    AoE2ers: who are they? A survey (UPDATED)

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 02:57 AM PST

    We need a better knowledge of the aoe2 community. It's so sad we play so many games with so many people who share such a strong passion with us without knowing absolutely nothing about them, other than some aoe2 stats, Elo, and the country they selected on Steam. Of course, we cannot hope to get to know in-depth many aoe2 fans, and even befriending a few of them will be extremely hard. But by answering this quick survey, we can at least get a general sense of who we are, what we do, and what we think.

    Here is the link to the survey: https://s.surveyplanet.com/aNAZwe0SU

    I will share the anonymous results of the survey in a month's time.

    Thank you for your cooperation!

    Remember that this is not a place to discuss politics (and music, films, or books for that matter). This thread is just to understand who aoe2 fans are, what they do and think, and why is that, not to decide whether what they do and think is good or bad.

    Why don't the Lithuanians have a campaign dedicated to them?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 09:01 PM PST

    Most of the new civilizations (Bulgarians, Tatars, and Cumans) introduced in The Last Khans (Definitive Edition) have a campaign focused on them; exception was Lithuanians. Instead, we got a campaign focused on the Incas, which is weird considering they are an old civilization, even if it was meant to be a replacement to the old campaign "El Dorado".

    However, the Lithuanians got nothing, and they don't even appear in most campaigns. They are the only civilization which is not playable in a single scenario, even an anthology one. At least civilizations such as Persians, Koreans, Vikings, Chinese, etc - all have at least one scenario where they are playable, even if it is only anthology.

    Why did the developers decided to not create anything for them? Will they create more scenarios in future patches?

    Discussion on Hand Cannons

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 04:10 PM PST

    With the November patch around the corner and rumours/hopes of changes (mostly buffs) to several classic units like the hand cannon and cavalry archer I was wondering what would be some reasonable buffs to the hand cannoneer specifically.

    They're supposed to fill an anti-infantry role and pretty much nothing else for most civs, while being the main power unit for some in the late game (italians, turks, portuguese, other gunpowder civs). Compared to a fully upgraded generic arbalester, fully-upgraded, generic hand cannoneers have:

    -5 hp (35 vs 40);

    +1 melee armour (1 vs 0);

    -1 base damage per second (17/3.45 vs 10/1.7), +2 dps to all infantry (27/3.45 vs 10/1.7);

    -1 range (7 vs 8);

    -35 percentage points accuracy (65% vs 100%);

    +7 seconds to train (34 vs 27)

    cost +5 gold (50 vs 45) and +20 food/wood (45 vs 25).

    So hand cannoneers are less tanky, deal less damage to all units except infantry and high-pierce armour units, have less range, are less accurate, and cost more. They're really supposed to occupy the "anti-infantry" niche. Two additional points:

    - Arbalesters actually have comparable dps to hand cannoneers versus the spear-line, since their +3 bonus damage and faster rate of fire means they both deal roughly 7.5 damager per second. Hand cannoneers in that comparison are therefore worse in every way.

    - It's much easier to dodge/micro against hand cannoneer shots than it is against arbalester shots, since arbalesters can hit moving targets with ballistics and for some reason have faster projectile speed (7 vs 5.5).

    The reasons we don't see them as often boil down to:

    1. few civs heavily rely on champions or their infantry unique units in the late-game, so there aren't many cases where hand cannoneers would be used. The two infantry units seen the most in the Imperial age are the spear-line and the eagle-line from meso civs. Against spearmen arbalesters are better, and against eagle warriors champions are better. There are only four civs that have hand cannoneer but not serviceable champions to deal with eagle warriors: khmer (no champions), persians (no champions), tatars (no champions), lithuanians (no final armour upgrade or supplies). These are pretty much the only civs that should consider hand cannoneers as an answer to eagle warriors if they were up against a meso civ.
    2. It is much easier to mass arbalesters than it is to mass hand cannoneers. Arbalesters are cheaper, train faster, can be massed and upgraded from crossbowmen in the castle age, and don't need a technology that takes long to research to unlock (chemistry). The transition to hand cannoneers is therefore awkward, too expensive and takes way too long.
    3. If we factor in accuracy and the fact that only 65% of hand cannoneer shots hit their intended target while every arbalester shot hits its target, arbalesters have a much higher dps even against all infantry (0.65*(17/3.45) = 5.1 vs 10/1.7 = 5.9). Hand cannoneers are too inaccurate and worse at their intended niche than arbalesters are.
    4. Of the five civs that have bonuses for their hand cannoneers (Italians, Spanish, Portuguese, Turks, Indians), two of them have access to strong arbalesters (Italians with more armour and Portuguese with less gold cost). There are therefore only three civilizations where it kind of makes sense to aim for hand cannoneers as a long-term strategy goal.

    Of the 18 civs that have access to fully upgradeable hand cannoneers, only Khmer, Persians, Tatars, Lithuanians, Turks, Spanish, and Indians should really ever consider using them. All other civs either have solid champions or arbalesters to deal with spears or eagle warriors.

    In only one strategy do hand cannoneers really shine, and that is the fast imp on Arena for Turks. If we think hand cannoneers should be buffed, we have to suggest buffs that do not make this strategy overpowered.

    I understand hand cannoneers don't have to be a valid option for many civs. For the most part, every civ has multiple options to deal with different enemy army combinations and strategies. However, I think hand cannoneers are very underwhelming at the one thing they're supposed to be good at, especially when compared to the alternative unit (arbalester) that more civs have access to. Hand cannoneers are pretty much useless for civs that have access to serviceable arbalesters and champions (Japanese, Saracens, Byzantines, Italians, Portuguese, Koreans, Malians).

    Do you guys think hand cannoneers should be buffed? What buff would you suggest?

    What are your favorite mods especially for FFA games?

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 06:54 AM PST

    Some of the guys in our discord have enjoyed playing with several mods lately. What we have done so far 1. CBA 2. Exploding villagers (one of our guys made some adjustments to the original making villagers faster, no repairs and no walls. Very aggressive the way we like it) 3. Dodgeball FFA and team dodgeball 4. Random costs 5. Shared civ bonus Possibly others I can't think of right now. I'm not a fan of some others we tried such as 9x tech and war elephant trebuchets.

    The lobby system is terrible.

    Posted: 16 Nov 2020 02:50 AM PST

    Why can't I choose multiple servers instead of 1 or all?

    Why can't I choose the specific map? all I want is black forest.

    Why doesn't it save preferences between lobbies? I turn password games off and have to do it again all the time.

    Why does it show full lobbies with no option to turn it off?

    Compared to other games, the lack of filters and the insane decision to reset them all the time makes the lobby incredibly frustrating.

    I can't be the only one who wants changes?

    Making fishing ships just for traps

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 07:56 PM PST

    Wondering how efficient it is, while booming, to create fishing ships just to give them traps on maps where there is water but the fish runs out quickly (e.g. ponds on black forest). Basically, treating your dock as a TC for most of castle age. Meanwhile you would have more lumberjacks and fewer farmers in your vill eco.

    It would cost more resources (175w per ship setup vs 50f+60w per farmer) but the dock itself is cheaper than a TC and ships collect faster than vills.

    Has anyone done the math on this or had experience with this approach?
