Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 9 Week 16: Japanese vs Slavs

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:49 AM PDT

The Russo-Japanese War... just a bit earlier 11

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Magyars vs Turks, and next up is the Japanese vs Slavs!

    Japanese: Infantry (and Naval) civilization

    • Fishing Ships x2 hp; +0/+2 armor; work +5/10/15/20% faster per Age
    • Mills, Lumber Camps, and Mining Camps cost -50%
    • Infantry attack +33% faster, starting in Feudal Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Galleys +50% LoS
    • Unique Unit: Samurai (Infantry with fast attack and bonus damage vs other UUs)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Yasama (Towers fire 2 extra arrows)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Kataparuto (Trebuchets fire +33% faster; pack 4x faster)

    Slavs: Infantry and Siege civilization

    • Farmers work +10% faster
    • Supplies free
    • Siege Workshop units cost -15%
    • Team Bonus: Military buildings provide +5 population space
    • Unique Unit: Boyar (Heavily armored cavalry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Orthodoxy (Monks get +3/+3 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Druzhina (Infantry deal 5 trample damage)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alrighty, so two solid, but very different civs here! For 1v1 on open maps, both civilizations have distinct strengths and weaknesses. Japanese have a very strong opening with lots of early wood savings, super M@A, and a broad tech tree, but kind of trail off in the midgame without a persistent eco bonus. Slavs meanwhile have a slower, but ultimately stronger economy thanks to their farmers, and possess superior cavalry and siege. However, their lack of good archers is a bit of an issue. Who do you favor?
    • On more closed maps, Japanese may struggle to keep up economically, but if they can Keep up their powerful Keeps, it could certainly Keep them afloat in the late game, with the additions of good archers and halbs. Meanwhile, Slavs are a classically strong closed map civ, and can certainly brute force their way through most issues with infantry, cavalry, and siege. Who do you favor on closed maps?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Britons vs Tatars. Hope to see you there! :)

    Portuguese, Balance Suggestion

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 02:54 AM PDT

    Portuguese

    Starts with +150 Stone

So now instead of being a generic Archer civ, and officially the worst civ in the game, they join the special club of stone users. (Incas, Bulgarians, Franks, Spanish, Koreans)A potential tower rush could be what Port are missing in the Feudal Age, Early Castle Age, to become a good civ. It would be an excuse to mine stone for a castle, or even a good set up to drop their castle on their enemy.Organ Guns are a solid unit if you just had the legitimacy to make a castle, unlike conquistadors who justify a defensive castle (due to mobility and overall worth), it goes smoother with an offensive castle, and Organ Gun are siege weapons, really shred buildings.

*Can also be used in booming map for the sake of just building 4TCs.Or just for a free tower in the Feudal Age on top of a regular 3TC boom.

The Age of Empires 2 community's attitude towards AOE 3?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 06:56 AM PDT

I'm curious about the attitude of the aoe2 community towards Age of Empires 3. I assume most people will prefer Age 2 over 3 but still curious to see what everyone else thinks. So, r/aoe2, do you actually like Age 3?

UPDATE: Had him on the ropes twice, still lost. How to deal the final blow with Mayans?

A follow up on this post: https://www.reddit.com/r/aoe2/comments/iaadla/had_him_on_the_ropes_twice_still_lost_how_to_deal/

Had many great tips and help from fellow redditors! Thanks a lot!

Started practicing the build orders from Cicero and adding more vills/siege when playing more aggressive. Took some time to getting used to and lost several matches. But as of yesterday I felt it finally clicked and even had a +7 winstreak!

When I try to push in feudal age, the minute I enter Castle Age I add in siege, create more vills, and really try to K.O. the opponent. (not only with Mayans, but also Celts) Resulted in several <40 minute wins. There is still room for massive improvement of course, but there is serious improvement since then. Thanks a lot for all the help!

How many FU knights needed to take out 20 xbows?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 01:07 AM PDT

This is asking about the tipping point where 50:50 whether xbows would win or knights, rather then how many is a good engagement.

Help with defending against someone micro-ing Mangudai.

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 08:17 AM PDT

This is something I am constantly running into (1600 elo TG but I feel I am playig a little above my capabilities). How do I defend this? Do I go raid somewhere else?

I have even ran into this while playing goths and huskarls are supposed to counter, but how can I when I cant catch up to the fast Mangudai and they just kite my guys to a castle.

Writing this out, the obvious answer seems "Micro better" but is there anything else I should be doing?

    Thank you all!

Help: AOE2DE - Bayinnaung Campaign The Old Tiger - Hard

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:48 AM PDT

Hey guys I need some help finishing off this scenario which is frankly very hard for me. I've tried to look at a couple of playthroughs here and there. On the one hand, if I play it as I should regularly, by the time I move on to the final temple the whole army spam is literally behind me with galleons, pikemen, etc... If I opt to head up first and finish off the "vietnamese", as soon as i move back down the spam would've already started from every direction.

I saw this guy on Youtube who finished off the "vietnamese" and continued north along the coast, while sending Bayinnaung down to meditate with the elephant and soldiers dead... when I did that the elephant and soldiers on the first temple were still there awaiting my arrival. I honestly don't know what to do at this point, there was one try where I was actually able to meditate on all 4 temples but as soon as I was done the original base to the east was already swarming with enemies including trebs, Rattan Archers, rams...you name it they had it. So any advise on the matter is well appreciated.

I thought I was OK at the game but I didn't know I was worse than 32x the total number of AOE 2 players.

Aoe 2 DE lobby browser (unranked) bug

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:39 AM PDT

Has the latest patch broke it, or why can't I find any games? Last week there were at least 20-30 unranked lobbies, but now i don't find any.

Anyone else have same problem or have fix for it?

    Error: timed out

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 03:33 AM PDT

Sometimes when I try to join unranked lobby, i get an error "unable to join game. Error: timed out"

Do you know the reason for this?

The error msg would make sense if the lobby was not available anymore, but I have e.g. tried to join to a lobby like 10 times and each time (after refreshing lobby browser) it was 5/8 full and did exist.

    Quirky civilizations?

    Posted: 26 Aug 2020 09:29 PM PDT

Hello, wanted to know, do people classify civs into particular groups based on their playstyle? For example mesoamerican civilizations and Goths, or Bulgarians strike me as "unique" given either an overwhelming focus on particular kind of unit, or absence of a kind of unit almost everyone else has. Is there anywhere I can read up on how to play as them or counter them?

What is the Best way to beat 2 AI's?

    Posted: 27 Aug 2020 07:10 AM PDT

The scenario would be a team game 3v3 and I would like to take my flank and their pocket early to give breathing room to my pocket to boom, since my friend is a bit slower and cannot defend against an AI that has boomed uninterrupted. My other flank would lose sometimes too and when that happens is hard for me to defend against two boomed AI's.

Note: We are all noobs but I'm a little bit better. I can 1v1 against Extreme AI with archer rush into eagles with Mayans. But the games with my friends are against Hard AI, but still, when my other flank looses or fails his rush it gets really hard. That's why I want to be able to take down two AI's before they boom.

Just a thought: Do you guys think that going 4 Archer ranges (2 for each AI) could work? I'm thinking like a simultaneous Archer Rush Against 2 AI's
