Posted: 02 Jan 2021 02:19 PM PST Just wanted to share with you guys how great it feels to be back to AoE. I used to play AoE II conquerors back in 2000-2004, but it all stopped very fast and since then "life took over" However, my son found now during the holidays a chance to play again over Steam and I can't even begin to tell how awesome it felt to be back! I was never particularly good, just an average player back in the says (1800-1850 at zone, for those of you who are old school like me...) and today, after practicing little against AI, I decided to try online. I labeled the game for noobs, got castle rushed big time, lost my original TC and never even reached imperial age, but survived still somehow, mostly with fast reactions, forward thinking and good team mate. Really worth it, even though my hands were shaking and I was all but decisive with my moves. I am RUSTY!!! Most importantly - my son got super excited about AoE and wants to learn more. So, all good, gg, and happy to be joining this community - after WHATTTT 20 years???? [link] [comments]

Would the kurds work as a civ? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 01:58 AM PST First of all I'm sorry if this post considered as low effort because my english is limited. So i know that most of the community is tired of "new civ" questions but I always wondered would the kurds work as a civ? I don't know how to structure the kurds but i feel like they would work more as an infantry civ In the line of halberdier And I always felt like the tatars hill bonus was more appropriate for the kurds and the reason is the kurds are native people of mountainous region of western asia have been living and fighting in the mountains since forever. And there is an old quote: "We have no friends but the mountains" So do you think that a kurdish civ could work in aoe2? Look forward to the replies. Thanks. [link] [comments]

13:09 minute Castle time with Saracens? Posted: 02 Jan 2021 10:11 PM PST I played an 1100 ELO Arabia game against a Saracen player and I haven't been able to replicate their castle age time no matter how hard I try. They hit castle age at 13:09 with 19+2 villagers. Sold stone and pushed 3 deer, but I wasn't able to pull it off without idling my TC to click up, and my opponent got housed at one point so it can't be too hard to pull off, especially when spending a lot of vill time to wall off every resource. Watching the recorded game they built no farms before castle age and would have needed to buy at least 700 food at the market before clicking up to castle age. They did have 5 gold miners and sold stone, but that's still a lot to buy so early in the game, even as Saracens. Is this something that people are doing now? If anybody has a guide on a 19 pop FC into a 4 TC boom with Saracens I need to see it. Truth be told, I'm a little suspicious about game data manipulation. My opponent never got a gold mining upgrade, despite having an eco very heavily dependent on gold and playing a game that lasted well into imperial age. Maybe a subtle value change to base gold mining rate? Between that and the fact that I was playing against a new account, I'm suspicious. If somebody with more experience than me could look at this recorded game and tell me whether or not this is a legit build people could potentially pull off themselves that would be great. I couldn't find the build online but would love to be able to hit those castle times in a game. [link] [comments]

