    Hey r/aoe2 it’s T90! Ask me anything!

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 09:15 AM PDT

What's up everyone! T90Official here! I've taken a break from misplacing archery ranges and farms to do an AMA today and answer your questions. I've been making AoE2 content for over 6 years, and playing even longer. From the "dead" community we once had, to the thriving community we have now.... It's been a ride that's for sure! So whether it's a question about the old days of AoE2, my early days of twitch and youtube, or Hidden Cup 4 I'd like to hear it! It's not often I can dedicate time to do this but I always love it when the time comes.

Hidden Cup 4 starts in under 48 hours and it's been incredible to see the amount of hype and anticipation on the subreddit. I won't spam you with any more info regarding that because it's already pinned on the subreddit, but I hope to see you there Thursday-Sunday!

    So... Ask me anything!!

    Is tower rushing acceptable?

Let me first say I suck at this game. I only recently picked up AOE2 again for the first time in ~20 years and boy it's a steep learning curve. I've been slowly trying to get better against the AI and occasionally trying some ranked 1v1.

Today I won my first match. I was Celts, and intended to cause some havoc with militia in the dark age, and then go into siege in the late game. But while I was scouting, I noticed my opponent's gold and woodlines were forward, and there was a tiny choke point between the trees that was perfect for a tower.

I decided to change my plan, brought a villager forward, researched Feudal Age while using my scout to distract him elsewhere on the map, and then dropped the tower, denying the gold and wood. I had a few militia already by that point so I threw them at isolated villagers, too.

I thought this was a good and fair play, based on scouting the enemy and exploiting his poor decisions. But my opponent paused, threw a load of verbal abuse at me, calling me a troll and saying they just wanted to play a 'normal game', and then left.

Did I do something wrong? Is tower rushing not OK? Having a good time and being part of a friendly community is more important to me than winning, so I just want to check I didn't commit some sort of heinous crime, lol. (Pic below.)

    Useful mods for new players

    Posted: 17 Mar 2021 07:00 AM PDT

Hi Everyone, I put this together elsewhere but thoght I would share it here as well. Some options may be controversial, but it has helped my playgroups get comfortable with the game faster.

Small Trees: A must have. Makes it so that trees only take up one block, making walling/seeing holes in the woodbine significantly easier. https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/790/

Advanced Idle Pointer: Make it much more obvious when your workers aren't working. https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/2589/

Age of Mandala: Shows range limit for castle/tower/TC ranges when in sight. https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/20306/

No Snow: A lot of people think it makes it more clear. https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/789/

Better Grid: I just use the basic grid in the game, but a lot of people like this one more https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/812/

Fish Borders: Makes viewing fish more obvious. https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/2840/

Dark Age Town Center: This mod makes your TC more open in dark age. Useful for boar lure, seeing what is going on when getting starting sheep https://www.ageofempires.com/mods/details/20025/

This will be my first tourney I will ever have sat down to watch from start to finish, can someone explain to me how everything works and timing and whatnot? I know all about the memes and the players, but if someone could go into detail on their kinda "playing stereotypes" that would be great!

Just won my first ranked game (my noob experience)

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 01:56 PM PDT

    And I still smiling.

I played some multiplayer games before Steam and got wrecked and overun on them. For the last two weeks I've been playing a lot against AI - I was able to win on Hard sometimes, but never on Extreme. Playing against Humans was INTIMIDATING, but told myself to put aside this and try just one. It turned the game x20 times more intensive and enjoyable.

I picked berbers, I feel so confortable with their fast moving villagers and won against Hard AI doing a M@A rush... even when they are supposed to be a camel/cavalry civ. I had NO PLAN at all; I just wanted to reach feudal as fast as possible, loom + forward villager to build barracks and then we would see what happens.

This two weeks I've been playing all my games on ARABIA, and when I saw it was a different map I got so scared. On the center of the map there was a valley of sand, full of gold. So hard to wall. I took the risk of not walling. I got idle TC a few times but not as bad as I expected, he started above me on score but I came back. My scout reached his base and I absolutely panic when I saw he was walling. A lot of things came to my mind, he was a good player with a specifical build order executing a specifical strat to destroy me on the following minutes. Conqueror rush maybe, or perhaps I wasn't going to last that much and being trushed because of my lack of walls or destroyed my a scout rush or something, I don't know.

I got Feudal 20 seconds before him. I started building a tower near a gold spot out of his wall... I had a few militia, developed M@A and said fuck it, let's go, now or never. Made a gap on his wall, got inside, he started to build two towers and with my then 5-6 M@A i micred my best to avoid his 2nd tower being completed. 4M@A hitting the built tower, the rest hitting the builders. I got my initial scout and another one I made and started just hitting EVERY VILLAGER there was. SO chaotic. He could not build the 2nd tower, I almost destroy the already built one and he surrendered!!! I started clapping my hands, what a relief, I felt like I just lost 20 pounds weight hanging on me.

