Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 1: Khmer vs Persians

    Posted: 13 Jan 2021 08:31 AM PST

We start our funniest round of discussions with the elephant apocalypse!

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Byzantines vs Mayans, and next up is the Khmer vs Persians!

    Khmer: Siege and Elephant civilization

    • No buildings required to advance in Age or to unlock other buildings
    • Farmers do not require drop-off sites; continuously add food to stockpile
    • Battle Elephants move +10% faster
    • Villagers can garrison inside houses (max 5 per house)
    • TEAM BONUS: Scorpions +1 range
    • Unique Unit: Ballista Elephant (Can cut trees in Castle Age and that's about it)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Tusk Swords (Battle Elephants +3 attack)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Double Crossbow (Ballista Eles and Scorps fire an additional projectile)

    Persians: Cavalry civilization

    • Start with +50w, +50f
    • TCs and Docks 2x hp; +10/15/20% work rate in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • TEAM BONUS: Knights +2 attack vs archers
    • Unique Unit: War Elephant (A freakin' huge elephant idk what else you'd expect)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Kamandaran (Archer-line now costs 60w instead of 25w, 45g)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Mahouts (War Elephants move +30% faster)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Really good set of civs to discuss imo! Khmer still retain their powerful eco throughout the entire game, access to some pretty powerful options with Arbs, Cavalier, good trash, and good siege. However, the areas in which they truly excel - elephants and scorps - are not really viable in this setting all too often. Meanwhile, Persians have a similar story with a very powerful eco at all stages of the game, but can struggle when it comes to fielding large armies of heavy cavalry and gunpowder. Which pachyderm powerhouse do you favor here?
    • On closed maps, the dynamics between these civs become a bit stranger imo. Khmer are going to be very powerful on most closed map game types - everything from 1v1 Arena to 4v4 BF. However, since their loss of BBC, the civ has acquired a very noticeable weakness to that unit. Persians, meanwhile, have the time to boom into their super-powerful army, but themselves can still get overrun in early Imperial Age. This is the one situation where they can semi-frequently get to War Eles though! Who do you favor here, and in which settings specifically?
    • In team game pocket on most maps, both of these civs are easily among the very best. A patch or two ago, I would have said that Khmer are so insanely strong that even Persians cannot compete, however, Khmer eles now being slower is a big hit, as pocket mobility is indeed very important, and even their farmers are a bit worse. Now, we have the dynamic of both civs having excellent economies and cavalry options - Khmer have their Battle Elephants and Siege, whereas Persians have their Paladins and Gunpowder. Which civ would you rather take to boomtown?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Chinese vs Mongols. Hope to see you there! :)

New 2v2 strat: TRIM - Trash Rush into Mobility

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 03:37 AM PST

New 2v2 strat: TRIM - Trash Rush into Mobility

    Intro

A bit of context; we were really sick of doing the same thing over and over again, namely archer/scount into crossbow/knight.

We therefore came up with a new strategy, TRIM - Trash Rush into Mobility. As you can see below our ELO skyrocketed since we started doing it and it's still rising.

    https://aoe2.club/playerprofile/338904

In 1v1 trash sucks in feudal because you can't kill any villagers. However in 2v2 this is all different because your ally goes into full scouts.

I'm sharing this strat because I would like to see some more variation in 2v2.

    Requirements

You will need a civ with good early trash like Byzantines (cheaper), Lithuanians (faster), Goths (cheaper) or Koreans (cheaper and free armor) - the trash player.

The other player should have a decent cavalry civ. - the cavalry player.

Also one of the players should be able to make camels.

    Strategy

    1) The trash player militia rushes the player next to him and tries to keep the wall open

    2) The cavalry players sends his scouts there as well with around 21 pop

    3) The trash player builds one archery range and continously produces spears and skirms, which he also sends to the same player to harass him continously. You can research fletching and infantry armor.

    4) On the way to castle, the trash player builds 3 stables.

    5) Once in castle, the trash player goes for camels and the cavalry player for knights (or the other way around). Full mobility.
With this mobility you have a 2 options:
    - You destroy one of their armies 2v1 using your mobility (or both of their armies if possible).
You will often catch archer armies alone because of their lack of mobility.
    - If their armies are combined and you can't win the battle, you both just go for full raiding. Otherwise just crush them.

