Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 9 Week 14: Byzantines vs Vietnamese

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 11:16 AM PDT

I hope you like skirmishers for this one!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Celts vs Chinese, and next up is the Byzantines vs Vietnamese!

    Byzantines: Defensive civilization

    • Buildings +10/20/30/40% hp per Age
    • Camels, Skirmishers, and Spearmen cost -25%
    • Fire Ships attack +20% faster
    • Advance to Imperial Age costs -33%
    • Town Watch free
    • TEAM BONUS: Monks heal +50% faster
    • Unique Unit: Cataphract (Heavy cavalry that excels vs infantry)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Greek Fire (Fire Ships +1 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Logistica (Cataphracts gain +8 additional bonus dmg vs infantry; deal 5 trample damage)

    Vietnamese: Archer civilization

    • Enemy positions are revealed at the start of the game
    • Economic upgrades cost no wood
    • Archery Range units +20% hp
    • Conscription free
    • TEAM BONUS: Imperial Skirmisher upgrade available at Archery Range
    • Unique Unit: Rattan Archer (Powerful foot archer with massive pierce armor)
    • Unique Unit: Imperial Skirmisher (Imperial Age upgrade to Skirmisher-line)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Chatras (Battle Elephants +50 hp)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Paper Money (You and all teammates receive 500g)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Two very defensive, grindy civs here! For 1v1 on Arabia and other open maps, both civilizations are solid, if not quite among the very best. Vietnamese now can boast an eco bonus over Byzantines, but the latter possess the ever-useful cheap trash and broad tech tree. Neither civ has incredible siege, so how can either civ break the other?
    • On closed maps like Arena, both of these civs are popular. Byzantines have always been great due to their fast Imperial potential, strong defenses, and again - cheap trash and broad tech tree. Vietnamese have very much seen a renaissance with the addition of an eco bonus, and are now considered by some to be among the very best clown civs around. Who do you favor on these more closed maps?
    • On hybrid and water maps, Byzantines can utilize their powerful fire ships quite effectively, as well as make use of all of their other bonuses. Meanwhile, Vietnamese get some critical early wood savings due to their eco bonus. Is that enough of an advantage to overcome the might of the Byzantine navy and defenses?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Malians vs Spanish. Hope to see you there! :)

I just discovered the power of siege ram

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 01:31 AM PDT

Currently hovering around 900 elo and recently discovered the power of Siege Rams. So satisfying rolling into a base and melting buildings. Had a particularly good game using them as Celt recently!

Before this I've been counting on trebs, and often loosing many of them due to poor mobility and poor placement.

Hey fellows, i wonder, what are the annoying things while playins as byzantines and playing against byzantines?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 04:40 AM PDT

Someone's asking about the best game ever at r/askreddit (again). You'll never guess which one made top comment.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 07:34 PM PDT

the more i play other maps on ranked, the more i understand why green arabia was the standard 20 years ago.

    Posted: 05 Aug 2020 11:19 PM PDT

there is no cliffs, no hills, no overly glare maps that hurt your eyes. so you can place your tc and stable almost everywhere outside the tress.

in almost every other map in the rotations, you cant put tcs on hills because it is too small a flat surface, the cliffs block so that archers do good, and there are so many small useless decorative plants there that does not do anything but distractions.

sometimes it feels like playing against the map and the game mechanisms than playing against a player

Is there a guide somewhere on using the mini map efficiently?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 05:15 AM PDT

I feel like I don't use the mini map as much as I should. I searched r/aoe2 but found nothing. Closest thing was someone asking how often to check it. And a ton of people asking how to center it.

Are Indians a worthy choice on Cenotes?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 12:55 AM PDT

Possibly a noob question, but due to the small-medium amount of shore fish on the map, are Indians a worthy choice because of their fishing bonus, or are the fish too far apart to be an efficient food source?

I've tried Indians twice on Cenotes now, because I've thought of this, and then proceed to not go fishing at all... 11.

How do I see both villager counts in replays on AOE2:DE?

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 02:11 AM PDT

This might be a stupid question, but when I'm watching a replay and I'm trying to keep track of my villager count compared to my opponent, is there a way to see both villager counts easily without having to switch back and forth between followed player?

What is the best vil count to go for that first juicy pig.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 04:03 AM PDT

My normal opening is pretty standard, 6 on sheep, four on wood then vil 11 goes gets the first juicy porker. Is this wrong??? Am I waiting to late to get the first boar. I find that my first 6 vill's are just about done with the forth sheep (I'm not the fastest player) by the time I'm sending vil 11 to get the pig.

Whenever I use Hotkey Q for patrol, it doesn't work.

    Posted: 06 Aug 2020 06:47 AM PDT

Whenever I use hotkey Q for patrol, it just continues to spam click the button and it doesn't work. I think I got it to work in like 10% of cases, but it's so frustrating. The button work when I click on it manually, but not when I use it via hotkeys.

Anyone else experience this before? I'm using a mechanical keyboard, if that makes a difference?

Edit: I fixed this by re-assigning the hotkey to 1 instead of q. Works
