesigned native civs

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:06 PM PDT

We don't know if they are adressing the three big (sioux, iroquois and aztecs), minor native american settlements or both.

"Speaking on civilizations, a key focus of our work at World's Edge is to authentically represent the cultures and peoples that we depict in our games. While developing Age III: DE, we realized that we weren't upholding that value as well as we could regarding our Native American cultures; so we set out to fix that: working directly with tribal consultants to respectfully and accurately capture the uniqueness of their peoples, history, and cultures. Returning players will find there's been some fundamental changes to the Native American civilizations, and we hope you find them as compelling as we do!"

Still no trail of slavism :S, but I find it cool.

How much balance support and competitive tournaments?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:57 AM PDT

I did play this game a lot, but not in multiplayer when it came out. Recently, I did play one multiplayer game or so on the competitive client with balance changes from the community and so on.

Now I do like RTS games a lot, I've played a lot of SC2 in the past. But I hate bad balance and developers who cannot listen to reason. I started playing company of Heroes again which was fine up until the very recent patch where one faction (Brits) got buffed to stupidly OP levels, so I quit.

I did also play Warcraft 3 Reforged but the Reforged release destroyed a 15 year old game when it ripped out half the content. Several months past release and there is no ranked ladder, not even profiles with game statistics etc. So Blizzard is dead aswell when it comes to developing games.

As you might imagine, I am careful now since my last experiences with RTS have been bad. Can we expect reasonable and consistent balance changes which keep up with the meta and tournaments?

Post some guesses for historical battles!

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:25 PM PDT

I'm interested to see if the historical battles they have advertised will be up to the standard of the ones in AOE2, here are some guesses to what they could include:

    1. Tenochtitlan: 1521, the great siege of Tenochtitlan where the Spanish and their native allies destroyed the Aztec empire. Play as Spanish against Aztecs.
    2. Cusco: 1536, an Incan siege to attempt to break Spanish power in Peru and reconstitute the empire. Play as the Incas against the Spanish and attempt to change history.
    3. Bahrain: 1559, a major Ottoman expedition to try and dislodge the Portuguese after they encroached in the Persian Gulf. Play as the Portuguese and defend against the Ottmans.
    4. Galle: 1640, the successful Dutch conquest of the Portuguese holdings in Sri Lanka (unlike Brazil). Play as the Dutch to besiege the Portuguese fort.
    5. Guararapes: 1649, the expulsion of the Dutch invaders from the Portuguese colony of Brazil. Play as the Portuguese to deal with the Dutch.
    6. Fort Zeelandia: 1661, the siege and capture of a major Dutch fort on Taiwan by the Chinese pirate lord Koxinga. Play as the Chinese to reduce the Dutch presence on the island.
    7. Cartagena de Indias: 1741, an abortive attempt by the British to seize one of the most important Spanish cities in their colonies. Play as the Spanish and fend off the British attack.
    8. Quebec: 1760, the conquest of the Capital of the French colonies in Canada, the loss of which ultimately crippled the French empire. Play as the British to conquer the city from France.
    9. Devil's Hole: 1763, the ambush of a British convey by disaffected Seneca soldiers who had joined Pontiac's rebellion. Play as the Iroquois against the British.
    10. Yorktown: 1781, the culmination of the American revolution and end of British contol of the 13 colonies. Play as the French to support your American rebel allies against the British.

I'd like to hear what other people would think to include!