New to the franchise, which game should I get? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 07:17 AM PST The age of empire games look very fun, but I've never played any of them. I'd probably be bad, for a beginner which game do you recommend for me? [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jan 2021 07:17 AM PST I've seen numerous high level players talk and complain about the Saracens being kind of problematic due to the conjunction of the market bonus and archers shredding buildings ever since they were buffed in DE. Note that most people agree that they are not exactly OP, but that their castle age rushes with crossbows can be very frustrating if executed properly. As a Saracen nerd, I've been thinking of how the civ could be rebalanced to be a bit less one-dimensional. I expect the developers probably will continue to tweak them so it's probably a question of when it happens rather than if. Personally, I think the market bonus is a lot of fun to use and makes Saracens quite unique, so my ideas work around keeping it the same and changing out the problematic archer bonus for something that will lead to much less powerful all-ins. Rework
These changes brings Camel Riders from 120 -> 132 hit points in Castle Age and Mamluks from 85 -> 94. In Imperial age, Heavy Camels would go from 140 -> 175 and Mamluks would go from 100 -> 125. Currently in Post-Imp with Zealotry, Heavy Camels have 170 and Mamluks have 130, so these values end up being roughly the same after deleting Zealotry. So this rework essentially switches out the camel hit points with the archer building damage. I think it makes more sense to emphasize Saracens as a camel civilization with good archers rather than the other way around. The Madrasah UT ought to be changed while we're talking about tweaking the Saracens because I think everyone knows it's one of the absolute worst UT's in the game. I doubt it would be particularly amazing with this change, but switching the discount to the front loaded cost might make it feel less pointless. Needing your units to die to get the benefit from them is very counterintuitive and if you are protecting your monks well then it doesn't even do anything. This change does not buff a monk rush but helps enable heavy monk play in the late castle/imperial ages and pays off after 5 monks which sounds reasonable on paper. The numbers may need to be tweaked slightly (Mamluks could get more base hp for Elite or reduced cost for example) because this could possibly end up being a nerf despite saving the cost on Zealotry, but I think the switch itself is reasonable. Also, I know the Incendiaries tech is basically just a version of Obsidian Arrows that isn't OP, but I have a feeling Obsidian Arrows will get nerfed or changed eventually anyway so I think the tech makes a lot more sense on Saracens 11 Anyway if anyone has thoughts on these ideas let me know. I think changing the market bonus could be possible (say staggered to 10%/7.5%/5% or 15%/10%/5%) but like I said it is the most unique part of the Saracens and thus I would prefer if they changed something else to make the civ less of a one-trick pony. Looking for a parent/young child "team" to play against... Posted: 02 Jan 2021 03:11 PM PST I just (like yesterday) started teaching my 5-year-old the game. We did the first few scenarios of William Wallace, and he did... well, about as well as you'd expect from a kindergartener. But he's really, really excited. I know I could put him up against easy AI, but that's not the same, and I think even the lowest end of ranked games or even noob lobbies will be way, way above him, at least for a while. So I was wondering if there's anyone out there in a similar situation: a parent (or maybe older sibling?) who can play (I'm 900ELO with over 200 games, so no expert, but I know what I'm doing) with a young kid around kindergarten, to try either some 1v1 with parent coaching, or some 2v2, or something like that. We're most likely to play Sunday afternoons Eastern US (GMT -5). Anyone out there? [link] [comments]
Trying to get better at the game, ugh. Slow learning curve. Any advice? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:42 AM PST So I haven't spent any time trying to review any good strategies, but first, about me so you can give maybe some sort of advice. Been playing AoE for literally ever. Used to be pretty competitive online with AoE3, however thats going back a ways, to a time where I also had good internet. I've spent the last year or so on AoE2de doing a bit of... what I like to do. 1 vs 7, extreme difficulty, lots of cheats, etc. I enjoy the economy side of the game, and defense. Which means I've never tried to actually get half decent. Until recently... So, I can beat easy, I can beat standard 100% of the time, but on Moderate, IF the AI gets a jump on me, its hopeless. If they don't show up for 20 minutes, I can defend their first wave and attack and conquer. Tl;dr My early game is dead slow, like 15-18 Feudal, 27-30 castle. What can an experienced player do to start getting competitive, if they've played for like 20 years but never actually bothered getting good at real game play? I know what I should be doing, but, yeah. Somebody link me to a good few early game strategies! (I can beat even Hard AI if I set a half hour treaty, its JUST my early game that sucks) [link] [comments]
Posted: 03 Jan 2021 05:31 AM PST My friends are getting married soon and they both are huge fans of AoE. I would like to make a video about them and/or the wedding using the campaign cutscenes as a template (the parchment with drawing and text, where I would insert new texts and maybe drawings). Is there any template somewhere I could use? I understand that the video material of AoE campaigns is copyrighted, however this could be a "fair use" according to my understanding (I own a copy of the game and so do them). If it isn't, please let me know in the comments. [link] [comments]

Dracula mission 2 - return of the dragon glitch? Posted: 03 Jan 2021 03:23 AM PST Before I made it to Imperial, I was no longer in control of my units - they had switched to neutral and suddenly I was playing as Hungary - green. How does this even happen? Seems like the scenario is about defending 'Bran castle' and keeping Dracula alive - not even playing as Dracula makes no sense. There was no prompt or speech. Did I hit some hotkey that switches team control? Very confused [link] [comments] |
