    Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Britons vs Tatars, and next up is the Berbers vs Portuguese!

    Berbers: Cavalry and Naval civilization

    • Villagers move +10% faster
    • Stable units cost -15/20% in Castle/Imperial Age
    • Ships move +10% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Genitours available at Archery Range starting in Castle Age
    • Unique Unit: Camel Archer (Powerful anti-cavalry-archer cavalry archer)
    • Unique Unit: Genitour (Mounted skirmisher)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Kasbah (TEAM Castles work +25% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Maghrebi Camels (Camel units regenerate)

    Portuguese: Naval and Gunpowder civilization

    • All units cost -20% gold
    • Ships +10% hp
    • Can build Feitoria in Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Cartography researched at start of the game
    • Unique Unit: Organ Gun (Light artillery siege unit)
    • Unique Unit: Caravel (Galley-like warship with piercing bolt attack)
    • Unique Building: Feitoria (Generates slow, infinite trickle of all resources; costs 20 population)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Carrack (Ships +1/+1 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Arquebus (Gunpowder units better hit moving targets)

    Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, so in honor of KotD3 coming up - let's specifically talk about these civs for KotD Arabia (i.e. more open and aggressive than standard arabia). Now, neither of these civs are generally considered powerhouses on this map, but that should mean a match up between the two is fairly even. Berbers generally possess better mobility, whereas Portuguese have access to more powerful late game units. Who do you prefer here?
    • In team games, Berbers would rather be a pocket civ, and Portuguese would rather be a flank civ (due to the former preferring cavalry and the latter favoring archers and gunpowder). Both civs are solid in these roles, but are generally overshadowed by civs that have better economies. Nonetheless, do you think Berber cavalry spam or Portuguese gunpowder doom push is stronger?
    • On water maps, both of these civs are excellent, if not quite top-tier. Berbers and their faster moving ships can be a nightmare to deal with when it comes to early game galley micro, but Portuguese ships are tankier, cheaper, and they have access to the caravel. Which civ is better for your Islands games?

    I appreciate that they've done work on unit pathing.

    I think that unit sizing has changed to accommodate this rather than any script changes.

    I can now fit 6 men at arms on 1 tile. I've had 14 archers stand on 2 tiles which was impossible to destroy with cav because units could only reach a small amount of them.

    It's ridiculous, and if it is a feature, it's so bad it's a bug.

    Edit 1: also, shock. Any post that remotely criticises DE gets downvoted without reasonable or rational discussion. Is it a crime to want the game to be better?

    Subpar multiplayer custom scenario experience

    This is kind of a rant, but It's painful to host any kind of scenario like CBA atm.

    -There a lobby bug with transferring files. If you transfer files to every person in lobby while its not full, you lose the ability to kick a player. Since it's not uncommon that one dude just dosen't ready up and just sit here idle, it's a pain in a butt. You need to change the map to regular one, then change it back to the custom scenario which often result in the lobby completely breaking.

    -On the topic of transferring files, why do we have to transfer a map to somebody who is already subscribed to it ?

    -This is probably a general issue but so many games just never start. Often there is a player who just takes forever to load when the game start which either results in the game never starting of several people dropping out (curiously, never the lagger). I have a pretty big ban list because of the numbers of laggers in this game. Never in a game I had to ban/block so many people to have a decent experience. I don't think this is completely on people however as this game seems to like any kind of lag compensation and just resort to slowing down everyone's game if someone lags. Also all the drop out during games.

    So what I'm asking is if anyone is encountering the same issues or I am the only one?

    How to beat my son at AoE2

    UPDATE: I'll try the Scout Rush.

    The basic setup is we play from dark ages through empire, attempting to destroy each other. He really likes his army to be all cavalry (usually paladins) and trebuchets.

    What's a good counter strategy against him? Maybe mangonels inside a box of pikemen?

    Summer World Tour restarted?

    Mods in ranked

    Hello there!

    Yesterday I found out about Age of Mandala and idle villager icon in the mods section. They are pretty awesome! What I want to know is: If I use this mods in the ranked games, will it lead me to a ban?

    I mean, I already used "small trees", "no bushes" and the "grid" (this last one came to the game menu afterward).

    I'm asking if it is legal to use them.

    Victories not counting

    Hello there!

    I'm playing this wonderfull game for more than 250 hours right now. However, the "win count" is not ticking. Sometimes it counts, sometime doesn't. I tried repairing files, resinstalling, booting, everything!
    Is there a hard fix for it?

    How to deal with massed cav archer in castle age

    Im having a difficult time playing against massed cav archer in mid castle age. Currently i mostly play persians and open archers into kts which trades pretty good in straight up fights, but i cant deal with the eco harassment. Im thinking that i just need to make skirms, but then my imp will be much slower and skirms also arent very mobile which makes it a struggle to defend with them. Any suggestions?

    Well, I am a big fan of battles. I loved the medieval battles. The fact that numbers don't matter if the tactics used are great fascinated me! It would be really cool if we could use some of the battle tactics like flanking and phalanxes in AOE2 HD. If it is already there, please suggest how to use it in the comments

    Ranked lobby's drop

    In two days straight I had 6 or more dc's before game even launched and all of my teammates excluding party leader dropped. Sometimes there is information that lost connection to multiplayer services. Does anyone have the same problem? In addition I want to say that I had never connection problems from my side and had like 8 drops through my almost 500 games.

    Devs should see this and do something with that cause I lost like a 100 elo because of that.
