Just a new fan of the community

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 05:05 AM PST

me watching documentaries on old civilizations and wars.

Remembering a game i used to play in college 10 years ago having to do with war strategies.

Finding and setup and starting to play again.

Looking up the internet for tips to get better.

Getting many links to this subreddit.

Watching videos by someone named spirit of the law.

Reading in the comments a lot about someone named The Viper and automatically becoming a fan (without actually watching him play)

Finding a lot of new things about the game in this community (GG, 11, daut castle, drush flush crush, fc, boom, build order)

Watching a video of a man playing joan of arc campaign and playing too fast for me to comprehend. Discovering it later to be The Viper.

Reading about civilizations, units, counters, techs.

Many leads to something called hidden cup 4.

Watching hidden cup 3 finals, getting completely hooked. Commentators suggesting the viper was defeated earlier before the finals. Discovering he actually won it in the reveal, getting a huge fan moment.

Now daily reading information on this sub, and simultaneously trying to improve my game.

Thinking all days about strategies and analysing my gameplays.

All in all i was completely unaware of all this awesomeness just 3 weeks ago. Thanks for all that.

    HD vs DE for buying?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:48 AM PST

Hi guys, I want to buy the game especially to get the chance to play online, currently playing on an old setup i had saved on an harddisk 10 years ago. Confused between buying HD vs DE.

Main issue with DE is that its 30 gb and resource heavy. Is HD good enough for casual gameplay with occasional online gameplay?

Played a 4.5 hour Amazon Tunnel game. Got my villagers entirely wiped out once through onager-cutting sneak and my trade wiped out twice, my allies got their entire home bases wiped out buildings and all, and we still won.

Played a 4.5 hour Amazon Tunnel game. Got my villagers entirely wiped out once through onager-cutting sneak and my trade wiped out twice, my allies got their entire home bases wiped out buildings and all, and we still won.

First of all, if you don't play Amazon Tunnel on Ludicrous you're doing it wrong, Giant clogs up the base and kind of forces you to build in the middle whereas Ludicrous will let you build up comfortably and results in epic large scale wars in which you have to call plays similar to American football and play a higher (albeit more stressful) level of AOE2. Anyway, onto the battle...

I'm orange, and I had to carry red and blue. The other team's onager-cutter sneaker was pink, and the 3 people on the enemy team were better than my 2 allies but less skilled than me.

I'm surprised I won this game really, thought I was gonna lose. I think I won because I made 8 TCs while booming and had so much stockpiled resources and TCs that when my vills got wiped out I could rebuild really fast. A frustrating part was that my allies refused to do anything at first when pink kept on getting in our base from his onager-cut path, later on blue was a bit helpful but overall what helped was that I sold gold for stone and build castles the entire way through our trade route. That mod for seeing castle range is really OP, it helped me make my route perfectly and optimally protected.

The war in the middle was epic. We got all the way to the tip of their base (conquering the middle and their side's hallway to the middle), then pink wiped out my ally's bases and all my vills and trade and they conquered both their side's hallway and the middle, leaving us to fight for our side's hallway and eventually winning. As we were gaining back the middle, pink got in again and wiped out my trade for a second time. I don't know why he didn't go for vills again, I'm guessing it's because he thought they were still dead and didn't expect me to rebuild that fast. Malian Town Centers helped out minimally but IMO castles are still necessary.

The game was 400 pop, so my largest army of 372 is kind of interesting. After all my vills got wiped out, it was actually hard to repopulate because my military buildings filled up the pop space really fast. Think about how crazy that is... 372/400 of my population was pure military at one point. I was impressed with my K/D, I think it was because of my Gbetos. Those things are inferior to Throwing Axemen if you don't micro, but if you do they can be comparable. The Goths enemy got slaughtered due to my ranged melee, but Mangudai raids were really hard to deal with. Skirms too slow, Light Cav get shredded, I think I dealt with them in the end with a combo of Caveliers and Light Cavs, with some occasional Camels thrown in.

I had a villager high of 270, which gave me the best eco. Pink kind of played dirty by slinging to the Goths, from what I've seen in pro games slinging is really OP. Luckily my Gbeto wiped them out well. My trade profit being abnormally high was because I had 90 carts, and refilled back to a similar amount with the gold I had stockpiled.

Let me know what you think!

I give you WARWOLF. Since I won't know who my favourite player is in HC4 (Hera) I can at least cheer for the best Hero Name. Which hero are you cheering for?

Some love for the Hauteville campaign

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 08:12 AM PST

Many people have been criticising the Hauteville campaign, not unfairly so. There are some major flaws like the Emirs wandering around in the 2nd mission or the player basically unable to lose in the 4th. But I still wanted to make a small appreciation post. Although it doesn't really deserve the "3-sword-difficulty" in my opinion, I thoroughly enjoyed playing through it. There are very innovative and fun concepts: conquering towns cities, a range of diplomacy options in different missions (become a liege, hand over your muslim ally, rebellions, consequences of attacking certain factions), raiding to literally weaken the enemy army, different objectives to choose from etc.

Despite not working everything that properly, I think the Hauteville campaign was one of the most fun and memorable. Even more so when comparing to some of the absolute grind scenarios in the Forgotten or Raja campaigns.

I need a copy of the EULA for DE for research project

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 03:07 AM PST

EDIT - I got it, thanks so much u/Sailleana

(sorry admins if this doesn't constitute AOE chatter)

Hey guys, I'm doing a research project for my YouTube channel about Age of Empires II, art assets, copyright and IP theft but I don't currently have DE, only the HD edition.

Could I ask for someone to pop into their Steam Files and drop their EULA for DE to me? I can't seem to find it anywhere online. I'd take a screenshot too. Thanks!

    Thumbring clarification

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 04:50 AM PST

I've read somewhere on this sub that thumbring does NOT affect hit and run micro, but i swear it feels so much smoother microing archers with thumbring. Is it psychological? Can someone clarify how thumbring works? Thanks

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 07:34 AM PST

    Hello there,

I remember that like 10-15ys ago I used to played AoE (dunno if was I, II or III).

One of my favorite maps was the one where you started playing with only 2 priests and u had to convers a village near you.

Can you help me to identify which AoE was and the name of the campaign/match?

    Thanks a lot!

Best screen cap software for Age videos?

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 02:40 AM PST

I'd like to make some fairly long videos where I either speak into a mic whilst playing or do so over the top of watching a replay with the aim of making a YouTube video. As I use a 4k screen the raw video file would be huge, do some programs use compression on the fly?

I'd really appreciate some pointers on what is generally used, please.

    Aoe2 HD vs Aoe2 DE

    Posted: 08 Mar 2021 06:26 AM PST

So ive played this for years and withing the past couple years finally got the steam HD version of Aoe2. But there's also the DE version. My question is this: I know there are more civilizations on the DE but for the ones that are the same, are all the stats the same in DE and HD? Like when you look up the unique units of the Mongols or the Khmer will they be the same in both versions?

A possible and reasonable small buff for organ guns

    Posted: 07 Mar 2021 07:42 PM PST

Just like the recent Arambai change did, the secondary projectiles of organ gun should always do 2 damage even if it hit the wrong unit.
