Announcing the Age of Advent AoEII Advent Calendar!

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 07:08 AM PST

    Hello everyone!

Do you miss the nostalgia of opening an Advent Calendar to see what piece of chocolate/scene would greet you?

Have you never done that and are seeking a rush of anticipation and excitement?

Are you sick of playing the same damn civs and strategies all the time?

If you answered yes to any of these, then I have just the thing for you: Age of Advent.

Each day at 1200 JST (0300 GMT), an advent box will open revealing a civilization and strategy to be played. There are no repeats for civs or strategies.

These were all randomized, so of course there will be both typical and unorthodox strategies for certain civilizations. The goal here is to get people playing different civs while providing fun, difficult, or downright impossible challenges. Who knows, you may even pull off a mastapiece of your own!

Moreover, I would like to add a casting element to this. If you play a game that you think is exceptionally interesting, well-played, or straight-up wacky, and if you would like to volunteer the rec for casting, please message me and we can discuss the details.

I will stream cast requests on Twitch and upload them to YouTube as well, so hopefully this will become a series we can enjoy throughout the holiday season :D

Of course, any other content creators who want to participate, cast, or upload gameplay with the challenges provided are more than free to do so. Just mention me somewhere, please ^^

The link to the advent calendar is below. If you want to see what civ/challenges open up every day, feel free to give it a go!

    https://calendar.myadvent.net/?id=6615a158168bbccce57d8fe9cf43b006

If you're asking how this is different from just picking a random civ and having someone tell you what to do, well...it's more in the spirit of the season, I guess? Don't be such a Scrooge!

Every Unique Unit Compared to History (Part 6 - The African Kingdoms)

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:12 PM PST

    Heya m8s

    Welcome back to the series!!
if you haven't seen the other parts:

    - part 1

    - Part 2

    - Part 3

    - Part 4

    - part 5

Today we're going to look at the civs of the African Kingdoms, which are the second FE expansion civs. They are quite obscure in the way that I didn't know much about them when researching them. So, without further ado, let's get started.

    Berbers- Camel Archer

Ability: Cavalry archer with an attack bonus vs. cavalry archers.

What it Was: Like I've said before, the people of the Middle East used camels to travel across the desert. Both the Arabs and the Berbers did it. Camels were resilient in the desert, and so that made them better for transport than normal horse.

Significance to Berbers: The Berbers lived in the harsh north African desert, which is probably why they have a cavalry unique unit.

How the Game Relates is to History: The Anti-cavalry archer bonus probably has to do with the anti-cavalry aspect of camels that I talked about in previous installments of the series. They are also a cavalry archer unit themselves, which makes them great at raiding, a specialty of the Berbers.

    Berbers- Genitour

    Ability: Mounted Skirmisher.

What it Was: The Jinete, or Genitour, were light cavalry created by the Spanish to fight the armies of the Moors. They were an important part of the Reconquista, and were originally going to be the Spanish UU (which I talked about earlier).

Significance to Berbers: The Berbers also represent the moors in various scenarios, which had cavalry that the Jinete were most likely based off of. Other than that, I have no clue why the Berbers have Genitours.

How the Game Relates is to History: Jinetes were supposed to harass their enemies to death. Skirmishers are relatively weak, but are still a very important unit. Jinetes also wielded javelins, the Skirmisher's weapon.

    Ethiopians - Shotel Warrior

Ability: Cheap infantry unit with high creation speed.

What it Was: A shotel was a curved sword used by the Ethiopians.

Significance to Ethiopians: Shotel Warriors, or Shotelai were part of the elite fighting force of some Ethiopian emperors' armies.

How the Game Relates is to History: The Shotelai were devastating, and one historian said that they: "flew through the air like the eagle and spun on the ground like the avalanche" They could hook their enemies with the curved part of the sword. This is probably why they are a quick raiding unit.

    Malians - Gbeto

Ability: Quick infantry unit with a high ranged attack.

What it Was: The Gbeto was not a unit at all. Gbeto literally means "huntress" in the Fon language. One could argue that she is based off of the Dahomey Amazons, which had originated from a group of Elephant huntresses. However, The Amazons were formed in the 1700's, outside of the aoe2 timeline.

Significance to Malians: Any way you put it, the Gbeto has no significance to the Malians. The Fon people were from Benin, and so was the Kingdom of Dahomey (Now known as Benin in the modern day). My guess is that the Malians are based off of West Africa in general, but I have no clue

How the Game Relates is to History: The Gbeto's long ranged attack is most likely based off of the fact that The Dahomey Amazons wielded rifles, bows, or other guns. This would make sense since gunmen did not need to be so heavily armored, but could still pack quite a punch from a distance.