I thought he would be a better player than me -an absolute noob with less than 15 singleplayer games on last 5 years-. But it turns out that he walled on a weird way, leaving his TC outside, reacted so slow to my M@A leak... at the end he was not as good as I feared. I panicked when he was walled and I was not, if I have think that he was just an AI instead of a human, then I would have ended the game even before! It appears that confidence is soooo important, next game I wont be this "shy". I suggest any of you new players to stop putting goals (IE win against Extreme AI before stepping on rankeds) and just enjoy, it's just a game. Go to a ranked game and if you are really into this game you will feel like being on the stadium of your team while playing a Champions League final. If you manage to win -it doesn't matter-, it will be like a goal on the last minute.

What a fucking blast of game, I even transpirated because of this silly ranked noob match. My father show me this game around 1999 when I was 5 or 6yo and, 22 years after, it still being fucking amazing. I absolute love it. Thanks for your tips and all the info you put here, I learnt a lot and most importantly got the courage to try multiplayer! It's where the game really shines.

Day9 (Sean Plott) is playing AoE2 right now and again tomorrow!

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 02:40 PM PDT

    Watch here: https://www.twitch.tv/day9tv

For those who may not know him, Day9 is a retired OG StarCraft player turned caster/commentator. He's become very highly recognized and respected in the gaming world in general so it's really cool to see him playing our game.

He's super smart and it's been very interesting so far to watch his hyper-structured method of learning the game, I highly recommend everybody check him out. Hopefully if he gets a ton of interest in this he'll play more in the future and maybe even make it a regular thing.

Please do remember to respect his rules. He's been welcoming advice and info from the viewers that goes along with how he wants to learn the game but obviously doesn't want to be spammed with backseat gamers.

King of Valencia without being in Valencia

King of Valencia without being in Valencia

If you ever wondered if you can beat King of Valencia (El Cid 5) without actually being in Valentia, or any other city, I can tell you: It is possible.

After failing the mission several times I decided to try to beat it with only the hero unit. And that way I made it for the first time :D

Funny thing in the second picture: I accidentially captured Valencia, but the game was confused and told me to defend Denia

Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 10: Berbers vs Burgundians

    Posted: 16 Mar 2021 09:34 PM PDT

Our first discussion that features a LotW civ!! And also one that we are unlikely to see in the entirety of HC4 lul.

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Turks vs Vikings, and next up is the Berbers vs Burgundians!

    Berbers: Cavalry and Naval civilization

    • Villagers move +10% faster
    • Stable units cost -15/20% in Castle/Imperial Age
    • Ships move +10% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Genitours are available at the Archery Range starting in Castle Age
    • Unique Unit: Camel Archer (Powerful anti-cav-archer cav archer)
    • Unique Unit: Genitour (Mounted skirmisher)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Kasbah (Castles work +25% faster)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Maghrebi Camels (Camel units very slowly regen hp)

    Burgundians: Cavalry civilization

    • Economic upgrades available one age earlier
    • Stable techs cost -50%; Cavalier available in Castle Age
    • Gunpowder units +25% attack
    • TEAM BONUS: Relics generate food in addition to gold (at a rate of 2f/3g)
    • Unique Unit: Coustillier (Cavalry with a special very high damage charge attack on a long cooldown)
    • Unique Unit: Flemish Militia (Combination of Champion and Halberdier; only available through Flemish Revolution UT)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Burgundian Vineyards (Converts all food into half as much gold; Farms generate a small trickle of gold (~45 farmers = 1 relic))
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Flemish Revolution (All Villagers transform into Flemish Militia; Flemish Militia can be trained from Town Centers)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Alrighty, new civ time! For 1v1 Arabia, Berbers are usually considered above-average, whereas Burgundians thus far are considered... meh. However, Burgundians do have something Berbers do not - a potentially powerful economy. Can Burgundians possibly leverage this to get an advantage vs Berbers, or will they simply be run over by cheap knights, camels, and camel archers?
    • For closed maps, things perhaps look a bit different. The Burgundian eco can be very consistently powerful here, and they are much more likely to be able to hit their critical timings. Also, their gunpowder can more often be used. Berbers, meanwhile, do struggle a bit more with their lack of good eco bonus, although they can build up a very scary army of Camel Archers. Which civ do you favor on your BFs, Arenas, and Hideouts?
    • In team games, obviously both civs prefer to be pocket. Berbers are a strong choice for midgame, as they can flood a massive amount of knights and camels. However, their lack of Paladin in the lategame can be somewhat problematic. Burgundians, meanwhile, have an excellent economy and have their own midgame timings with early cavalier and paladins, and like Berbers they miss out a bit in late game due to not having Bloodlines. Which civ do you favor as pocket here?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Huns vs Malay. Hope to see you there! :)
