Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 9 Week 18: Britons vs Tatars

Foot archers vs cav archers! (also sorry I am a bit late with this one lul)

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Japanese vs Slavs, and next up is the Britons vs Tatars!

    Britons: Foot Archer civilization

    • Town Centers cost -50% wood, starting in Castle Age
    • Archer-line and Longbows have +1/+2 range in Castle/Imperial Age
    • Shepherds work +25% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Archery Ranges work +20% faster
    • Unique Unit: Longbowman (Powerful, long-range foot archer)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Yeoman (Foot archers +1 range; Towers +2 attack)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Warwolf (Trebuchets have 100% accuracy; deal .5 radius blast damage)

    Tatars: Cavalry Archer civilization

    • Herdable animals last +50% longer
    • Units deal an additional +25% damage when fighting from higher elevation
    • Thumb Ring, Parthian Tactics free
    • TEAM BONUS: Cavalry Archers +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Keshik (Medium cavalry that slowly generates gold when attacking units)
    • Unique Unit: Flaming Camel (Anti-cavalry, anti-elephant petard - trained at Castle)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Silk Armor (Scouts, Steppe Lancers, and Cav Archers +0/+1 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Timurid Siegecraft (Trebuchets +2 range; Flaming Camels enabled)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alrighty, one of the most well-known civs vs one of the least well-known civs here. For 1v1 Arabia, Britons are generally considered very strong right now due to the walling wonderland that is that map. That heavily helps the Britons' mobility issues, and allows them to get to Castle Age pretty comfortably. However, this can also be very helpful for Tatars, who have a pretty easy FC -> cav archer play with the longer lasting sheep and free Thumb Ring. Also, Brits can struggle vs good CA civs like Huns. What do you think here?
    • Again, on more closed maps like BF and Arena, Britons are very popular. Again again, Britons, however, do struggle against strong cav archers. With Tatars especially, when it comes to late game, they get extra pierce armor for their cav archers and hussars, as well as access to siege rams and long-range trebs. Are Tatars viable against Britons here?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will begin round 10(!) with the Berbers vs Portuguese. Hope to see you there! :)

When you are defeated: type "GG" and then wait 5 seconds for your opponent to answer back. Then you resign.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 04:51 AM PDT

Because, you know, the giant banner blocks you from typing. Can we all agree to do that so we can get the "GG" courtesy more often?

Countering 15 Eagle Warriors in Feudal age.

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 08:25 AM PDT

Hey guys, how would you counter 15 EW's in feudal age against Aztecs? I had played scouts into archers and had to watch my army of 4 scouts and 12 archers get shredded by Eagles.

Your input would be much appreciated.

Appearently you can see your opponents picked civ REGARDLESS if they have hidden civs or not by choosing their color.

Do you think Elo should decrease over time?

    Posted: 03 Sep 2020 07:57 AM PDT

I see elo as a tool to get fair opponents. Whenever I don't play for a week or so, I come back to the game and just get absolutely wrecked. Have to lose like 4 matches until I can get up again. I dont have the time to play constantly and you just get rusty once you stop playing. Some slight elo loss after some amount of days of not playing(like, lets say 3 days) would be very helpful.

    Help me get better

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:13 PM PDT

    Hey guys

I'm just getting started at aoe2 (sinde march) and in around 1000elo after about 100 games. Right now i like to play as ethiopians because i like to use archers and i like siege and i enjoy to have hussars and shotels for raiding. I usually play the archer build from hera and the build order trainer mod and i enjoy coming to castle age already having archers which i can upgrade afterwards. But i always struggle against rushes with scouts or man at arms. The problem is that people just get up way faster than me, because i need 22 pop to go up. Because of that they can harass me and i can't get up into castle age. I find it hard to get put of these circle s when they start pressuring me early and when i loose it's almost always the same way and i don't know what to do against it since quickwalling is very difficult. I was hoping you could recommend me some builds or tips on how to avoid getting behind that early in 1v1. If i once have my 10 or so archers i usually get the upper hand but when they attack mi very early i always struggle. Thanks for your help.

Does the AI coordinate attacks and share information (even when not teammates)?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:00 PM PDT

My family and I like to play against the AI on Extreme difficulty. Often, we set the game up so that there are 3 teams: humans, AI team, and another AI team. VERY frequently, it seems like as soon as I send troops out on one side of the map against 1 AI team, the other AI team launches an attack on the other side of the map. It is almost as if all AI share a line of sight, even the ones that are not on teams with each other.

It is beyond mere coincidence. Usually within 15-30 seconds of me sending my army out on one side, an all-out assault commences on the opposite side of the map. This almost suggest the computer knows my army is busy elsewhere. Any chance there is a bug when you check the share light of sight with teammates option in the lobby menu that it shares between all of the AIs by default? Just a question.