    Portuguese- Organ Gun

Ability: Siege weapon that fires a volley of bullets. Very effective against large groups of units.

What it Was: Organ guns were cannons that fired many, smaller cannonballs towards enemies. The Organ Gun definitely does stack up to history this way.

Significance to Portuguese: Although the Organ Gun was invented by the British, during the Reconquista, the Portuguese needed powerful, fast reloading weapons to fight. (Source here)

How the Game Relates is to History: I mean, its a gun that shoots lots of cannonballs like a shotgun. Not much else to say here.

    Portuguese - Caravel

Ability: Boat effective vs. large fleets because each shot damages multiple units.

What it Was: During the Renaissance, Europeans had invented a new type of ship "The Caravel". The ship was not like your normal galley, because it was way bigger and could go through the oceans. They were vital for the Age of Exploration.

Significance to Portuguese: The Portuguese used Caravels on their expeditions around Africa, and into the Indian Ocean. The Portuguese started the Age of Exploration, and they could only do so with Caravels.

How the Game Relates is to History: The shot damaging multiple units is likely a nod to the fact that Caravels used cannons instead of arrows. With cannons, fleets of ships could be destroyed way more easily than they could before.

Anyway thats all for this time. Next up, it will be time for the Rajas to Rise.

    Devs are killing DM

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:39 AM PST

I don't get why DM is so forsaken. I know the community is much smaller than RM community but there is people who love this game mode and try to keep it alive. There is DM world cup, little tournament with cash prize from "little" streamers, showmatch and in the history of AOE, DM has always been played. Actually, developers aren't helping at all. They are making "fast game" lobby without DM. Honestly DM realy need to be in fast game lobby.

New players who want to try this game mode can only do lobby or ranked. The ranked queue is meh because there is not enough players to do fair games. So what happen? New players are getting rushed for their first game and after that, they just don't want to launch this game mode anymore. If there is at least a fast game mode which they can't play without any rank, it could be fine for them to train in. And I don't know any game mode which can be faster than a DM game, you start with so much ressources that you can fight minute one.

I don't even talk about balance changes. We know that the game don't have to be balanced around DM because RM is the core game, but some minor improvement could be made without affecting RM (like nerfing siege onager, they are just to strong in DM and barely used in RM...)

So yeah, I realy don't understand why DM have no love. It is so interesting for new players to play and get used to the game. Every low ranked RMgame are booming into imperial age then attack. It could attract some players to get used with the game.

What kept alive AOE 2 is his strong community, community tournament, and work from passionate people. Please dear devs, consider everyone in our game!

    Thanks!

(Sorry for mistakes or not so good English)

What strategies from the 2v2 WC have you started implementing?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 08:38 AM PST

The group stage of the 2v2 WC has offered us some great games, with more on the way in the round of 16. What strats that you've seen have you started implementing in your 2v2 games?

The biggest thing I picked up on was building a 3rd range on the way up to castle to pump crossbows in castle age. I used to just stick with 2 ranges until mid-late castle. We've immediately shot up from ~1650 to 1800 in TG elo.

Also, sending food to the knight player. I now immediately send food after getting to imp (and sometimes in castle if knight player is struggling with production). This helps knight player get to paladin asap.

    What's everyone else been doing?

Ever since the update I've been experiencing constant lag

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:01 PM PST

So as the title says since the big update everything has been laggy / borderline unplayable sometimes.

I don't have the fanciest of setups, I just play on my laptop (lenovo ideapad 330s, Processor AMD Ryzen 5 25000u, 8GB ram).

Preupdate I never had an issue with games lagging, but now doesn't matter the mode, ranked, quick play, BR (forget about it 11).

Idk if anyone has had a similar issue or if theres anything I can do

On the number of different military types

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:21 AM PST

I'm a brand new player and i was wondering if you should focus only 2 of 3 military types(inf/arch/cav) per game in order to play your civ's strengths and keep upgrade costs low. You should still be able to counter every unit this way, right? For example: play brits, never build stables. Thoughts?

So they all have Age of Empires II (2013), which costs 20€ on steam. However, there is Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, which costs 10€. Can I buy this one and play with them? Or is that impossible?

    Quick Play Unranked ELO

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 03:25 AM PST

So I think Unranked ELO just became relevant. Does anybody know if Quick Play uses unranked ELO for the matches ? In that case, it just became relevant ! I have a WAY higher unranked ELO than ranked ELO, since it also takes AI games into account. So now, I'm playing against way better players ! I like the idea of Quick Play, but until the Unranked ELO gets leveled, there's plenty of defeat in the future !
