Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 11 Week 19: Burmese vs Tatars

    Posted: 18 May 2021 09:44 PM PDT

This is... not a match up we see often lol

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Britons vs Cumans, and next up is the Burmese vs Tatars!

    Burmese: Monk and Elephant civilization

    • Lumber Camp upgrades free
    • Infantry +1/2/3 attack in Feudal/Castle/Imperial Age
    • Monastery techs cost -50%
    • TEAM BONUS: Relic spawn locations visible on map
    • Unique Unit: Arambai (Dart-throwing cavalry with a high damage, but inaccurate attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Howdah (Battle Elephants +1/+1 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Manipur Cavalry (Cavalry and Arambai +6 attack vs buildings)

    Tatars: Cavalry Archer civilization

    • Herdable animals (sheep) last +50% longer
    • Town Centers spawn 2 sheep when constructed, starting in Castle Age
    • Units deal an additional +25% bonus damage when fighting from higher elevation
    • Thumb Ring, Parthian Tactics free
    • TEAM BONUS: Cav Archers +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Keshik (Medium cavalry that generates a small gold trickle when fighting units)
    • Unique Unit: Flaming Camel (Petard-unit that is only good vs cavalry and elephants)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Silk Armor (Scout-line, Steppe Lancers, and Cav Archers gain +1/+1 armor)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Timurid Siegecraft (Trebuchets +2 range; enables Flaming Camels)

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, so for 1v1 Arabia and other open maps, Tatars would likely be considered more versatile than Burmese. Both have decent eco bonuses, but Tatars having excellent cavalry and cav archers just make them seem much more useful than the Monk/Elephant/Infantry/UU-reliant Burmese. In this match up, how can Burmese keep up with the mobile Tatar army?
    • On closed maps like Arena, Hideout, and BF, things would appear to be completely flipped, with Burmese appearing much more versatile than Tatars. You can more safely get to Arambai (although the old double castle arambai strat is thankfully more or less gone), but can also make much better use of your infantry, monks, and cavalry. Tatars, meanwhile have much less space to maneuver, and in the case of Arena, 0 hills to utilize their bonus. They do, however, possess a cost-efficient late game army and interestingly have access to BBTs. What do you guys think?
    • In team games, things get a bit awkward for both of these civs. Both are pretty solid pockets, what with good economies and above-average Stables, but neither really can compare to the best pocket civs. As flank, Burmese can go for stuff like m@a + towers into Arambai, but that sort of thing is much risky. Unfortunately for them, their archers are not at all good. Tatars, meanwhile, do lack Arbalest, but instead possess powerful CA. The trick is being able to get them up and going. Thoughts?

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will start round 12 with the Japanese vs Sicilians. Hope to see you there! :)

    Playing against goths,

STOP NOW! Stop labeling your lobby games "NOOBS ONLY" when you are not NEW to the game

    Posted: 19 May 2021 12:03 AM PDT

I think this is my biggest frustration with the game.

I like playing unranked team games. Until the devs implement filters, there is no way to not see all the noob games. I rather not play these so called NOOB ONLY games. But in my experience, if you try to create your own lobby, if it's not "NOOB ONLY" you end up waiting forever til it fills up.

I'm a 1200 elo player, just above average, been playing for a while, on & off. When I started DE (I was on voobly before) I was surprised by the number of "NOOB ONLY" games in the lobby. I would be patient and wait for a game or create my own. It could take up to 20 minutes before I could play. Then one day, I couldn't find any non-noob games, and being impatient that day, ended clicking in a noob game when I saw the host was the same rating as me, even tho I was pretty surprised he would label his lobby that way, considering his rating.

Long story short I lost the game. After this, I tried a couple more noob games. Honestly, I don't know my exact win rate, but I'd say it's probably around 50%. Occasionally, I'll get kicked from the game because my rating is too high. But the other times, I play against plenty of smurfs and above-average players.

Anyways, it's pretty stupid that I have to play "noob games" to actually find opponents my own level. For some reason when I join "average player" lobbies, the overall level is consitently lower than these so-called "noob games".

If I was actually a noob I'd be so discouraged!

