Civilization Match-up Discussion Round 12 Week 6: Franks vs Koreans

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 09:05 PM PDT

Well... uhh... this should be interesting...

Hello and welcome back for another Age of Empires 2 civilization match up discussion! This is a series where we discuss the various advantages, disadvantages, and quirks found within the numerous match ups of the game. The goal is to collectively gain a deeper understanding of how two civilizations interact with each other in a variety of different settings. Feel free to ask questions, pose strategies, or provide insight on how the two civilizations in question interact with each other on any map type and game mode. This is not limited to 1v1 either. Feel free to discuss how the civilizations compare in team games as well! So long as you are talking about how the two civilizations interact, anything is fair game! Last week we discussed the Bulgarians vs Incas, and next up is the Franks vs Koreans!

    Franks: Cavalry civilization

    • Castles cost -25%
    • Cavalry gain +20% hp starting in Feudal Age
    • Farm upgrades free (requires Mill)
    • Foragers work +15% faster
    • TEAM BONUS: Knights +2 LoS
    • Unique Unit: Throwing Axeman (Heavy infantry with short-ranged attack)
    • Castle Age Unique Tech: Bearded Axe (Throwing Axemen +1 range)
    • Imperial Age Unique Tech: Chivalry (Stables work +40% faster)

    Koreans: Defensive and Naval civilization

    • Villagers +3 LoS
    • Stone Miners work +20% faster
    • Tower upgrades free (BBT requires Chemistry)
    • Archer armor upgrades free
    • Military units (except siege weapons) cost -20% wood
    • TEAM BONUS: Mangonel minimum range reduced to 1 tile

Below are some match up-specific talking points to get you all started. These are just to give people ideas, you do not need to address them specifically if you do not want to!

    • Okay, so we've got the most popular civ vs one of the least... Well, for 1v1 Arabia, Franks are certainly seen as the more powerful pick in general. That said, Koreans do possess a lot of powerful military options - especially since Franks do not deal with War Wagons particularly well. Can the Korean player survive to get to their amazing late game, or will they simply be run over by Frank cavalry?
    • On closed maps, these civs get a lot more even. Franks still have a strong eco and a fairly wide array of powerful military options with cavalry, infantry, and gunpowder. That said, Koreans are going to be very happy to be in a situation where they can slowly creep across the map without having to worry about mobility. Can the Frank player match this slow push of Towers, ranged units, siege, and halbs?
    • Umm so normally I also talk about team games and/or water maps... Franks top-tier pocket, Koreans strong flank, and obviously prefer Koreans on anything that resembles a water map... Idk, anyone else have something more interesting to say on the matter? 11

Thanks as always for participating! Next week we will continue our discussions with the Aztecs vs Goths. Hope to see you there! :)

FEDEX made it to the Chess World Cup

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:53 PM PDT

TIL that Fedex, the AoE2 player from Argentina, has qualified for the Chess World Cup. AOE2-wise Fedex was recently a member of the Argentina B team in the AOE2 World Cup. Chess-wise, he's been a chess grandmaster since he was 17. He qualified to the Chess World Cup in Russia and will be playing in July.

Never has the AoE2 intro made more sense to me.

    Hidden score tournament?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 07:25 AM PDT

Pros and all levels of ranked players pay attention to score to glean hints of information about how their game is going. Higher level ELO players are using score to determine things like:

    1) Drush is happening
    2) Opponent is trying to lame
    3) Opponent is scouting
    4) Opponent is deer luring
    5) Opponent has clicked up to next age
    6) Last engagement was good for me/opponent
    7) Snowballing

    etc.

How would a game setting that disables visible score affect gameplay at lower ELO levels and pro levels?

Has there ever been a pro-level tournament with score turned off?

How do I get my hotkeys to a new account on the same PC?

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 06:47 AM PDT

Hi, I just made a new account and I want to import the hotkeys. I tried googling but most of it is to move it from 1 pc to the other, but linking it to the same account. However, I want them on the same PC, just another steam account.

I'm apparently not tech savvy enough to figure this one out :(. Any help?

Why does score drop when someone click up?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 05:41 PM PDT

I was watching Hera's latest video of hoang eating tc and when hoang clicked up his score dropped like 300 points. I get that the score might increase slowly when someone is advancing but why would the score drop so much?

Unpopular opinion: tatars are better on "flat" maps than on maps that feature 1 big elevation change

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 03:33 AM PDT

obviously when I say "flat", I mean arabia flat, not arena flat, meaning some elevation changes but nothing too big and nothing predictable

I'm watching the last games of wololo IV, and I was surprized to see Hera pick tatars on "arabia" rather than on meadow or acclivity

Then I recalled, I think it was Jordan's game against the Viper on mountain range, he played tatars against ethiopians. Except Viper took the middle early on and never let it go, thus completely negating the bonus for which Jordan chose tatars. And it wasn't the first time I saw Tatars countered like that.

Whether it's your starting TC that's uphill (acropolis), downhill (acclivity), or an objective in the center of the map that's uphill or downhill, I just feel it's way too predictable.

On acropolis for instance, just avoid pushing his base until you've taken a significative advantage and no hill bonus will interfere with your plans

So for me, it's way better to use them on arabia because you opponent cannot anticipate the hills positions

    Basic micro and civ tips

    Posted: 30 Jun 2021 07:44 AM PDT

So I'm new to the Aoe 2 online scene but I've played a fair bit of single player but I've struggled with my villagers and military units being idle all the time and this often means that both my economy and battle tactics suffer due to idle units and not paying attention to things such as Onager shots . Being a Company of Heroes 2 player keeping tabs on idle units was quite easy thanks to idle markers being shown on top of your units and voice cues which meant that staying on top of everything was much easier . Also being a faster paced game where resources are only gained by map control and not by farming meant that you were encouraged to always be on the offensive .

I've struggled with the slower pace of Aoe 2 where a good chunk of the early game is just base building and exploring unless one is running dark age militia strats. Any tips on how to improve my micro and which civs might be a good pick for a player like me ? Any suggestions are always appreciated .

    Favorite Campaign?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 04:17 PM PDT

I've been playing through all the campaigns on hard (just finished all of Europe and moving on to Asia) and I was wondering what people's favorite campaigns are, mine so far is Vlad Dracula because it feels and plays pretty uniquely. The hunnic campaign and gothic campaign were also pretty fun. Of the newest ones the Hautevilles looks to be the best and most challenging (haven't played it yet tho). Anyway I just wanted to know what campaigns people liked the most.

How to counter burgundian cavalier with magyars?

    Posted: 29 Jun 2021 08:05 PM PDT

    Hi,

I use Hera's scout rush build order and have had quite some success at 900 elo.

However I just had a game where I had the eco lead, was walled in completely and managed to kill one villager with scouts in feudal age, yet was late to castle age by a minute. My palisade gate was torn down by burgundian cavaliers and even tho I managed to produce magyar knights when they were in the base my eco broke and I couldn't get them out of the base.

How would you counter this? I have never experienced being raided by the burgundian instant cavalier bonus. My TC idle time was most of the time lower/at the same level as my opponent, but a few minutes before CA doubled to 3 minutes. I don't think that was the deciding factor, I felt I did most things pretty good.