It sounds like double cavalry can be easily countered, but usually the pikemen are too little too late and you can just run away from them, OR you just anticipate and build a counter. But like I said, by the time they have 10 upgraded pikemen the game is usually already snowballing in our favor.

This works especially well against the usual archer/scout and xbow/knight combo.
Let me know what you think!

What victories are the most fulfilling?

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 07:47 AM PST

Like what is it about a particular game that makes a victory extra fulfilling and memorable?

For me, it's when I spend the game actually on the defensive, but still emerge victorious. Playing on the defensive feels harder than being aggressive, so whenever you've spent the game in YOUR base defending, thinking "he's pouring too many resources into this, he has to be running low," and then actually being able to push back despite him having more map control and a better shot at your villagers, those games feel extra fulfilling to me.

Those are the ones where you factually know you managed your resources better and took advantageous fights. It's one thing to be aggressive and catch your opponent off-guard for a quick GG, it's another thing to win a game where one wrong move means your vils are dead.

Camels a short update to the "Best Camels in Aoe2" Video by Spirit of the law

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 06:10 AM PST

The video is very informative. If you haven't watched give it a try over here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYarsCH4928

For Castle age most of the things stay the same.

Indians are still better than their Malians/saracen counter parts by having +1 pierce armor and worse than the Byzantine and Berbers.

    1. Byzantine
    2. Berbers
    3. Indians
    4. Default Camel.

For Post imp the New rankings look as follow.

    1vs1:

    1. Indians/Saracen/Malians
    2. Berbers
    3. Default Camel.
    4. Byzantine

The 3 Civs that share rank 1 take each other out with the same amount of attacks.

    Equal Resources:

    1. Berbers

    2. Malians(Beat byzantines and go even with Saracen/Indians)

    3. Byzantine (Byzantines with 28 camels beat saracen/indians with 21 camels)

    4. Saracen/Indians(Both go even with Malians but lose against Byzantine)

    5. Default camel.

    The Berbers are still king.

Indian/Saracen/Malians now have camels that are pretty close in strength.

Malians are the best at killing camels.

Saracen are the best at getting shot at.

Indians are the best at raiding as Pallisades arent that big of an issue to them.

Byzantine camels are good enough to beat indians and Saracen in equal resources.

Gate & Walls armor when they're being built.

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 08:48 PM PST

I was doing some testing, and this isn't NEW news, but I was slightly surprised by the results because I thought they removed all armor from all unfinished walls in the last patch.

Stone and Palisade gates have 0/0 armor when being built, as I was kind of expecting.

Palisade/Stone walls however have full pierce armor when being built, so 0/5 or 0/10 when being built.

I had falsely assumed (maybe because the AoE Wiki was wrong on this too) that all unfinished walls had 0 melee and pierce armor.

Any suggestions for natural-looking custom map script packs?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 09:32 PM PST

Any suggestions for natural-looking custom map script packs?

I personally like big diplomacy games among friends where the land looks reasonably like land; it's immersive to me. I don't care much for balance in this regard. Does anyone have suggestions for downloadable map scripts that generate natural-looking worlds, ideally something the AI can handle? And ideally something that generates relatively unpredictably? I'm a bit tired of Coastal and Continental that are really the only map scripts that fill this craving of mine. Megarandom can do something cool as well, but most of the time it's just circles and squares.

For what I'm thinking about, look at AoE1's Coastal map generation - probably completely unbalanced, but looks amazing - and is formed completely different on each iteration.

    Thanks beforehand ^^

What's the best civ for scout rush?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2021 07:06 PM PST

I usually play open maps and scout rush is all I do so I'm looking for what civ to play as. I'm caught between Berbers, Cumans, Magyars, Mongols, Tatars, Turks or Franks.

Come castle, I could switch to Knights or just stick with light cavalry.

Note: I really suck at archer micro, so I'll avoid them as much as possible, so no CA and Light cav combo for me.

Opinion: Team Game Positions and Player Ability

    Posted: 15 Jan 2021 05:59 AM PST

I was curious if there is a general consensus of where you should place your strongest player in a 3v3 TG. Is it better to have them play pocket, as they can support both sides and have a larger impact on the game? Or could you make the argument to have your best player on the flank, with the plan(or hope) to have them take the opposing flank out of the game early leaving for a 2v3 the rest of the way?
