Am I an addict? Posted: 05 Sep 2020 02:47 AM PDT I think about it all the time. I have nightmares of being tower rushed. I watch twitch streams when I can't play. I watch YouTube videos to get my build orders down. I downloaded reddit and discord so i can keep up to date on meta and latest developments. I play ranked games as often as possible. Assorted questions Posted: 05 Sep 2020 05:21 AM PDT I've been convinced by my friends to play some Aoe2DE and i've actually quite enjoyed it. I'm much more used to the other games in the Age series, so coming into Aoe2 there's quite a bit of information overload. I'd really appreciate a bit of help with some specific tips. Compared to the other Age games there's a huge amount of focus on micro and timings. Is it normal to struggle vs the AI (CD) when first playing the game? The game seems to be updated rather regularly and so older resources on what civ is "good at this" or "bad at this" or "best in this timeframe" can quickly become outdated. Rather then asking "Which civ is best for my use case", is there any kind of resource that's regularly updated on the strengths and weaknesses of the civilizations, and when they're most powerful? We usually like to play more closed off maps with big population battles, as we find it more enjoyable. From what poking around i've done it seems this is rather unpopular, so i'm not sure what response i'd get for asking, but which (default) maps are popular for these kinds of matches? What is the difference between "Black Forest", "Michi", and "Forest Nothing"? I'm assuming these are downloadable maps - does the AI work on player created maps as well as on default maps? Is there any recommended mods? Or is this looked down upon, and not permitted in ranked? I have tried the small trees mod, but there's been more then a few times where i've mistaken background scenery for stray trees I can't build over. Is "The art of war" mode sufficient for getting a grasp on basics such as build orders and whatnot, or is more thorough searching required? How do units choose whether to attack or not? Sometimes i'll have a bunch of guys right in the middle of an opponent's base, and they'll just sit there. Sometimes a bunch of my guys will just chase down one random stray cav to the ends of the map. On the same note, do monks auto-convert? I find trebuchets really clumsy and difficult to use, and i'm not even sure they're attacking half the time. Do they auto attack? What tips do you have for using them? Is there any general tips to microing, or does it really just come down to "git gud"? Especially with high pop cap battles, the scale of things seems super overwhelming with a ton of different unit types needing to be microed efficiently.