There you go, that's my rant. I'm part of the problem now, I know, but I'd like things to change.

Why you should always go random on the 1v1 ladder if you want to improve.

    Posted: 19 May 2021 04:23 AM PDT

In my transition from 11xx-12xx to 13xx-14xx ELO (playing mostly random regardless of what my opponent does), looking the profiles of my opponents I've noticed that an increasing amount of players goes random (or at least leave the option open).

I want to share some points why, in my experience, going random is beneficial for your progress as a player, and you should definitely consider doing that if you want to become a better player.

1 - It's not that hard and time consuming to learn how to play random civs.

Because 33 out of 37 civs can be played starting with two build orders: 21-22 pop m@a and 20 pop scouts, I use Moonfaller build orders as reference (check the VODs where he does coaching sessions if you want more details about those builds, but they're pretty standard). Focusing on learning these 2 standard builds that can be performed without eco bonus, you can manage to simplify your approach to random civs play, and with time you'll learn how to adapt these builds to the bonus of the civ you'll get. Then, you can add other BOs to your arsenal (most notably drush openings). The 4 remaining civs are goths and mayans that can be played with slight adaptation to m@a build, Malay that are tricky and generally require archers or drush and Chinese that require a specific build order.

So in conclusion, 35 out of 37 civs can be played in a very similar fashion until castle age, only 2 out of 37 are really tricky. This means that your dark age - feudal play is gonna be at least somewhat fine in 95% of your games if you learn those 2 build orders.

Castle and imperial seems to be the scariest part, with tech tree variety exploding and every civ having different techs and options. Instead in my experience this is the least scary part: the number of key techs you need to remember if the civ have access to are really few (I'd say bloodlines, last cavalry armor, hussars, camels, arbalest, TR, bracer, halberdiers, siege rams). So, even if some civs can prove to be tricky to play, you don't need to remember every tech tree to play them. Of course with time you'll learn civs more in depth, and you'll get better to face every situation more efficiently, but the initial approach isn't hard as you think.

2 - Game is decently balanced at the moment.

Some civs are better than others, but the gap is closer than what most people thinks. If you check the winrates, every civ has between 53,5-45% winrate, so there are no civs that guarantee a win nor that guarantee a loss, you generally have a shot with every civ you get. And this become more and more true the lower the ELO is, I'd say that below 1200 ELO the civ picked is borderline irrelevant.

Of course you can occasionally get really unlucky and get a terrible match-up (eg turks vs britons), but that won't happen often: expecially on Arabia, every civ have at least one bonus you can try to leverage to get an advantage over your opponent.

3 - It allows to learn the basic principles of the game, not one civ.

The lesson I've learnt is that the higher ELO you get picking one civ, the lower you're gonna fall when you get tired and change civ. This is expecially true when you pick easy civs like lithuanians or franks, with some sort of simplification in the gameplay or very specific builds, or worse doing just specific stuffs on specific maps such as some clown castle drop build on arena. What happens when you intensively pick is that you focus on learn those gameplay and builds, and your progress with these civ/builds allows to boost your ELO hiding flaws in micro/macro/decision making aspects of the game.

4 - Going random improves your adaptation, flexibility and quick decision making skills.

Because you get in the game with no idea of what it's expecting you, it's quite likely you're gonna play a match-up you've never played before, so you need to formulate a plan quickly and be ready to your opponent reacted in a potentially unexpected way. This is definitely the hardest part, but that is also the reason why going random is beneficial long term to your gains. It can happen to drop some ELO and get stomped few times while learning these skills, but in the long term it's definitely worthy,

5 - It's funnier and helps the longevity of the game

I read a lot of posts about "boring meta" and "knights and xbows domination that makes every game play out the same". Well, try to play random, slowly learn how to leverage every civ bonus and strength, try to explore the over 600 unique civ match-ups the game have to offer, and the game will look way less one-dimensional and boring.

6 - Getting to any result going random is the most solid and consistent way to get there.

