[AMA] CaptureAge added Time Rewind after 20 years of AoE2: Ask Us Anything

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 12:02 PM PDT

Hey Reddit! The CaptureAge Team here. Recently we've received tons of questions about our analysis and casting tool CA:DE, our future plans and ourselves. What better place to answer them publicly than here on /r/aoe2. So for the next couple of hours we'll be here to answer any questions you have about CaptureAge in the comments below to the best of our ability.

If you've watched Hidden Cup 4, there's no doubt you have seen our latest feature: Time Control. This feature allows you to rewind the game to watch it in reverse, slow-motion or insane speed. Of course you can also just click any point on the timeline to jump to that point. And in case you don't want to remember the exact timestamp when interesting events happened, you can easily add bookmarks as nice reminders.

These Time Controls, among other features, are available via a subscription to CaptureAge Pro on www.captureage.com/cade.

    Our usernames are: /u/abductedPlatypus, /u/bowSwung, /u/DicoTheRedstoner, /u/emiel-ca, /u/n0_brain and /u/SirLaurenceNZ.

We'll be around from now until at least 2 4 hours from now (21:00 23:00 UTC). We'll follow this up with a ~2 hour stream on Sunday March 28th at 19:00 UTC after Two Pools 2 (~ 21:00 UTC) on our Twitch channel. Quick reminder that daylight savings start in Europe on that day, so you might want to double check your timezone :)

If you're interested we are also active on /r/captureage, Discord and Twitter.

    Cheers, Dico

EDIT: Thanks for all the great questions. We will check back tomorrow to answer in case more get posted :)

    Aztecs make cav?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 11:20 PM PDT

I watched t90's new video about mbl making monks and petards and I learned that Aztecs can actually make cav (xoaitc warrior or something) if a monk converts a stable. Is this new in DE or did it exist all the way back to Conquerors?

Also, does Mayans and Incas have a similar thing?

Civilization Unit Classification (request for help)

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 05:19 AM PDT

    Hey,

I am attempting to classify civilizations based upon which unit lines they draw their strength from. I am doing this as part of a wider analysis into civilization balance to see if we can identify (from a data perspective) apart which unit types are potentially overpowered / underpowered.

In order for this to work though the classification needs to be as representative as possible. My current attempt at doing this can be found here:

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1SFPZlTfP38foj9oy_gYviUK2k9_neIjwle6PKi1YCoA/edit?usp=sharing

The general goal is to put an "x" in a particular civilization / unit box if that civilizations performance or ability can be associated to that unit, or alternatively if that civilization has the ability to effectively use the unit (even if in practice they don't tend to use it). By its nature this is very subjective and will be impossible to perfectly put together.

Also in some cases (i.e. Skirmisher) too many civilizations have access to the FU unit so instead I rely on bonuses to make the classification. Likewise in general if a civilization has a non-FU version of the unit but instead has some other meaningful bonus I will also include it, for example Persian crossbows (no gold bonus) and Burgundian Paladins (quicker and cheaper upgrades).

Any adjustments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Ranked Queue leavers

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 06:47 PM PDT

Im mad that I have to wait 4-6 minutes for a teamgame ranked queue to find a match and after map is showed some random guy leaves. Making it another 4-6 minutes each and everytime.

Do you feel there should be a penalization for leavers? Elo loss, Timer to queue, etc?.

    AOE 2 superb community

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 12:32 PM PDT

Just an appreciation post for the AOE community.

Not sure if it's because the game is older so the general age of the players is older and more mature. everyone I've come across on my stream/Reddit have been extremely helpful despite me being new and horrible at the game 😂

Every game is finished with a GG etc, you just love to see it

Tech idea (inspired by Flemish militia)

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 08:08 AM PDT

Castle age tech or Civ bonus which comes into play in Castle age.

Adds a new unit (similar to Flemish militia but much weaker) trainable at Town centers and Castles
    Cost: 1 garrisoned villager, +maybe 5 gold?
Training time: instant (I mean they just pick up weapons and armor...)

Envisioned usage: You are being raided and you are gonna lose 20 villagers. You garrison all 20 in your town center, train 10 of these.=You "lost" 10 villagers only and raid is over.

Help with drivers? I've done everything I can think of.

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 07:37 AM PDT

I was having trouble launching aoe2, so I went ahead and un/re-installed it. Now when I launch I get a Steam client request popup and then an error with C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MSVP140.dll0. I traced that to an issue with Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable , and I installed the latest one to no avail.

Now when I start the game, it pops up with a "performing first-time setup" box briefly, then the same C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\MSVP140.dll0 error.

I got up early this beautiful morning to play my favorite game. Help?

Edit: I've loaded multiple other games normally.

S-Tier tournament maps in the map pool?

    Posted: 26 Mar 2021 10:26 AM PDT

Like the title, do you think it would be cool that let's say 2 weeks before a S-Tier tournament, e.g. Hidden Cup, the suitable map pool is getting replaced with the tournament map pool

    From my perspective:

    Pros:

    • cool to play the same maps like in the tournament for casuals

    • pro players could practice the maps in normal 1v1

    • when watching the tournaments the strategically decisions could be better comprehended

    • probably more hype for the tournaments

    • pro players without big teams could practice easier

    Cons:

    • what's with empire wars and other not rm/DM tournaments?

    • pros probably would prefer to hide the strategies

    • either bloated map pool, or sometimes no Arabia/arena

    • tournament has less new things

Pikeman line vs meso-american civs ?

    Posted: 27 Mar 2021 03:20 AM PDT

Hey guys. Today I was playing with lithuanians and my opponent was aztecs on arabia. Lithuanians knights/leitis is a great strat if you'd like to go cav as u know.

I had a few questions popped in my mind during game. 1-Lithuanians have great spear line with their extra speed but against meso-american civs is there any reason I should make pike line? I guess light cav+Eskirms would do just fine ?

2-Aztecs might be a great civ for early aggression but when it comes to mid /late game I guess they lack a lot. Sometimes I play with aztecs too and the lack of cavalry trash unit is not tolerable to me. If I have pikes and my opponent has hussars, they can run forever, I do not have a real counter unit against them.

3-I think the lack of halbs is too much for them. Even with 14+6(only 2 relics) on my knight line/leitis, pikes cant do any harm. Maybe they should make garland wars affect infantry except pike line and give them halbs. Or they can increase the attack speed of pikes of aztecs.

What do you guys think ?
