    Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the correct place to post this but I was hoping to get a few opinions on this Japan themed cover I made of the menu music for Age Of Empires 2.

Many thanks, any comments are welcome!

Small rant: do people not say GG anymore in DE?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:49 AM PDT

I remember when I played on Voobly, less than a year ago, it was completely standard for both players to say gg when the game ends. But in DE, there have been many games where I resign and don't get a gg back. And this is at 1400+ rating, so you don't have the excuse of being new; if you're 1400, you have been playing for a while, you know what it means to say gg, and you know what it means to not say it.

Maybe I'm overanalyzing (or overreacting), and I should just get used to people not saying gg. But gg is a standard thing throughout gaming, it's a sign of respect towards your opponent. I cannot help but feel like when you don't say gg, you're saying that I don't deserve it. It's just good manners.

    That is all.

    Hardware optimization in DE?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:53 AM PDT

    Hey there,

Played a few games of DE with my friends recently, and noticed something interesting: On task manager, it's saying that all 16 threads of my Ryzen 3700x are being used. Only thing I had in the background was steam, and that only uses like ~20% of one thread while in a voice call.

I'd heard for the longest time that RTS games (but particularly the Age of empires series) was heavily single thread bound.

Now, it played incredibly smoothly (until we got to the 500 pop trash wars where there was some pretty disgusting frame stutters, but that's to be expected) so this isn't complaining about anything, but i'm just surprised that I was hitting every single thread for a reasonable amount.

Am I imagining things, or have there been some optimizations to the DE (specifically AOE2DE) that cause multi-core support? Do the other Age games (And the older versions of AOE2) only hit 1 core?

As a side note - is the DE version very GPU intensive? Also, if one of my friends has a potato for a pc, will it cause everyone else to stutter during those massive trash wars?

    Thank you.

Is there a mod to have the music from Age of Conquerers (I know about the Age of Kings original music mod already) play when your playing?

Is it me or are cav archers awful?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 03:48 PM PDT

I play a lot of mongols and experimenting with other cav archer civs like the Magyars, I feel like I cannot hot and run because of their stupidly low frame delay compared to mangudai. Am I missing something?

What is the right macro behind a 21 pop Scrush?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 08:52 AM PDT

I have gotten pretty good at an archers opening with a few variations. They all feel so nice since you are not spending food. I would like to learn Scouts for open maps. I've been practicing the button clicks, I know how to do 6F > 3F > the transitions to end on 10F/10W... There is always room for improvement early, but I'd say I am slightly above average at dark age efficiency: not getting housed, proper luring, pushing deer when map allows for it, shift-queueing to minimize animal decay, etc.

I feel like I understand the goal of the BO and the mechanics. I am trickling in Scouts to try and pick of wallers or low hp vils. Once I get to 4-5 Scouts I can even pick off a lonely spear or two without massive losses. If I play Magyars, I can go for vil kills pretty effectively. Worst case slow walls and force idle time on tree lines or mines.

However, 400-500f is a massive Feudal age investment and even in raids where I get vil kills, it feels like I lose so much eco pace. so I am looking for some advice on how to balance my economy behind that initial 4-5 Scouts.

Food based openings seem so much harder to execute than Archers, where you basically just have to "balance" your eco to produce an extra 50g every 30s which amounts to 2-3x extra miners per Range.

All that said a few specific questions. Let's assume you are adding 4-5 Scouts and finding moderate success on your raids, but it's not going to be full feudal aggression.

    • How many additional vils would you target adding in Feudal, having gone up with 10F/10W? I think this is the most important one
    • What order do you add them in? Is it standard to go 3G+, then Wood>Food as Farms are able to be built?
    • At what vil population would you consider idling your TC to go to Castle? I assume this is what I'm missing and that you must idle the TC to make up for the 400-500F investment in your Scouts, and still have a respectable Castle time to go Knights or Xbows.

Basically, my mid game for Scouts sucks and I'm not sure what to focus on. I'm static at 1300 ELO.

What specs are you playing on?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 07:53 AM PDT

Just curious what sort of machines you folks are using and what the experience is like. This game doesn't feel like it should consume resources like it does, especially with the enhanced graphics disabled.

Anyone here managing on a "low-end" machine? How's that working out for you?

For reference, I'm playing on a Ryzen 5 2600x, 16gb RAM, and a Sapphire RX-580. Playing offline with most settings at high, 1080p resolution, enhanced graphics disabled is basically flawless. That shouldn't be a surprise though; I think I'm firmly middling on the performance spectrum. I'm really curious, however, to know how the game runs on older/lower powered machines, such as basic laptops from the past 5 years, etc.

    Tatars are fine?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:46 PM PDT

Well... I played only team ladder recently. And I often see Magyars, Mongols that have good C.A. and I also can see Cumans that have good Cav line and good CA UU.

    But... I rarely see Tatars.

Are they bad? If not, why people play Tatars.

Zerator organises an AoE 2 FFA invitational, the beginning of competitive AoE FFA?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:05 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

French major streamer Zerator has announced an FFA tournament in AoE 2 : https://www.en24.news/2020/08/zerator-and-alphacast-organize-age-of-empires-2-tournament-at-grand-rex-dates-and-cashprize-breakflip-news-guides-and-tips.html .

8 players (identities not revealed, hopefuly top world players) will go at virtual war to win a total cash prize of 5000 euros ( little bit less than 6000 usd), at the Grand Rex in France ( largest theatre in Europe, 300 square meters screen, 2800 seats, pretty nice place ).

I wanted to take that opportunity to start a debate on the possibility of FFA game mode entering the competitive AoE scene. Do you guys think such a thing can happen? Is it good for AoE? Hyped? Could it overshadow the typical 1v1s?

I personaly think it is a really good perspective, and also that if it catches the public's interest, it has the means to develop, for the following reasons:

    1) FFA can allow AoE to show its full potential. This game has a lot of civilisations to pick from, but all of them or not equaly viable for direct confrontation, especially the ones built for end game, restricting a lot of content. But as an 8 player free for all is almost guaranted to end in post imp, it can allow those civs to shine better than ever.

    2) AoE is a very well suited rts for FFA. With a pop cap often set to 200, it allows massive battles to happen, which are not only rare to see but also very pleasant to watch, and this could help catching the attention of a wider public who could maybe be less attracted at first sight to the highly micro intensive traditional 1v1 games, hopefully increasing the playerbase.

    3) Zerator has already shown how far he can push things when driven by passion (see trackmania cup, etc), has a lot of experience in events organisation, and a big fanbase. Moreover, he seems to get a lot of fsupport from microsoft who are willing to conquer back the gaming world with their gamepass thing, and AoE is one of the main franchise in the game selection. The recent annoucement of AoE 3 de and AoE 4 also shows the clear intention to invest in the franchise. Point of all of this being, logistics and money will not be a problem if the fans follow.

That's all for me, waiting for your opinions on this !

Anyone experiencing bugs with parties in ranked?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 06:11 PM PDT

My friend and I play ranked 2s, and after every game, he's booted out of the party and we have to reinvite again. And also, we're seeing way more DCs than we normally do. Anyone else having these issues?

How do I know what Upgrades Apply to Special Units?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:14 PM PDT

I know you can hover over the units to see where to get their upgrades, but it isn't specific on which upgrade. For example the conquistador, it says "armor (Blacksmith)" but which one? Is it Calvary or Archer? Now I know from that it is Archer, but just wished it showed the icon of the upgrade so if in doubt you knew for certain. Is there a place that shows this information?
