I was playing ranked (900) and I just had a guy lame me with Incas, and I thought he was suspiciously skilled for our elo. He even bm'ed me after the game. So I look him up on aoe2.net and sure enough, he is a 1200-elo player who lost 15 games in a row just the day before, dropping by nearly 300 elo in just a few hours. To be sure, I download two of his games, and he just idles until the opponent destroys his tc (obviously losing on purpose). If this is you, piss off. Curb stomping noobs in a lobby game would be shitty enough, but to do in a ranked game AND bm after winning is just fucking sad.

Need some help understanding 1-TC all-in strategies as Saracens

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 07:17 AM PDT

Inexperienced player here, ~900 elo just starting off, played a handful of ranked 1v1s.

I'm playing as Saracens only right now because they're one of the few civs I remember from AOK way back when.

When reviewing past games, I realise I have a tendency to be too passive, and not attack/raid when it would have been easy to take the initiative. To try and fix this, I'm trying to push for Feudal Age aggression every time with archers followed with some light cav, and only playing open maps.

I haven't got the dexterity yet to easily manage a 3 TC economy while trying to be aggressive. I hear other players talk a lot about going "1 TC all-in" without really understanding what it means, but figure this is an approach I can go for as it might suit my limitations.

My best guess at the moment is that "1-TC all-in" it means not having to buff up your food eco a lot to support 3 town centres, so in theory your economy can steadily support a Feudal/Early Castle Age military to keep on chugging. But what exactly should I be doing once I hit Feudal with my eco? It is a case of getting to 6-8 farms and stopping there, and getting all other vills onto wood and gold to support more and more archery ranges? And what to do if my archers are getting cleaned up/swarmed by skirmishers?

For some context, I've been trying to practice a drush against AI at around 8-9 minutes, into a small archer army from 2 ranges at about 15-16 minutes which I can try and build on. I've taken to selling my stone as soon as I hit Feudal to help with blacksmith upgrades for my archers, and to help buy my way to Castle Age where I can, which also sort of commits me to keep attacking in Castle Age as well. Playing against the AI, it doesn't take it long for it to get a lot of skirmishers out, so I try to add some light cav to keep the momentum going. But that requires more food economy to support, and I don't know if that food is better spent working up to a 2nd or 3rd town centre, or if I should be trying to get a stream of light cav going.

I know there are other ways to play as Saracens as well, but I'm trying to start off with something that feels achievable, and this approach has at least let me beat Hard and Hardest AI for the first time, and maybe can work in ranked play. How should I be developing 1 TC aggression as Saracens?

What are the fastest advance times possible?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 06:01 AM PDT

I just played around a bit to see how fast I could reach the feudal and castle age.

I managed to reach the feudal age at 6:40 with Mongols on Yucatan so I could make use of the faster hunting. I only built one house and made only 6 villagers (so 9 vils total) because I feel like if I made any more villagers they wouldn't pay for themselves before I clicked up and I'd also need to chop more wood to pay for the house. The only way I got food was hunting.

My fastest castle time is 11:57 with malay once again on Yucatan. I started fairly normal with 7 on sheep and 4 on wood. Then I put all villagers on food (mostly hunting) until I had 23 villagers. I then clicked up to feudal and once I had enough wood for the buildings I moved the 4 villagers on wood to food. When I reached the feudal age I used about 6 villagers to build a market and sold my stone to get enough gold. I also built a blacksmith simultaneously and once both buildings were complete I had just enough food to click up.

Obviously it's a terrible idea to click up this fast as you're entirely stuck once you reach the next age and can't do anything with it, but I don't care about that, I just want to reach the age as fast as possible.

This made me wonder what the fastest possible advance times would be. I am decent at the game but by no means a top player so it must be possible to do it faster than I did it. What are the fastest feudal, castle, and imperial times you know of?

    Milling 1x Shore Fish

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:38 AM PDT

I did a quick test with two villagers one trying farming and one fishing.

The first villager cut 60 wood then built a farm and farmed 175 food.

The second villager cut 100 wood then built a mill next to shore fish and managed to collect 185 food in the same time showing that this is faster than dark age farms.

Seems like this is a great option when available as you get slightly more food but you are left with a mill at the end.

I understand if its a water map dock and fish ships are a priority.

Also villagers walking up to 10-12 tiles to shore fish are faster than dark age farmers.

