Empire Wars Build order tutorial - Eco-heavy Vikings Crossbow+Knight

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:21 AM PST

    Hi everyone!

I decided to start making build order guides for Empire Wars for those that are planning to participate in Red Bull Wololo, or just planning to learn some EW build orders. My first guide is finished, and showcases a very strong but greedy build order with vikings:

[ Historic ][ Suggestion ] Please give the new Burgundian their unique roofing style!

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:52 AM PST

It's basically a copy/paste of something I wrote on the officials forums. Since there is a huge part of the community here, I thought it could be great to give visibility here as well ! :D

I know it may sounds like nothing, but Dijon and Bourgogne is where I am from, and it's very historical to have such mosaic roof !

You can have here the french wikipedia about those special roofing.

    Here some specific links :

I could totally see this kind of roofing on the existing building shown in the screenshot :

I know it takes time, I'm also aware the expansion is already shipped to be released, but I wish FE would take time to actually makes slights changes to the roofing for the Burgundian buildings (just the roofing, not the whole building), considering it's also a paid expac, and they've already added a different Castle.

It would be paying attention to details, and it would be truly amazing.

Ooohh myyyyy !!! Finaly !! I understood that going feudal at 20-21 pop is not working. And going castle as soon as possible seems to be the right move !! I'm sooo happy !!!

So what beats Franks Economy in 1v1 ranked

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 01:27 AM PST

    So what beats Franks Economy

I am playing at 800 – 900 Elo and Franks Just own, age up quicker, get Castles quicker, do everything quicker (Knights, Farming, Castles, earlier Age up, massing armies) than normal civs it would seem.

Stats I've won 90% of my game like 10 or so after switching to Franks, having never played them before with only limited 100 games experience. I just feel like the Civ is overpowered, even Aztecs seem to fall behind. ( edit prior to Franks I was playing Vikings a lot)

I have noticed that I get to Castle age 16min -17min on average vs my opponents (18-20mins) typically with 20 villager feudal build.

2nd of all, Franks are one of the most popular picks and percentage of wins on AOE stats at every Level <1000 Elo, <1600 elo, and >1600 elo…

    A) Which Civs are faster at advancing Ages and have quicker economies?

    B) Which other civs can beat a 13 minute castle age for franks with castle drop on Arena?

    C) what strategies do you use against franks that win? which civs do you use?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEM0nzdA1xE

BavarianBarbarian (800 elo ) Franks vs Vikings - Leopardo Amur (1300 elo )

A powerful 19 pop scout rush : 2000+ Elo Hera (franks) wins vs Lierrey ( tuetons)

    How to learn this game

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 12:30 AM PST

So I'm a fairly new player. But I've known the game for quite some time, when I was younger I always used to watch my nephew play this game. Now I finnaly get my own hands on it, definitly some nostalgia. Anyways, I already knew the basics: make sure no idle TC or vills, scout, basic unit counters, etc. . But I struggled A LOT with getting my eco going (I didn't know that build orders were a thing untill a week ago... lol).

So I found a mod, which is fairly popular, I forgot the name but it is basically a step by step build order guide in-game. So I began with practicing the fast castle into cav. I did a couple of times, got the hang of luring my boar, and the hotkeys. And after 7-8 tries I got an A+. This felt like an achievement, but at the same time it felt like I wasn't really learning the game, it felt like I was studying.

I learned that after 6 vils to food, send 4 to wood, without thinking about why I should do that, and why 4 and not 5? All these kind of questions, because I don't have a feeling with the game. In other words: I don't have a sense of how fast a vill gathers and how much I need to get to a certain goal. Which leads to me not being adaptable, at all. So my question is, should I just keep going on with practicing build orders? And by doing many different ones, I will maybe begin to see some paterns? Or should I do something different?

900elo plateau. Is someone willing to watch my recordings?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 07:13 AM PST

    Hi

I've been playing for around 9 months, only playing black forest & Arena I reached 1200 elo ( playing exclusively Mongols and 3 TC booming). I decided to play Arabia as it's what the pros play.

I plummeted down to 700 elo and now after grinding only on Arabia I've plateaued 880-900 elo. ( Playing mirror civ, Chinese or Mayans)

I would love for someone to watch my recording to help me get better or, if there is a service that already exists?

Is there a mod that lets you move icons around? And where does one down load mods?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 05:27 AM PST

When you click on a vill, you get their menu at the bottom left. When you have a bill selected you see build economic building or military building. I want a mod that lets me move those icons around inside the menu. It's easier for me to remember when things are in certain positions. I want to move the create farm and house icons more to the right.

    Color is stuck on blue

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 11:30 PM PST

    Hey all,

Tried google, I have unique player colors turned on.

No matter what I do in mulitplayer games my color changes to blue, if I select another team as blue, then we both turn blue.

Really irritating, I end up having to make my friend the host so I can play the color i want.

Anyone have any advice here please? Playing AOE 2 DE via steam install.

Have tried alt+g etc in game.

Edit: this is only when I am the host of the lobby.

What's the smallest change to break a civ?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:58 AM PST

I came up with an interesting thought experiment: What would be the most minor tweaks to civilizations which would make them broken/OP?

Example: Mayans starting with +1 pop space.

-> Would normally make no difference at all, but for Mayans it would get you ahead from the start and all the other bonuses would come into play much earlier.

Chinese with normal food start would be another (as it would not even be a bonus) but probably it could be regarded quite a major buff to an already existing bonus, therefore hard to compare.

    So the idea is that

    a) it got to be a change/bonus that would normally make no huge difference (an advantage as small as possible)

    b) it should make civs actually super good in performance, not only fit the civ's identity

Counter-example for b) Lithuanians knowing the spots of relics (like Burmese) -> not a big bonus and it helps Lithuanians but more in terms of playability, as you usually should be able to find some relics anyways, it doesn't make Lithuanians really stronger than they already are when played correctly.

How to counter imp camels in TG

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:37 AM PST

My friends and I (at best 2.1 k TG ELO), always seem to get clapped by teams with an Indian pocket, and we are a touch reluctant to just join the crowd. Our typical civ line up is saracens-magyars-lith-britons. Any thoughts on what can be done to deal with camels? Could just be noob, but seems like the 3/4 relic lith paladins just get wrecked by the camels.
Usually doing scouts-kts or FC-kts in pocket, with flanks doing maa-archers (although the saracen guy can be a wild card :P )

    How does EAPM work?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2020 08:00 AM PST

So I recently found the website https://www.aoe2insights.com which has a really cool feature in the match analysis section that shows EAPM (effective actions per min) for you and your opponent. I was wondering if anyone knew what goes into that and how useful it is? The reason I ask is that I've had matches were my opponent had twice the eapm as me but I still won. If I'm shift queuing a lot would that lower my eapm? For context, my apm is usually 110 but eapm mean is 20, but I've played in games where someone's eapm is 60 but it seems unlikely their apm would be 300.

    Horse archers anyone?

    Posted: 28 Dec 2020 01:02 PM PST

I've watched dozens if not hundreds of online games since I bought the game not long ago and noticed that barely anyone ever recruits horse archers. Why's that? Every unit type seems to have a reason and niche to exist, and so they do exist on the battlefield. But not the horse archers. It seems they are considered bad for some reason otherwise they wouldn't have been so ignored.