The first I got to 14xx, I got there playing only lithuanians 17-18 pop scouts builds, thanks to early vills snipes and snowballing that advantage later in the game. Once I got there, I couldn't progress any further due to players getting better at quickwalling at that level. I got tired, I changed civs and saw that 14xx was just an illusion. I dropped down to 12xx and even 11xx in some bad days, I realized that despite I was getting a better ELO I wasn't becoming a better player and started going random from there.

If you go random instead, your ELO gain is always gonna reflect your skill gains, that you can apply regardless of the civ and the map, so it's a more solid way to spend your time trying to get better.

7 - Pro players go random

    Be like pros 11.

Jokes apart. If your long term goal is to get into some tournament, you won't be able to play just your favourite civ there. Learning a lot of civ and learn adaptation is the way to go

Is it just me or do you think there should be an AI level between Moderate and Hard?

    Posted: 18 May 2021 10:34 PM PDT

For me, the Moderate AI is too easy and Hard AI is a tad too hard (if you don't cheese the AI).

I also wish you could choose the AI difficulty individually per AI player like in StarCraft. This would help a lot when you're playing with a group of friends of varying skill levels.

Can we add a vote to forfeit for team games?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 04:18 AM PDT

Teammates resigning winnable games are extremely frequent in 3v3 and 4v4 which makes playing it without a full stack virtually impossible.

Could we add a vote to resign so players don't just give up after one bad thing happens to them? This along with implementing leaver penalties for people who just leave anyways would make 3 and 4s team games much more playable

Italians should be renamed Genoese and speak Genoese. What do you think?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 06:11 AM PDT

Since the Sicilians were integrated into the game, I find that the people of the Italians no longer quite fit into the game. In my opinion, the Italians didn't fit into the game from the beginning, because there was no national consciousness in Italy in the Middle Ages. I think the Italians should be renamed Genoese and speak Genoese and not medieval Latin.

    What do you think?

Was there anything that Aoe 1: Definitive Edition (or the older ones) did better than Aoe 2 DE?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 12:27 AM PDT

I liked the ancient feel of the first game, the more esoteric civilizations, Mirror tower (Archimedes) and the chariots to be better than Aoe 2.

But overall Aoe 2 is far more popular.

So I was thinking if there were few things that Aoe 1 did better in the eyes of everyone?

    Posted: 19 May 2021 01:23 AM PDT

Too bad nomad has been rotated out but basically had an ally playing Persians

Somehow enemy built his tc next to my persian ally. When I checked the replay it was all in fog but my ally had started building his tc almost 10 seconds before

Then enemy ragequitted after 20 secs of tv fire when both TCs were up lol

Correct pronounciation of some terms I found

    Posted: 19 May 2021 07:51 AM PDT

Janissary - yeni seri (meaning new soldier) reference

Sultans - sul as in wool + tan as if it is taan reference

Shatagni - the T is pronounced like this and the agni is pronounced like ugly with L replaced by N - full pronounciation

As a side not, the term "Manipur" Cavalry is wrong. It should be "Manipuri" Cavalry. Manipur is a noun like "Britain" and Manipuri is an adjective like "British".

    Getting G U D

    Posted: 19 May 2021 02:42 AM PDT

    Hey guys.

I've spent over 2k hours playing HD (mostly GOT Overhaul which I also suck at completely) and have gotten into DE a lot recently. I have played every art of war mission but I suck at that too, since I couldn't finish them all with gold medals. I have trouble getting a strong economy and in general fighting, and it seems like all my armies are retarded since they move in a really weird manner compared to the seemingly smooth movement of other guys.

Any advice? I feel kind of ashamed for having played so much of the AOE franchise and still being trash at it. I cant even beat moderate AI and get thrashed by extreme due to knight rushes, despite having spent so much time playing and talking about aoe2.

If anyone would be willing to practice with me to help me get better or give some advice, I'm open.

Give people the same map again, if matchmaking fails.

    Posted: 19 May 2021 07:58 AM PDT

So if you are queueing and matchmaking fails (for what ever reasons 11), after you were already assigned a game/map etc. give players only this map, until they have won or lost a game on this map.

So if you were happy to see you favourite map, and someone drops you dont have to feel sad! Because you will get it next time again. AND AGAIN AND AGAIN TILL ETERNITY HAHAHA

(other positive side effects may be included)