(This comment does not apply to power creep DE edition with fishermen dropping off at docks)

Is it worth making Samurai in Jap war?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 05:27 AM PDT

Is it worth making Samurai as bulk of your Japanese army against your Japanese opponent?

Samurai should obviously be created if the castle is under attack by rams or equivalent, and if you do not have Long Swordsman tech ready.

Samurai have +10/12 attack bonus against Unique units. The only unique units in Jap war would be Samurais. If you are making Samurai to get attack bonus against opponent, you yourself are also receiving attack bonus from opponent. So let's stick to Long Swordsman/Champion maybe?

Stats differences (common) (Samurai vs Sword line):

Additional techs: none vs Supplies (maybe)

Other factors: require an expensive castle with potential to skip barracks vs barracks itself

    Cost: 60F 30G vs 45F/60F 20G

Attack rate: 42 times per min vs 40 times per min

    Movement speed: 1 vs 0.9

Attack: -1 melee and another -1 against buildings compared to equivalent sword line

    Creation time: 9 s vs 21 s

Stats in Castle Age (Samurai vs Long Swordsman):

    Availability cost: 0 vs 300F 105G 90 seconds

Other factors: +1 melee armor compared to Long Swords

Stats in Imperial Age (Elite Samurai vs Champion):

    Upgrade cost: 950F 875G 60 sec vs 1050F 450G 175 sec

Other factors: +10 HP compared to Champions

Again, I am sorry SotL, 11

Production Garrison respects the 20% health health rule ... and my event progress kinda reset

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 12:00 AM PDT

Decided to fire up AoE2 to test if production garrisons (i.e. that you can garrison units by setting a gather point inside the building making them) respects the 20% health eject rule.

They do, thanks to an enemy seige ram and a lonely house and barrack combo helping.

... also, like my game thinks I need to do the summer event achievements, despite having all the mods and icons from when I finished it like a week ago.

What counters Ethiopian archer + onagers? Is it cheese to use it in low elo?

    Posted: 11 Sep 2020 01:01 AM PDT

So I got my buddies to get the game and we practiced and practiced and practiced against bots, and eventually, we started moving to play ranked 2v2's. I decided I'd play archer civs, because I found massing archers to be quite fun and I played with a mostly scout => xbow strategy. Trying all the options, I stopped at Ethiopians.

The thing is, after a 10 game win streak I feel like I'm cheesing the game. No opponent so far has had any chance to do anything against me. And what could they? The only thing I can think of is rushing to castle age and amassing 20+ knights before I have the time to make 50 xbows or mangonels. In imp, perhaps mass paladin spam? People have tried outnumbering me 3x with skrims but my micro is decent so 5 onagers with torsion engines immediately erase their army from existence. Another thing no opponents at this elo do is raiding the opponent's base - I swear I would've lost my composure at least half of those games if they sent like 3 knights to my base. I think the main thing is that people don't commit to counter-onagers enough. They make like 5, I kill them and then they give up completely.

On one hand, I feel kinda bad because I think mass archers are one of the most difficult strats to counter at low elo (I'm currently at around 1200), but on the other hand, I quite enjoy this strategy, so I'd like to know what areas I can work on to improve and be prepared to be countered with.

Viking Eco bonus (Wheel and handcart explained)

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 11:17 AM PDT

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUo1AwJRvoI&feature=youtu.be

Vikings are constantly talked about having one of the best eco bonuses in the game and are picked a ton at high elo play even when on land maps, I wanted to take a look at just how strong free wheel and HC is considering its harder to judge than a static +X% bonus such as Celt wood chopping or Mongol faster hunt.

Basically it comes down to if Vikings are given the opportunity to safely FC into boom they will have a much stronger eco than any other civ, as it both gives them a vil lead while also making early castle much smoother as their farm rate has already reached the hard farm cap of 24f/vil/minute. My testing also showed that Aztecs and Khmer, while having better farming rates than average without upgrades, only get about half of the effectiveness of wheelbarrow, and both should never prioritize hand cart as it has almost no effect on their farm gather rates

Sorry about the Potato mic. As an American AoE2 player I have to show support for Daniel with my headset mic

    Team Chat

    Posted: 10 Sep 2020 08:31 PM PDT

Does steam or aoe2 have a team chat? Is there a way to do this other than third party applications? I mostly play with randoms, is there any native voice chat? I've seen pro players doing voice chat a lot.

    Thanks
