If there's one thing I learned about this sub in he last 12 hours...

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 03:08 AM PST

... it's that people here will find an excuse to complain about anything these days.

Seriously, 80% of the posts here are like:

    1. Waaaaah! $10 for an expansion pack is too much! We're all soooooo pooooor even though we can afford our fancy gaming PCs and spend more money on booze/cigarettes/junk food weekly.
    2. Waaaaaaaah! Why didn't they add the (random asian/african/american civ) that I've been creating proposal threads on r/aoe2 for 15 years instead of these two European ones nobody asked for! Forgotten Empires hates the (random asian/african/american civ)!!!!!11
    3. Waaaaaaaaaaaah! These new civs are so unbalanced and will break the game!!!! Even though I know nothing about their tech trees, upcoming buffs and nerfs, or any other features to be changed between now and the release date.
    4. Oh and here's the best: WAAAAAAAAAAAH! AOE2 WILL BECOME PAY TO WIN!!! MULTIPLAYER WILL BE TOO UNBALANCED!! GODDAMN FORGOTTEN EMPIRES HAS ABANDONED US HARDCORE OLD-SKOOL AOE2 GAMERS FOR ALL THESE NEW FANS OF THE GAME, EVEN THOUGH ATTRACTING NEW FANS ARE WHAT KEEPS THIS SERIES GOING STRONG. REEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!1111

Coming from somebody who has played the original Age of Empires games in the late 90s/early 00s and cherished the experience from back then until now, the current amount of salt, misguided and fake outrage is so cringe-inducing and embarrassing to read on this sub. It's like how everyone reacts to an early trailer for a film that's still in development. Step back from the ledge folks, lots of things can change between now and the release date.

Here's an idea, instead of whining about every little thing that Forgotten Empires does, how about giving them some thanks for reviving a game that was 13 years past its last official expansion from Ensemble Studios, rebuilding the AoE community to where it's thriving the most it has been in 15+ years, and getting near-monthly updates/patches out, making new campaigns, game modes, challenges, rewards, etc. for a 20 year old game. How many other 20+ year old games have that going for them? I've played many games that the developers forgot about a few years after release only to fade into obscurity, so maybe we should be grateful that AoE is still going strong and stop worrying about every little thing.

    About the Burgundian Campaign

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 02:26 PM PST

What you can get for $9.99 (or a bit more, or less)

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 06:56 PM PST

    1 pack of cigarettes:

    $7.50 USA

    £10.80 UK

    €10 France

    Starbucks coffee:

    $2.75 x 3 in the US

    $2.88 x 3 in the UK

    $5 x 2 in Oslo, Norway

    $4.41 x 2 in Paris, France

    Beer at a pub/bar/brasserie:

£3-5 in the UK for a pint, so 2 beers in the UK

$4-7 in the US, so 2 (not great, not terrible) beers in the US

€4.50 in France, so 2 alright beers in France

Seeing a 2-hour movie in theaters? Forget it! First of all that'll cost you more than a tenner in most Western countries, and second of all it's corona so stay in and behave.

    OR...

You could get hours and hours of enjoyment and memeing with the new DE expansion. Probably 10 hours at least on the campaigns alone (so 99 cents an hour) and way more online.

$9.99 will support new patches and updates to the game, remind Microsoft the AoE2 is still alive, keep dedicated developers and community members such as Robo employed, and finance sick tournaments that will hopefully keep getting sicker.

Don't compare it to the price of the base game, think of it as a one-time subscription renewal to this great thing called AoE2!

    Wanted: Civilization balance experts !

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 03:23 PM PST

Hey everyone! Just got off the phone with the devs and they are absolutely BLOWN AWAY by all the balance experts in this subreddit! In fact they've now realized they clearly dont know what they're doing and would love to have some of you guys come in and just take over the civ balance. Just drop your email address and a short message about why you, someone with no game development experience, knows better!

And don't worry guys, they got the message loud and clear, no more expansions from now on! Only bug fixes and new occasional challenges. Good work everyone !!

Why the negativity on new expansion?

    Posted: 15 Dec 2020 02:04 PM PST

I just scrolled through Reddit and noticed a lot of negativity towards the new civs/ new expansions and I am quite confused.

First of all, some people accused it of being Pay2Win, which is definitely not the case. The devs would definitely try to balance the civs (just like they did with Lit/ Cumans/ Step Lancers/ etc last year) so if one does not want to pay for the dlc, they would still remain competitive in the multiplayer scene.

Secondly, some people said new civs are unnecessary. This is half true. However, one needs to think about the game's long-term survival. The devs need money to maintain servers, fund tournaments, fix bugs, civ balance, etc. With AOE2 is a non-subscription based game with a starting price of 20$, it is hard to maintain the game economically. This time is a very different time comparing to 20 years ago. There are a lot of other games/ competitors. The game survives 20 years ago does not mean it will now in a more competitive gaming market.

Thirdly, people said the new civs are too OP. Well, we have not seen the full tech tree yet. What if the civs only get knights and not cavalier, what if the unique units are super weak, etc. I am also not against adding new features (AOE3 like features) into AOE2. This will help the devs to understand whether these new features will succeed (which could help inform them about aoe4). When the cumans able to build the 2nd town center, suddenly the whole meta shift. Playing new civs for me is like exploring whole new games.

Lastly, it is 10$, a lot of DLC for other games are 50$+. I am however not a fan of 2 new European civs. I hope it will be some other underrepresented region but I am excited about the new expansions/ new campaign either way!

So, why is there so much negativity on the expansion? People just do not like change?

Why I am against the two new civilizations (for civ choice not DLC reasons)

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 07:05 AM PST

    There are too many civilizations.

If you are going to add more, maybe add another meso or african civ. north america/africa/asia are so big, were there really no other empires or large kingdoms there?

I am fine with it being a DLC. The original game was well priced, and it's not pay to win because the devs care about balance. Remember how hard they nerfed the expansion civs? battle elephants, malian halbs, berber knights discount, Portuguese arquebus, arambiai, and steppe lancers. Likewise, I am not worried about them being OP.

    Questions:

Sicilian overlaps with Italian and Byzantine empire. Maybe the DLC will help me respect the differences between these three but it's confusing to me at the moment. Same with Burgundian and Franks. So like are the Burgundians a different group of people than the Franks (are they different ethnicities)? How about Sicilians vs Italians? Sorry if I am coming off as uncultured.

What do you think of making the Iroquois Confederacy a civilization? I was also thinking something Pacific like Hawaiian empire, but that I believe is too modern.

"Land military units absorb 33% of all incoming bonus damage"

The Viper's facial expressions sums up my feelings about this bonus

(and yes, I know that this bonus might be nerfed maybe even before the DLC is released but IMO, the percentage is not the issue about this bonus. The core principle is)
